Desmond makes about 700 galleons a month from his job as well, and having been well-off since he was born helps keep him in the upper portion of the middle class. If there is any reason for why his personal financial status doesn't get pushed up into the richer class is because he's a spender. Wand: Ollivander, maple, 9.5", phoenix feather physical: Height // Build: 5'9" // tall, lean but built and rather imposing Eyes // Hair: Brown / Dark brown Style of dress: Auror uniform at work, but outside of that, he prefers dressing down into just pants and a tee of the lighter neutral colours (white, khaki, etc.). Basically, it must be something he can move around in easily. First Impression: "Was that a smile or a twitch?" General Description & Distinguishing Marks: Trainees know better than to question him the moment Desmond walks into the room. With a gruff tone of voice, he has an uncanny ability to just make the room listen to him, though some of it can be attributed to his tall build, and the crisp and clean way he presents himself. If he's in a good mood, there will be just a hint of a bemused smile on his face but for the most part, the public sees a gruff bloke who is very serious about his work and doesn't have time to smile right now because he's busy glaring at his trainees to work harder. Desmond is also rather agile on his feet and can move from place to place very quickly, able to dodge a crowd despite his height and big feet. His dark brown hair is sleeked back at the beginning of the day, but loose tendrils will fall over his forehead by mid-afternoon, ignored until some dinner date that night. PB: Jon Hamm personality: General Personality: Desmond Savage has a personality that can be seen from across the room, even if you're seeing him for the first time in your life. Anybody can take a look at the face of seriousness and his gait into the room to know that he is very focused and a by-the-books type of guy. His trainees have a firsthand experience of all this and lots more. He's persistent and pushy, laying out all the rules that he expects to be followed, no questions asked. The Auror handbook is basically his Bible. And he wouldn't have gotten to that position without the amount of ambition and drive in his veins. Having always suffered from Middle Child Syndrome, Desmond is an overachiever, as a result of insecurity and feels the need to excel in everything in order to get more attention than the eldest and youngest siblings. Occasionally, this drive has manifested into jealousy when not all of his accomplishments are made obvious. Hey, he wants to impress, and when that fails, it puts him into a rather sour mood. Ambition, in turn, is fueled by a very high level of curiosity, especially when it came to his Hogwarts studies. Knowledge is power, they say, and it seemed that his professors knew the exact buttons to press to get him to open up a book and figure out why something was, and how a certain spell was done. Desmond always hungers for new experiences, and this applies not just to acquiring knowledge but also in personal relationships. There is no beating around the bush here, no fluff or sugar-coating either. When Desmond wants to know something, he'll ask the clear-cut questions and expect clear-cut answers. (He's almost scary in the interrogation rooms.) There is a difference between how he acts with civilians and how he acts with his trainees and how he acts with close family and friends. Civilians and trainees see the ruthless right-down-to-business Auror while those who are closer to him see a little more emotional depth to him. As secretive as he may think he is, loved ones can see that he's pretty charismatic and enjoys meeting new people. He cares for his trainees and pushes them because he wants to see them make it through the training. Loved ones also see that he can get emotionally attached to someone and have seen both the positive and negative of that on him -- the positive shines through his relations with his family and especially his son, while the negative comes in form of selfishness and sometimes a bit of vindictiveness. Not only does Desmond like recognition on his work, but he also tends to spoil himself with material possessions. He's a big spender and prefers to live in luxury. With a hefty Auror salary, most of what he buys is what he can afford, luckily for him. Mind you, his career still takes up a large percentage of his active brain cells. Strengths & Weaknesses: Massive amounts of ambition plus the follow-what-is-given-to-me type of guy is the kind of guy that the Ministry will bloody well by a house for. Desmond is able to stay motivated to get a task done on time, usually well before needed. Despite his insecurity, working to get what he wants and then accomplishing him that gives him a pretty brilliant feeling that drives him to get up every moment and walk into the training room every day. However, Desmond is a lot more sensitive than most of the world population would know. And his emotions tend to get the better of him in personal relationships. Jealousy and stubbornness are huge issues for him, that for the most part, he finds it a lot easier on his mental health to just remain detached from people in general. Mental Health: Through a psychoanalytic stand-point, Desmond is seen as having neurotic needs for prestige and personal achievement -- public acclaim, large accomplishments, need to keep up a social status, and trying to top all of his own successes. His neurosis has basically resulted from the typical Middle Child Syndrome of feeling ignored and that he must do something great to be recognized. Besides that, Desmond's mental health is sound. He can be calm and rational under a high level of stress as it is essential for Auror training. And while the rest of the world can be screaming and crying in sheer mutiny, Desmond's mind can kick into auto-mode and react quickly to save as many people as he can. With the amount of years he has on himself, he can remain level-headed and able to push himself forward to do his job. magical training & occupation: School: Hogwarts House: Slytherin Years: 1955-1962 Prefect/Quidditch/School activities: Prefect 1960-1962, Quidditch Chaser 1957-1962 & Captain 1960-1962 N. E. W. T. Scores: Potions - O Magical Strengths: Desmond's magical ability expand over the variety of required courses and skills that is necessary in being an Auror, but as an Auror, the biggest strength lies in Defence Against Dark Arts. On the field, he can take the offensive stand on stealth operations, where his highest proficiency lies in wordless hexes and jinxes, but what he's internalized is the first thing that he teaches his trainees -- defense, defense, defense. Kicking ass and taking names is important too, but what Desmond believes is utmost crucial is the sleight to protect oneself from harm as well as civilians that would need it. Wordless magic also comes in very good use when putting up a strong shield charm or protection wards. Magical Weaknesses: While he's done pretty damn good in his grades in his opinion, Desmond is better off sticking to the hexes and jinxes than resort to any creative method of battle, like say... turning a Death Eater into a teacup. Transfiguration was never his strongest forte and he marvels in himself to have passed that class with an E anyway. Current Occupation: Ministry Auror trainer Previous Jobs: Auror trainee 1962-1965 How is your character involved in the war? Desmond is standing right there at the heart of the battlefield. He's an Auror, a Dark Wizard chaser, so he's pretty much neck-deep involves in the war. Being of Team Defense, he is one of the many relied upon heavily to protect as many people as possible, huddle and shield the innocents before there is any more unnecessary bloodshed. The pressure is great since the public makes up the need for the MLE to exist, but Desmond keeps striving forward, willing to place his life on the line for the public. family & relationships: Immediate (& Influential) Family: Father: Marcus Savage Family Relationships: Desmond's relationship with Marcus and Camille Savage can be described as functional with a few holes here or there that need to be patched up. It wasn't that there were ever any daddy or mommy issues as he grew up, but Desmond's view of his parents is that he would always have to try his damn hardest to show them what he can do. His parents, meanwhile, keep their pampering at a reasonable level, but still love their second child as much as they love their other two children. Nonetheless as a middle child, Desmond will always believe that he is going to need to put in a little more effort to impress them and this usually brings about resigned sighs from both parties when one comes to visit for dinner. David is not that far away in age from his brother, and so, Desmond has always been super close to him that growing up, they had been mistaken for twins. As the eldest, David will always have the need to coddle him, reassure him, and offer guidance, ignoring all of Desmond's "I know what I'm doing". There were obviously far more hugs when they were babies, but the immense love is still there -- only now, it is mostly exhibited through verbal fencing and brief smiles. And despite how much he'd deny that he does, Desmond still looks up to David like a mentor. Christal started out as the threat to Desmond's Baby Of The Family position and he first greeted her with a smack of his hand to her forehead. And essentially was punished for it. This could have been the beginnings of an epic rivalry, and their parents feared this too, but Desmond eventually outgrew his jealousy phase (for the most part). Christal is still the baby of the family, and her brothers don't let her forget it. Desmond and Gwendolyn may not have had a long-lasting relationship, but he has nothing but the utmost respect for her, even if he could pick out of a few of her vices and explain in detail about how much they annoyed him. She was a friend first and foremost before becoming a wife. Their marriage had hit several deep potholes in the streets but as far as Desmond can tell, things have seemed to have gotten easier after the divorce. Emrys is not living with his father anymore, and there isn't a day that Desmond doesn't resent this. He understands to some point that it is better this way because of his career choice, but the last thing he could ever have wanted was to part with his son. Emotionally and mentally, however, there are still the connections between father and son. They send each others letters while Emrys is in Hogwarts... and on some vacation days when Desmond finds the ability to peel away from work, they spend time together, going out to watch a Quidditch game or playing one-on-one in their own backyards. Sexual Preference: Heterosexual Significant Other: None at the moment history: Childhood: Desmond Savage was born into the Savage family, in 1943, some time after his older brother David. With Grindelwald's army still in midst of terrorizing Europe, it was a harsh time to be raising two babies, especially when his defeat wouldn't come until Desmond was two. But the family pulled through it, staying quiet and unnoticed. A third child wouldn't be born to them until several years down the line when they would have Christal Savage, not until they were completely sure that the wars had ended. Having an older brother was all dandy because David didn't feel much of an older brother at that time, but a younger sister was something very knew and, at first, very discomforting. As he grew, however, he became relatively assured that she wasn't going to steal the family away completely -- not if he started fighting for the limelight. His first sign of showing magic came when a toy quaffle flew from Christal's hand into his own because he insisted it belonged to him. Obviously, Desmond was going to follow his brother and his parents into Hogwarts. Hogwarts/School: By the time Desmond reached the age to enter school, Tom Riddle had already studied and left, and so he wouldn't find out much about him as he entered Hogwarts and was sorted into Slytherin. At once, he took to his studies, achieving high grades since his first year with the exception of a few electives that he eventually decided were just not his cup of tea. Ancient Runes and Astronomy? Ugh, never mind those. He was far more skilled at Defence Against Dark Arts and Charms. Potions was a fun subject too, and actually his favourite when he first started out. His preference eventually pushed over to Defence Against Dark Arts in his later years when he started considering what he really wanted to do in his life. In his third year, Desmond tried out of the Quidditch team and became a Chaser. It was the ideal position for him, but he feared that he might not get the spot at first since it was rather popular with the other blokes in his House. When he received the spot, his father bought him a shiny new broom-care kit, instead of suggesting to him that he borrow David's kit. Two years later, Desmond became a prefect. However, he was never given the Head Boy position which came as a gigantic disappointment, but he didn't shirk in his responsibilities in that last year. Desmond's professors helped to shed light on all the possible careers he could pursue after school and his eyes immediately lit with curiosity when one discussed the Magical Law Enforcement with him. His strengths in Defence, Charms and Potions were basically all signs pointing to "Auror". While his professors helped with his career, his peer relations helped with another department in his life. Desmond met Gwendolyn in his fifth year was immediately smitten. And he worked his arse off to get her to notice him and then date him for the rest of the school year. By seventh year, he was pretty sure of himself that out of all the girls he had dated, she was the one who could keep him happy for life. Recent History: The time right after Hogwarts was very very busy. Desmond jumped right into Auror training in that same year, and he would train for the next three years. In midst of it, he and Gwendolyn continued their relationship and eventually were married. The wizarding world was still quiet for the most part but Desmond still took his work very seriously and tried as much as he could to balance out work and married life. After his wedding, the next happiest day in his life was when Emrys Savage, his son, was born in 1966. Twenty-two too young of an age for a father? Desmond hardly thought so. However, two years later, Tom Riddle returned as Lord Voldemort, thus beginning the imbalance between work and home for Desmond. When Emrys was four, Voldemort started his first few attacks on Muggleborns. Because of the increasing amount of alarm in the department, Desmond began to become more focused on work while home had started to take up a smaller amount of head space. Gwendolyn saw this... and she was not pleased. It started out as tiny things like a cold shoulder due to unkept promises, and soon escalated to half-hour-long arguments. They tried and tried for months but Desmond had a sinking realization that Gwendolyn was going to make him choose between his job and his family. One more dinner that he missed and Gwendolyn walked out with her son in her arms and her bags packed. Splitting up was hardly an easy endeavor and it would take the couple several weeks before they were able to come to some sort of compromise. They eventually got a divorce with Gwendolyn having full custody over Emrys. The time following the divorce wasn't so simple at first either, what with Desmond's resentments and vindictive behavior toward the woman who took his child away. But Gwendolyn was a lot more tolerable than anyone could give her credit for and after what was probably months, things started to smooth out for her and Desmond to a point where he could realize that his job made is very difficult for his son to live with him. And that is taking into account how the number of deaths and disappearances escalated in the years following. Desmond continues to work as an Auror, in charge of training the new recruits and tries as much as he can to spend time with his son when Emrys is off from Hogwarts. → ic: samples First Person Sample: [ Warded to Self ] Third Person Sample: Bloody inbox, bloody automatic fill. How many of these papers were just pranks being played on him, Desmond had to consider as he finally pushed himself out of the department and toward the Atrium. |
