EXTENDED:
• The Macdonalds are a very, very minor branch of Clan Donald, but they're still considered part of it.
• Mary also considers Robert's family part of her own, even if it's not official yet, but they've been in her life so long that they basically are.
PETS / FAMILIAR: A Birman cat, affectionately known as Napoleon, as he frequently comandeers warmth from any source available, including but not limited to her head when she's sleeping.

APPEARANCE

Mary is on the shorter side, and still rather bitter about it if she's being honest. Her dark brown hair falls past her shoulders, and often curly and getting in the way of everything. Usually she lets it, but if she's brewing or at work, then Mary absolutely puts it up; she can't have any stray ingredients, even so much as a hair, make its way into her cauldron. She dresses for comfort, but that's not to say she allows herself to go out in public looking like she rolled out of bed five seconds ago. Having grown up in Scotland, comfortable clothes generally meant cooler temperatures, so mostly jeans and jumpers and the like, unless it was nice enough to wear a dress for once. Mary enjoys looking feminine and pretty, after all; she just doesn't like a morning routine that lasts more than a half-hour. She's naturally a pretty girl, anyway, maybe a bit flatter than she'd like, but she has the luxury of not needing to do too much to look presentable. Mary always wears a signet gold ring with her family crest on her right ring finger, and a small gold cross on a chain tucked under her shirt.

DETAIL

HAPPIEST MEMORY: Stepping into Diagon Alley for the first time, really understanding that yes, she is a witch, there is a reason for all the weird things that have happened to, around, and because of her, and that there is a place for her in this world.
WORST MEMORY: Being cornered by Mulciber and almost being forced to, well, let's not go into detail.
GREATEST FEAR: Being weak and helpless for her entire life.
GREATEST DESIRE: To help others.
PATRONUS: She's never been able to produce a corporeal one, just a silver mist, but if she could, it would be a turtle.
SPECIAL SKILLS: None, unless you count the ability to comprehend rapid Gaelic.
STRENGTHS: Rational, intelligent, diplomatic, fairly attractive, kind, patient, easy to talk to, pleasant, thorough in all decisions she makes (although that can backfire on her just as easily). Took a self-defense class the summer after her fifth year and can now flip a man on his back without thinking twice about it.
WEAKNESSES: Indecisive, shy, frightened easily, often dependent on others, very emotional at the most inopportune times, can be rather naïve when it comes to judging a bad situation or someone's character, idealistic.
LIKES: Thai food, reading, her cat Napoleon, her family and friends, making potions, Charms, volunteer work, a world where she doesn't have to worry about reading her friends' names on the casualties list in the Prophet, white wine
DISLIKES: Death Eaters/blood purists, Arithmancy, being short, propaganda, pears

THE PAST

Born into a Muggle family, Mary experienced a rather normal childhood, even boring, you might say, but perfectly happy. The Macdonalds were never what you would call wealthy, but they lived comfortably in the crofting village of Tarskavaig on the Isle of Skye. Her father Bruce worked out in the fields, and her mother was a teacher at the local primary school. When Mary received her letter at their cottage, the Macdonalds were more than a little taken aback; they'd never had a witch in the family. Magic wasn't supposed to be real. It was her grandmother who talked sense into her parents, in the end. She'd always been more than a little superstitious (a spiritualist, she called it), and saw this as a blessing for their family more than anything.

So Mary went off to Hogwarts, only to turn twelve a few weeks into her first year, but what could you do. She was instantly enchanted by this magical realm, and immediately felt both at home, but also very much out of her depth. There were so many people who already knew so much more than she did. How could she ever catch up? Still, she persevered, and found magical school, well, magical. It came as a shock to Mary when she discovered that some kinds didn't want people like her there, though, and honestly, she was incredibly hurt by that realization. She was a witch; she had magic. Why shouldn't she be allowed to go to Hogwarts? But Mary managed to ignore most of these naysayers, and focused on what was important: her studies and her friends. So Mary did just that, paying little mind to the blood purists who thought they were better than her, at least until The Incident in fifth year, when bloody Mulciber thought it was necessary to "teach her some respect for her betters."

After that, Mary took her safety into her own hands, rather than allowing someone else to come to her rescue. She was never going to let anyone make her feel so small, so defenseless ever again, so Mary resigned herself to studying harder than ever. That was the day Mary decided she wanted to become a Healer, because while she very much wanted to stop the bullies from ever hurting anyone again, she also knew her strengths, and her strengths were in medicine rather than combat. Mary just didn't have the personality for being an Auror, and besides, she'd never been all that brave. Seeing a mouse run across the floor still made her want to squeak and jump onto the nearest available piece of furniture. So Mary went a different route. She finished school with excellent marks, and a confidence that she'd never had in herself before. She was happy. She had a purpose.
