OCCUPATION: Junior Undersecretary; Improper Use of Magic Office CLASS: Working Class LOYALTY/ALLIANCE: Ministry STATUS: Free Citizen APPEARANCE APPEARANCE: Ernie has never been a ‘handsome’ boy. He has a sort of chubby charm, but that’s as far as it goes. His face is far too round to be properly handsome, his blondish brownish hair too curly, his body too flabby. But when he smiles it seems genuine, and his brown eyes can be very kind when they’re not stern or condescending. He always dresses very well, in tailored robes and, when he must, three piece suits. He keeps his ties tight, his shoes polished, and his buttons just so. He tries to keep his hair neat, though no amount of Sleek ease can keep his unruly curls down for long. He takes a great deal of pride in his appearance, making up for a lack of natural charisma with an air of pompous importance. His pocket watch says he’s too busy for you, his lapel pin says he’s too important. He speaks in a brusque, slightly affected tone, relying on words like ‘old sport’ and ‘chuffed’ to keep up the appearance of a good old boy. He is pleasant to almost everyone, but in an aloof manner that makes most people dislike him at once. His bustling officiousness makes him seen both indispensible and unbearable. PERSONALITY WAND: 7”, Dragon Heartstring, Willow, quite spriny BOGGART: Minister Diggory, shaking his head in disappointment and disapproval. PATRONUS: Boar LIKES: Order, well trimmed hedges, sugar quills, light jazz, clean socks, coffee, white wash, lemons, paperwork, treacle, power walking, dotting I’s, cats. DISLIKES: clutter, oranges, whelks, snow, ice tea, alarms, waking up early, dandelions, boats, allergies, tomatoes, rude people. STRENGTHS: Ordered: Ernie was born for middle management. He can keep a whole years calendar in his head, knows where every bit of paper is, and can always find his keys. Honest: He always tells the truth, even when it might get him into trouble. The idea of lying is completely foreign to him. Loyal: Ernie will do anything for his friends. And when he dedicates himself to something he will believe anything they say without fail. WEAKNESSES: Personality-wise and misc. (such as cooking). Pompous: Ernie loves the grand and officious side of life. Hasty: He also tends to make hasty, snap decisions without really thinking them through. Unimaginative: Ernie has a hard time coming up with truly original ideas. He prefers to follow the pack. DETAILED PERSONALITY: Ernie is a staunch character. He is a bit pompous, and rather pretentious, but his honest and loyal heart makes him a true Hufflepuff. He is never afraid to speak his mind, but is also quite willing to admit when he’s wrong. He makes decisions a little too quickly, and will follow someone he admires almost blindly. He’s not a particularly smart boy, but he’s a hard worker and overcomes what he lacks in intelligence with sheer determination. He has never quit anything in his life, and has excelled in his chosen career. It also helps that he is a bit of a brown noser, and knows quite well how to butter up the right people. He has a pleasant demeanor, but an unfortunate habit of jumping to conclusions before he has all the information. He is also a little too concerned with appearances, and will make judgments that may seem unfair. But most of the time he’s an easy going, if a little stuffy, young man who works hard and is incredibly loyal. HISTORY Childhood Ernie was a very obedient child. His nanny thought he was the best behaved little boy she had ever met, and his mother and father loved showing their friends and guests just how well Ernie listened. He was constantly praised for his obedience, and so Ernie learned very young that doing what you’re told yielded the best results. He had never been a very curious child, and his few attempts at exploration or experimentation were so soundly punished that he stopped doing anything that wasn’t introduced to him by an authority figure. He had several tutors, and they all agreed he was an affable, likable, if slightly dull child. He wasn’t stupid by any means, but he lacked imagination and needed everything to be very carefully explained. But he worked hard, and would doggedly pursue any task given him. He had good study habits, and genuinely liked reading. At least, he liked reading his approved school books. Fiction never held interest for him. Hogwarts His Hogwarts letter came as no surprise to Ernie. His parents had been preparing him for years. So it was with comfortable acceptance that Ernie boarded the train for the first time. He ended up sitting with some second year boys from Ravenclaw, and enjoyed listening to them talk about classes and Professors and what they had learned over the summer. The boat ride over to the school was a little showy for his tastes, but the feast was quite nice, and he was happily sorted into Hufflepuff. The first year was quite nice. He made friends with Justin Finch Fletchley, Susan Bones, and Hannah Abbot. He enjoyed his classes, and did fairly well in all of them. There was a bit of kerfuffle at the end of the year, and really it wasn’t fair for that Potter to take the win away from Slytherin, but really it was none of Ernie’s business what the Headmaster wanted to do. Second Year was simple enough, at first. But the hullabaloo with the Heir of SLytherin was a bit of a mess. He was sure it was that brash Potter boy behind it all, even if he had seemed a nice enough chap before. But no good came from speaking Parsletongue. Unfortunately his friend Justin was petrified soon after. He was furious with Potter, sure he had done it out of spite. He wanted to get even with the terrible boy, but refrained. It was against the rules to duel another student. But it didn’t stop him from saying truly horrible things about Potter behind his back. He was glad he’d never fought him once Hermione Granger was petrified, he knew Potter wouldn’t have done that to his best friend. But in the end all was put right, and Ernie was glad the year of general upset was over. It was time to get back to normal, thank you very much. Third and Fourth year were generally the same. There was some excitement, what with Dementors and Tri Wizard Tournaments and all, but really none of the affected Ernie. He trusted the teachers to know what they were doing. It was quite nice to see a Hufflepuff fighting for the glory of the school, and once again that Potter was trying to take the glory for himself. But Ernie didn’t like to get involved. He was much happier watching from the sidelines. But when Diggory died and Potter began his talk of You-Know-Who returning, Ernie knew he needed to make a decision. He chose to believe in Potter, mainly because Dumbledore seemed to believe it too, and Ernie couldn’t imagine the Headmaster being wrong. Fifth year was the most vexing of them all. OWLS were coming up, and he wasn’t being allowed to study properly for Defense Against the Dark Arts! He knew how important it was going to be for the test, but more than that, he was beginning to see how important it was going to be for the future. When Potter started Dumbledores Army he joined up right away. Sixth Year was strangely anti-climatic. He had thought that, with You-Know-Who officially out in the open, that everything would change. It didn’t. Classes went on, NEWTS were a year away. And even though he had expected change, he was incredibly glad to return to the staus quo. He liked it there. It was safe. When the Death Eaters invaded the castle Ernie didn’t even know they were they were there. He had hung up his DA hat two years ago and never thought to check his coin. He only realized something was going on when he heard a commotion and Potter rushed by his dorm. The death of Dumbledore was a great blow to Ernie. He had greatly admired the Headmaster and couldn’t really believe he was gone. And things got worse from there. Snape, the traitor, took over the Headmaster position. The Carrows ran the school roughshod, and everything school was supposed to represent was thrown by the wayside. It was a difficult decision, siding with Neville against the teachers, but in the end it was the absence of Justin and Hannah that sealed it for him. This wasn’t right, and he was going to fight. He joined the others in the final battle for Hogwarts, and never regretted it. Aftermath Ernie was glad to see that, after the war, things seemed to be going in the right direction. He believed in Shaklebolt as Minister, and was equally pleased with appointment of Minister Diggory. He’d known the man before his appointment, and knew he was honest and fair. He got a job at the Ministry in the Improper use of Magic department and worked his way up to Junior Undersecretary. This allowed him to sit in on trials and take notes, which he quite enjoyed. It was lovely seeing justice being served. He was also pleased to see the changes that new Ministry was making to the Wizarding World. The former Death Eaters were justly punished, and the muggleborns were no longer treated as second class citizens. It did throw him for somewhat of a loop when all purebloods had to have their wands monitored, but he knew that Minister Diggory had their best interests at heart. He gladly let them track him, and was always quite punctual with his check ins. After all, he had nothing to hide. Now Ernie is a bit dismayed by what seems to be far too much unrest. The Ministry clearly knows what it’s doing, and he doesn’t understand how clever people like Hermione Granger can speak against it. He is making a point of speaking out against that slanderous sort of talk, and he always puts the good of the Ministry first. He staunchly believes that eventually everyone will see the good Minister Diggory is doing, and everything will be lovely again. SAMPLES JOURNAL ENTRY: I must admit I’m rather baffled and concerned by the blatant anti-ministry sentiments I’ve been seeing. They’re cropping up in the oddest of places, and I do not understand the need for them. Surely you must see how much good our dear Minister has done for us these past years. The economy is thriving jobs are at an all time high, and our citizens safety has never been more guaranteed. Indeed, I urge you all to bring any concerns you may have to me, that I may assuage your fears. All is quite well, and I do hope you’ll come to see that soon.
