PERSONALITY Mind my simple song, this ain't gonna work mind my wicked words and tipsy topsy smirk Hardworking, Friendly, Focused, Obsessive, Selfish If you look up the definition of Quidditch Fanatic you'd find Oliver's picture. Some joke his first word was 'quaffle', while others say his obsession was bred into his genes. Either way, Oliver was exposed to the sport before he was born and remains tightly bound to this day. Step into his flat and you'll find framed posters of iconic matches, books crammed onto the shelves ranging in subject from the history of Quidditch to in depth physics of Quaffle throwing to autobiographies of famous players. He can quote nearly any statistic at the drop of a hat and will fiercely defend this knowledge. Oliver lives and breathes Quidditch. There are other aspects to him, though, that rarely shine through. Like the fact he is very into maintaining his body's peak physical condition and enjoys reading in depth muggle medical articles on physiology. He loves muggle action films and isn't completely terrible at wizard chess. He has every novel written by Jane Austin hidden at his parent's home near Loch Shin and knows the stories by heart. He can tell you about every running trail in London and has recently taken up surfing. Few see this side of Oliver, however. Perhaps it is due to the fact most people don't take him very seriously (to be fair, he doesn't even take himself seriously most of the time). His warm, open personality causes people to gravitate to him. Most of these people really only hang around because Oliver is a fan of buying rounds of pints and they can brag about hanging out with one of England's biggest rising Quidditch stars. Sure, deep down it bothers him, but Oliver knows that he has a small set of friends who he can always count on and will always be there. They know the real him, and he knows they will always be there for him. Despite seeming to have everything going for him Oliver has never had much success with women. Quite honestly, he's never been good with them. It isn't as though he is hurting in the female attention; he has plenty of that. The main issue is these women only see him as the silly Quidditch star that can't seem to talk about anything else, who may or may not have a slight drinking problem and when he isn't yammering on and on about that damned sport is a bit of a horndog. A negative side of Oliver is his tendency to be selfish. He doesn't act selfish out of spite or even consciously, it is simply the fact he, being the middle child, is absolutely terrified of mediocrity and feels immense pressure to be the absolute very best in whatever it is he sets out to do. Because of this trait others - often lovers - tend to fall to the wayside as his drive to be the best overrides everything else in his life. Oliver is surrounded by the absolute best team Puddlemere has to offer: from his agent to his PR rep to his publicist and beyond; because of this he is a bit out of touch with the real world. He doesn’t mean to be, but having been coddled his whole life by his parents, driven hard to achieve the best and then snapped up by Puddlemere and kept in a protective bubble does make one a bit out of touch with the world. Oliver firmly believes in fairness and hard work. Sure, he could probably get away with murder, but his consciousness just wouldn't feel right. His strong sense of right and wrong has won him a lot of respect both on and off the field. He demands a lot from his teammates, but he'd never cut corners or take the easy way out. There is no 'I' in team, and if you cheekily respond 'but there is a ‘me' you'll get a serious lecture on the spirit of teamwork. This moral compass often gets him in trouble in interviews, and he often has to apologize for not meaning whatever it was that he had said... he usually meant it the other way. While Oliver tends to act first and apologize later, he always means well. He's been likened to a big, dumb golden dog who is full of boundless energy, wanting live his life to the fullest and love everyone. LIKES: Quidditch; Fitness; Surfing; Muggle Cinema; Reading; Being outside in general (he gets antsy being cooped up inside); Flying; His family; Hanging out at the pub; long bubble baths; fans; sweets DISLIKES: Lemons; rude reporters; disrespecting Quidditch; cheating on a game; sneakiness; media manipulation; invasion of his privacy; losing; glory-hounds; his little brother being upset
BIOGRAPHY We were born to make history Childhood: In 1969 Angus Wood married Penelope Astor. They'd met on the Quidditch pitch during a match for Pride of Portree, where he noticed a pretty witch selling sweets and various merchandise in the stands. A famed Beater on the rise to stardom, the two moved quickly from dating to marriage within two years. Angus’ decision to move to a reserve position in 1970 following the birth of their first child, Edwardine, made headlines: was he the ideal family man setting aside career for his family or was the decision fully his? This reserve position lead into retirement four short years later and a year following their first son, Oliver, was born on January 8th. Lastly, the final son, Logan, in 1978. Oliver had always been a rough-and-tumble type of child, laughing with glee as his father tossed him from high places or zoomed around the Scottish countryside as fast as his trusty Shooting Star would carry them. Angus loved all his children, but he bonded the most with Oliver; especially when it came to Quidditch. When Logan grew out of infancy he was able to keep up with his father and brother they grew into quite a trio. The Wood house was always a center of loud, boisterous fun. The three men were rarely seen apart, especially during Quidditch season when Angus would take his boys to as many matches as possible, with the highlight of a two week camping trip during the World Cup in his very roomy tent. In 1987 Oliver boarded the train for Hogwarts and joined his sister in Gryffindor, where she was already a Prefect. Oliver enjoyed being at school and immediately felt comfortable in his new house. He excelled at Charms and found Transfiguration interesting, but looked forward to flying lessons the most. Oliver wasn't a stellar student... to be honest he wasn't even a good student. He tried, of course, but his mind simply wandered out the window and to the courtyard where flying lessons would take place every Wednesday at 3pm. In his second year Oliver joined the Gryffindor Quidditch team, wowing Charlie Weasley and landing a spot as their new Keeper. Over the next few years his focus shifted more to Quidditch instead of his classes. He skated by with his natural ability in Charms and somehow seemed able to BS his way through A History of Magic, but the more concrete, fact-based subjects he struggled with. If you ask about his time at Hogwarts he will tell you every Quidditch match, every training session, the long hours with Charlie drafting up different play schemes and the early mornings testing them out. There was no surprise when Oliver took over as captain for Gryffindor during his fifth year upon Charlie's graduation. Living up to the second eldest Weasley son's legacy was going to be quite a challenge, and for once he felt an extreme amount of pressure at school...until Harry Potter joined the team as the youngest Seeker in a century. Professor McGonagall talked up Potter's skills, but only when Oliver took the famed Boy who Lived out to the pitch did he feel a sense of relief. Inspired by their first win, in which Harry caught the Snitch in the first five minutes of the game, Oliver felt confident the Quidditch Cup would be in Gryffindor's possession. ...And then Harry, Charlie's youngest brother, and that puffy-haired witch cost Gryffindor 150 points in a single night. A single night!. Oliver tried to be impartial, giving Harry a pep talk and refusing to let him resign, but he would be lying if he said he didn't want to shout and shake some sense into Harry. They could bounce back, with hard work. He just knew it. Then Harry ended up in the hospital and his team suffered the worst defeat in three-hundred years at the hands of Ravenclaw... with his younger brother, Logan, scoring the winning throw. It was the lowest point of Oliver's young life. He couldn't even focus and completely bombed his OWLs. For the first month of his summer holiday he moped in his bedroom, seriously pondering giving up his role as captain; he clearly wasn't fit to carry Charlie's torch. It didn't help that Logan was gloating about his victory every chance he could. Finally, Angus had enough and took Oliver camping. Getting out of the house and flying with his father helped to clear his head and at the start of year six, Oliver came back with more fire than ever. To the team's annoyance Oliver implemented a heavy training schedule, strict diet outlines, bedtimes, and even 'de-stressing hour' every day. This manic schedule seemed to have been working, scoring Gryffindor a win against Slytherin, only for their efforts to be dashed when the Chamber of Secrets was rumored to have been opened and halted Quidditch for the rest of the year. Of course Oliver cared about the safety of his fellow students, though his opinions came across as a little... insensitive. Year Seven would have to be it; his last chance for glory. The first Quidditch match of the season was a set-back, with Harry falling off his broom, as he was apt to do. Cedric Diggory had caught the Snitch, and the Hufflepuff Captain offered a rematch. A part of Oliver wanted to accept, but he simply couldn't. There had been no foul play, just another set of unfortunate circumstances. The desire to win consumed Oliver like a disease: he couldn't sleep, eating was out of the question, and most days didn't bother to show up to class. He's not even sure he showed up to all his NEWTS. Eventually Professor McGonagall criticized him for being selfish and caring only about winning, a lecture that should have shaken some sense into Oliver... and it did in some ways, though it didn't manage to smother the raging fire to win. It took pushing his body to the absolute limit, risking illness, sanity and taking a handful of bludgers to the gut but Oliver finally accomplished his goal: seeing his team win the Quidditch House Cup. Adulthood: Of course Oliver would continue on the Quidditch path. No one was surprised when he tried out, and was accepted to, Puddlemere United straight out of Hogwarts. He'd barely been home a week when he went to Dorset for their training camp. Despite being placed as a reserve Keeper, Oliver trained with the same focus and dedication as a starting player. Oh sure, some detractors would write his classically handsome features were winning him favor with the team's female administration, but Oliver knew better than that. He refused to take the bait and let anything stop him from achieving his dream of becoming Puddlemere's full-time Keeper. After two years of subbing and playing on reserve, Oliver was granted the honor of replacing Eren Lowry upon his retirement. Oliver's rise to Quidditch stardom was as fast as his flying, though he didn't let that stop him from returning to Hogwarts upon hearing the news his school was under attack. Oliver would never dare to say he fought anywhere near as bravely or as valiantly as some of his former teachers and schoolmates; despite being brave he could never have matched the courage of so many who gave their lives (some both he and Neville moved during Voldemort's cease fire). He didn't receive many physical wounds, but deep mental scars. If he was honest with himself this might have been the turning point when Oliver's trips to the pub became less about social gatherings and more about forgetting, but that truth is long buried. Harry’s death affected him far more than Oliver realized; of course he was there, with his friends and former schoolmates, demanding justice. Everything was swept up in a neat little bow and there simply wasn’t enough evidence Harry had been murdered. At first Oliver attempted to quit Quidditch in a show of solidarity. This, of course, was blocked by his management team and more importantly his family. They reasoned with Oliver, tried to make him see Harry’s murder was not some grand orchestrated plan. Oliver was needed, his manager insisted, because Quidditch was the only thing that could make others feel good: it kept a sense of normal in the chaotic time. Suddenly, Oliver’s schedule became packed with press conferences, abroad friendly matches, interviews, and the entire gauntlet of a media circus. He was being introduced to women through various colleagues, and above all being distracted. No one needed one of the most popular players in Britain questioning things. Above all the status quo needed to be maintained. Now, Oliver feels restless; he’s a star achieving everything he'd wanted in life, and yet the faces of school mates and friends would haunt him at night. Harry’s murder haunted him. He needed something. Something was missing. Oliver doesn't know how to properly maintain a relationship and looks for meaning in his otherwise empty life of interviews, parties, pub-nights, fans and autographs. He has to keep going, because the middle child terrified of mediocrity won’t let him not succeed, his family is counting on him to be the successful one, his team has invested a lot of money into Oliver and his success and above all he needs all this to feel a sense of self-worth.
