It's unavoidable.

It was her day off. With that day off, Tess had a schedule of tedious, boring and yet altogether unavoidable errands planned. It was mid-week – the morning so far was as normal and unremarkable as any other morning set aside for getting shit done – and the efficiency of it fell into a lull at the bank. Doesn't it always? And why weren't any of these people working, anyway? It's like that odd phenomenon of traffic at two o'clock in the afternoon on a weekday when everybody else in the world ought to be be where they should be already – not on the road. Such was the ➟ volume of the line for the teller's counter. Only four of eight tellers were present and the reception was filled with guests waiting on loan specialists or client services.

Inquiring about opening a new checking account left Tess amid the others piling onto standard office chairs in a dull shade of burgundy, leafing through financial magazines or else zeroed into social media on phones. The magazines bored her and her own cell phone was dead in her jacket pocket. That left the next best thing - chatting. Or maybe the best thing. She very much preferred exchanging real words - with her voice - over stabbing at a like button or deciphering text speak. (She’d been the victim of such miscommunication a few too many times.) But the neighbor to her left wore his ear buds and the one to her right didn’t warm up to even her very warmest, inviting smile. Maybe he was suspicious of her sunglasses. Who wore them inside?

How long had she been waiting? Unable to reach for her phone to check the time, she twisted a bit in her seat for a look around the lobby in search of a clock. Ah, five minutes. Was that all? Why was she even complaining? Because she was impatient and antsy and physically incapable of sitting still for long periods of time even on a good day. to be continued...
