PERSONALITY

TOP 5 STRENGTHS:

Creative:
Emmeline was the type of Ravenclaw that was always scribbling on anything she could get ahold of. She kept a quill forever stuck within her unruly curls and could be found writing at the table during meals on napkins (the Hogwarts House Elves hated this as they constantly fought to get them back) or even on the backs of her hands. If found by others it would always be bits of turns of phrases, an observation or even just simple reminders. Emmeline was always writing and singing.

Idealistic:
True to her house, Emmeline was one for ideas and theories to be applied within the world. Though the world is set in tones of monochrome, Emmeline finds it frustrating. Things should be much clearly defined. People needed to have morals (the right kind, mind) and stick to them. How hard was it to understand the philosophies of the great classics? Everyone had inalienable rights. Supposed status like blood or money didn't necessarily make them better. Everyone bleeds the same and everyone dies just the same.

Free-Spirited:
Emmeline Vance can not be bothered to hold to Wizarding social constructs and barely the Muggle ones. She knows there is a big wide world out there with a sea of different perspectives and knowledge and she cares nothing for how she's viewed in the small fish bowl she may find herself from one place or another. And as she's gotten older, from one place or another Emmeline has wandered. She always had a desire to explore and gain knowledge through doing/experiencing. Not all of the knowledge in the world can be found in books. Experiences fill up the gaps.

Intellectual:
Emmeline was raised to think on a global scale and with her feet straddling the line of two realities and she held fast to that belief even if it gave her hell when at Hogwarts. She was viewed as other and strange because she would correct others thinking (even teachers when it came to Muggle topics) by using ideas and philosophies that many in the Wizarding World had no knowledge of. Emmeline was the Ravenclaw that got bad marks not because she was dim but because she doggedly included Muggle sources that she thought added a more cohesive argument to whatever she was writing about. Like many Ravenclaws, her Owl parcels would be delivered were books; but, what was different was the fact they were Muggle textbooks to study on the side for whatever year she was in.

Passionate:
There is a fire within Emmeline. It was snidely joked within her house that she was the Ravenclaw that should have been a Gryffindor. For when she thought she was right, Emmeline wouldn't back down from anyone mainly when it came to topics she was knowledgeable in. When she feels strongly about something, she rushes headlong into it heedless of social complications. It isn't from ignorance but because she can't fathom being wired any other way. Even if she intellectually knows the errors or dangers on the topic she feels passionate about, her idealism spearheads her into seeing it through. She had come out the other end of one of her best, worst, and most intensely life-changing relationships of her life because of this element within herself. It is also because of this brand of passion that she's become a reluctant activist because the world won't change unless there is a voice willing to be loud enough to be heard.

TOP 5 FLAWS:

Judgemental:
If your opinion sits in the house of selfish or elitist, Emmeline Vance is judging you. She also doesn't take well to idolicy and she can hold onto her opinions about a person almost to her last breath.

Mental Illness:
Emmeline has fought with bouts of depression for as long as she can remember. When she was a child, she would go through crying fits with sad frustration that would make lightbulbs pop or be dim for hours. She'd also go through spells where she'd feel exceedingly tired and sleep for hours at a time. While at Hogwarts, this cyclical habit would happen on the weekends unless she had friends force her out into the sunlight. Her depression got worst after the death of her mother from ovarian cancer. How her mother died only cemented Emmeline's belief that the Wizarding World was fooling itself that they were utterly separate or better than muggles.

Addictive Personality:
Emmeline tries to keep a tight hold of this now after the unexpected arrival of her new daughter Emma. Before when she was travel and felt lost, she self-medicated with drinking, taking hallucinogenic drugs, and smoking. She still does a bit of the drinking and smoking but tries to keep it out of Emma's sight. The drinking (and coupled writing) doesn't happen until after the little girl has well been to bed. It's a problem and Emmeline knows it.

Tempermental:
Because she's so passionate, the other side of that coin is temperamental. Being a fire sign seems to only exacerbate this problem that she'll have emotional outbursts like magically breaking objects about her much like she would as a child. Emmeline has gone through many a laptop or blackberries because of this.

Flighty:
This is also the tail side of one of her positive traits: Free Spirited. When things become too hard or too stagnant, Emmeline wants to pick up an move. Having a career that requires touring only enables this within her. Because of this flaw, Emmeline has seen a great deal of Europe and the Americas mostly traveling it throughout her years the muggle way.

GREATEST DESIRE/MOTIVATION:

Emmeline wants to make a difference in the world. Really, tangible difference. Her wildest desire is to see the Wizarding World (globally) completely integrate within the Muggle World. That there are no borders and the two truly know of the other. She also wants to see Wizarding England to become democratic much like how the Americas are. She also wants to see the Queen's head on a pike but she supposes she has to put some sort of practicality within her desires/motivations. Alas.

GREATEST FEAR:

Emmeline has many different sorts of fears. The most basic being loosing another child. The first year of Emma's life had Emmeline being a nervous wreck thinking there were dangers lurking at every corner or that was someone might jump out and kill Emma too. She also fears she'll get cancer much like her parents and leaving Emma an orphan but that doesn't stop her from drinking or smoking... Her more conceptual fear is that all of her writing, her singing, or her activism will amount to nothing by the time she dies.

ROYAL AMBITION:

To see it all burn to the ground for the a democracy to rise up in its place. And for most of the purists to be jailed or executed for their crimes. Mainly, the Queen but she'd deal with just a different form of power system, she supposes.

HISTORY

TOP 5 DEFINING MOMENTS:

You're a Witch, Emmeline.
Emmeline Vance was a normal baby in a very normal but respectable Northern suburb of London. She was developmentally solid and didn't have three eyes; so, her parents were thrilled. It wasn't until she had become a toddler that things would get prequliar. Funny things would happen about her sometimes but it was always brushed off by her parents as nothing serious. It was only when Emmeline got a bit older and an event happened at her primary school that it seemed Emmeline's parents started to become uncomfortable with their child. Then, when she was eleven, months before she'd have to go back to school, a barn owl with a letter showed up at the Vance's window.

The Sorting Hat:
To this day, Emmeline believes that the Sorting Hat didn't like her on her Sorting Day because they quarreled when it was placed on her head. she questioned its existence. She questioned if it was really alive with its own will and believes or was it just an animated puppet designed to find personality traits and sort 'accordingly'. That was the gist of what Emmeline asked it but set to the frame of a precocious eleven-year-old mind. The hat didn't take kindly to her line of questioning and after a bit of quarreling, the Sorting Hat screamed Ravenclaw a bit exasperatedly.

Dark Christmas of 1977:
Months before, the Vances had discovered that Margarine had stage four ovarian cancer and that there wasn't very much Muggle doctors could do about it. Emmeline felt trapped and powerless within the walls of Hogwarts as her mum suffered so far away. Desperate, Emmeline read anything she was allowed about curing that type of cancers with muggles. After reading everything she was allowed, she snuck into the sections she wasn't. In the end, days before everyone would leave Hogwarts for Christmas Holiday, Emmeline got a sad looking owl and a letter. Death had come to a weak and pain-riddled Margarine. The letter informing her had been from her dad, tear stained and apologetic. He still wanted to have some sort of Christmas... Emmeline didn't make it on the Express to go home. Instead, she stayed locked up in the Ravenclaw tower either crying or sleeping. She didn't even come down for the Christmas Dinner.

Sirius Black:
It was the same year that the Vances had found out about Margarine's cancer that Emmeline also became a Prefect for her House during her Fifth Year. The combination was a bit disasterous as she didn't have the attention or heart to do the role justice. Instead, between classes, Emmeline held herself up either in the Astromamy tower or lost in a sea of pillows in the Divination Room smoking Gillyweed or tripping on Psilocybin. It was one of these times, buried under pillows in the Divination Room that she heard the door open and a load of giggling. Feeling like a puddle, Emmeline listened as the couple turned to more serious activities. As it became the unmistakeable sounds of sex, Emmeline found some sort of will and pulled herself to lay on top of her pillows. With chin in palm and eyes heavily drooped, she found herself watching Prince Sirius Black and some Slytherin girl. She stayed that way, not saying a word like a mute Sphinx. She didn't quite process that she was in the Prince's line-of-sight until he looked up. They held each other's gaze and all Emmeline could come up with was lazily waving.

That encounter left the Slytherin girl unaware of an audience and no conflict. Instead, it seemed like Sirius and Emmeline kept running into each other. Namely, in her growing places to hide, get high, and sometimes read while he shagged some other flavour of the week. One day, at the top of Astomadmy, she heard the door open and then a framliar body sit next to her. Emmeline passed her Gillyweed without so much as looking up from her reading. They started to get to know each other; and with time, it became something more. It was the beginning of a passionate and tragic end. It was just them stealing days from the enviable march of Sirius' 'obligations'. He'd have to marry someone of 'good standing' at some point, wouldn't he? Someone as pure as snow. They both hated it. They fought over it. Then one day, when she was nineteen and he twenty, they married despite it. All bright eyed and idealistic that their young love and drive could change the whole system... They were fools.

Emmeline found herself pregnant and carried the baby to term. For only days she was a mother until men in masks broke into her home, subdued her, and murdered her daughter right before her eyes. It was the very same day, distracted with fighting against his mother that Sirius was being informed that his marriage was annulled and that he was forbidden to see Emmeline again. He had no say. Emmeline had no say. They had no daughter.

Emmeline had never fallen into such a dark place before after the murder of her daughter. For a week she waited for Sirius to show up then she just couldn't anymore.

Wandering Lost, Surprise Second Chances & Cancer Comes Home Again:
After the horrible end of her marriage and murder of her daughter, Emmeline she cut ties to it all. She packed everything she cared for into a bag, threw a guitar over her shoulder (a gift from Sirius) and left the Wizarding World. She wandered lost as a Muggle, getting herself to Europe first. She sang for a living. Local songs and the ones she couldn't stop writing about heartbreak and loss. When that didn't even feel far enough, Emmeline resurfaced into the Wizarding World just to hop a portkey to the Americas. Twenty-one and in a land familiar and utterly foreign all at once, she found her voice as a singer, a poet, a writer, and unexpectantly as an activist over the many years.

Her drinking, drug use, and promiscuity picked up between her traveling until one day she found herself staring at a pregnancy stick giving her the reality of things. At the age of thirty-four, Emmeline Vance was pregnant once more. It's what Emmeline needed to try and pull herself back from the brink and it did. Emma was born on July 4, 1996, and duel citizen. Emma's hair was darker than Emmeline's. Her eyes matching. Looking at Emma was like looking at the daughter that she had lost. Because of that, it made her think of Sirius again. It was like thinking of that distant place, invoking a name, caused for news from England to come flooding in. Emmeline's father emailed her that his doctor told him he had lung cancer from all those years of smoking.

Emmeline packed what was important and sold the rest. With Emma on her hip, Emmeline thrust herself and now her daughter back into the Wizarding World by taking a portkey back to England. She's renting a flat by her father's hospital.

HAPPIEST MEMORY:

The birth of both of her daughters.

WORST MEMORY:

The day her home was raided and she was made to watch as her newborn daughter Abigail was murdered in her crib.

BIGGEST SECRET:

In the deepest, darkest part of her, Emmeline wishes she had never gotten into a relationship with Sirius Black and if she had a Time Turner, she'd make that happen no matter how much she still feels intense, complicated love for the man. No matter that she'd always be with him because the pain she still has to endure is sometimes far too much for her.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?:

Emmeline is back in Hampstead, just north of London by her father. She has been recently spotted on Diagon Alley within an Apothecary buying medicinals and looking utterly Muggle.

DIFFERENCE FROM CANON:

Since much isn't known about Emmeline Vance's personality or even the House she was sorted into, I still figure a good much has been changed from what might be JK's head cannon as the Wizarding War never happened and Emmeline has never been murdered as a result so far.

WRITING SAMPLES

FIRST PERSON:

A Work In Progress:

And representing the white race
A man with a monkey for a face
Is flying over in his helicopter
Whistling dixie and playing dumb

In a town that might put a gun to your throat
Or rip the roof right off your place
There's a mold crawling up the walls
And falling asleep in your lungs
And you and I both know how to drink some
We will always have work in this town
Besides the police are stationed at the bridge
And they're preventing passage to higher ground

Why do you keep yourself blind, deaf and numb to what you know is wrong? Say something. Hold others accountable for their actions for that's the only way things will change for the better. Dissonance sets the notes for change.

THIRD PERSON:

It was eleven o'clock. No. It was twenty-three hundred. She had to get into the habit of telling time in that way again... It was twenty-three hundred and the table was a disarray of half penned poems and songs, a half-finished pack of Camels and an empty bottle of vodka tipped on its side having given up on everything. The windows were flung open and a circulating charm was churning the air about her. The smoke from her unfiltered cigarette was being pulled up and set into a dervish before whisked out of the flat. The blue smoke pushed from her lips in a curl toward its doom before she brought the remnants of that defeated bottle to her lips. Drank straight. Finished in one gulp. The red polish on her nails was chipped in places, her fingers spotty from the pen. A floodgate had happened in Emmeline's mind once stepping foot back on English soil. Things she had pretended she had long forgotten or put to rest.

Emmeline flicked her gaze over to the cracked door to her daughter's bedroom. A little foot dangling out from the little bed and the woman's heart contracted with messy emotions. Love, fear, dread, anger. She hated this place but she had to be there for her da. Not after the last time. Not while he was being ravaged with the same thing that took her mother... Emmeline licked her lips and sluggishly brought her head down to let her eyes wander back over her misbegotten memories. That's when there was a knock at the door.

She went quick for her wand resting on her lap and silently knox'ed the lights. Just the eery glow of a waning moon as Emmeline walked cautiously toward her door; heartbeat drumming loudly within her chest, sweat prickling over her, she kept herself to the side of the door with hand to handle and wand pointing at the wood. "Who is it?" An accusatory demand.

PLOT IDEAS:

I want Emmeline a vocal activist within the Wizarding Community. I want her to be openly defiant and pushing for beast rights. I want her to have all the angst with Sirius and to see where that goes. She can also be murdered.
