Avery has always had a feminine appearance. She's loved everything girly her whole life. Though she doesn't put a ton of stock in make-up, she loves feminine clothing. She's not living her life in pink and sparkles, though. When it comes to clothes, she prefers fit over how comfortable it is, erring for things to fit well and accentuate her style more than anything else. Having had no control over her fashion for a long time, she likes to put some effort into her appearance.
personality
Anxious is putting it mildly. Avery has quite a few hang ups, and her personality matches someone who has been put through the things she has. She spent most of her childhood in foster homes, eventually landing in a "group home" when she was deemed too much to handle. She's always been an anxious type, though she used to be quite outspoken even with all her fears. Growing up in foster and group homes has given her little in the sense of parental guidance or of feeling particularly loved. She has a deep, firm belief that she is unlovable and has trouble loving others because of it. Like there's some defect in her that is just too much for anyone to handle. That her feelings are a burden, that she as a person is a burden to anyone who comes near her. She has always felt like that, even before her abilities manifested.

A touch neurotic and with a good case for having Generalized Anxiety Disorder, she never really got along with other children well. Sometimes she'd find someone who was nice to her and she would cling to them, but then they'd be adopted or moved to another home. She learned not to develop very close connections, and had trouble finding common ground with other kids her age. Establishing bonds with anyone can be tough on a normal basis, and she just doesn't have the trust in others or herself enough to be anything other than superficial and skittish.

With her ability, though - she often finds herself overwhelmed. She's easily manipulated and suggestible. She has no idea she even has abilities, and is firm in her belief that there is something mentally wrong with her. She is hypersensitive and nervous, but given the nature of her empathy being 'always on' in a way, she can be influenced by the moods of other people. This in cases before she knew what was happening caused people to believe she was an attention seeker, dramatic, and overwhelming. Like she has no backbone or thoughts of her own. She does, they're just hard to identify and she can hardly present anythings being what she really wants or feels.

That isn't to say she doesn't want at all - she does. Avery is desperate for connection and friendships, she just doesn't know how to obtain them. Given her new freedom and the feeling that maybe she does have an ability and she's not just insane has her, for the first time in ages, on the brink of feeling hopeful.
abilities
→ EMPATHY: She can feel, very acutely, the feelings of those around her. Even rooms or objects can have a feeling if there was just a highly emotional event that happened in or about them. She can feel everyone's emotions at once in a rather large range - though it's impossible to tell because emotions are so finicky. It feels like she's feeling everyone, it's too convoluted to really work out what emotion belongs to which person. It's possible, if she's known the person well or very intimately, but it not something one recognized easily.

Along with feeling emotions, Avery can broadcasting her own emotions. She can do now accidentally if she's having a kind of "emotional event" but has trouble doing it on purpose. It's not something she has any real control over. She doesn't technically need to feel the emotion herself to do this to other people - if she really tried and had a sort of sense of control over her own mutation, she would be able to make other people feel things without feeling the emotion herself.

However, Avery has little to no control over her own ability on the regular. She has difficulty deciphering her own emotions from other's and is highly suggestible. Controlling it takes an enormous amount of effort, and she's often out for days from feeling everything alone. Actual purposeful use and control is exhausting. She suffers from migraines, dizziness, and fainting spells.

→ PAIN MANIPULATION: This is more particular than her empathy and deserves a section of its own. Though pain is a physical feeling, it's also quite an emotionally linked one as well. Avery can feel the injuries (past or present) of the people around her and cause them to relive the pain they experienced from those injuries, or from the injuries of someone near them. Considering she has little to no knowledge of her own abilities, Avery cannot control this and frequently feels the pain herself as well as whoever else is feeling it. More positively, Avery can take people's pain away.
five.
Avery's life has been full of strife. Her mother disappeared when she was quite young, and her father was never in the picture to begin with. Maybe she was a fussy baby, or her mother was hard-on-luck but she was given up at four. She was too old for the people who wanted a baby, and she wasn't the most responsive child. Shoved into foster home after foster home, she was repeatedly moved due to the hopeless nature of foster care. She was fine at first, though the homes she was in were neglectful at best - but more desperate situations caused her to speak out. However, privatized foster care just meant that she was deemed the problem, moved, and placed in equally bad care.

Shortly before the incident in 2012 that caused all the radiation panic, Avery was placed in a group home where she met Jake. She was just 13 and she looked up to him quite a bit, him being an older kid. The whole situation was short lived though - many of the kids had been exposed to radiation at that point and were starting to exhibit abilities. Avery didn't know she was as well - but there was definitely more chaos when she was upset, and the people who ran the group home quickly started to suspect that she, too, had some kind of ability even if it wasn't as obvious as some of the others. All she knew was that she was barely a teenager, scared to death, and some people came to question them and then - they were taken.

She spent five years there being experimented on. Almost the entire time, she spent in isolation. Her ability was heightened by the emotional turmoil of everything, and she often (and wholly accidentally) broadcast her emotions on the people around her. If she was let out at all to socialize, she was heavily sedated or medicated in some way. Even if she was let out, Avery can't remember it. All she remembers is feeling terrified, being moved around, and... Bambi. The boy in the cell next to her, whom she never saw but who she was able to speak to frequently. They developed a sort of bond through their mutual imprisonment.

Then, when they realized they weren't going to get much else out of her, they kicked her out. Just dropped her off at Destruction Island where she detoxed from the many medications she had been on for her abilities, mental illness, whatever it was. She is fresh out of Riken and the hospital, and just now able to see the real world again - even if it is on a government controlled quarantine island.
