Phobia “They hide in the light So you can't see their fears” personality abilities + skills history appearance character basics.
personality.
Phobia tends to keep to himself. It's half a side effect of his powers but he also has never been a very outgoing person. He has always been happiest with his books. He dreamt and dreams of being a writer. He tends to watch a situation before joining in. Phobia feels lonely. He misses his family. He still has no idea where his father is. He has a hard time making friends. Something about people don't like their most intimate fears known. Or maybe because he can be an asshole sometimes. If he wants to be left alone, he has no issues drifting into shadows or turning into the person's worst fear to scare them off. abilities + skills.
history.
Before Reid and Andrea met in university. Both were juniors, taking a philosophy course as an elective. They were put together on a group project and agreed over nothing. They argued over everything and when their class ended, both were more than happy to see the backs of the other. Except they ended up enrolled in another elective together. At the beginning, they tried to ignore each other but they were put in another group project and Andrea told everyone in the group, from the get go, that everything Reid said was wrong. Reid responded that Andrea was constantly wrong and we can prove that by what she just said. The group decided they would go out. They met at a bar and, needless to say, very little work was accomplished. It was more like more drinking and by the end of the night, Reid and Andrea hooked up. They were inseparable after that. Both had big dreams. Reid was studying archaeology an proceeded to become a research professor, with a higher focus on research. Andrea also wanted to be a professor. She was a history professor. It seemed luck was on their side when both got a job at the University of Washington. Shortly after starting their new jobs, they wed and shortly after that, Andrea became pregnant with Oliver. Andrea began to work part time so she could have more time raising their child. Reid's career did very well and he was often away from the home for research trips or giving presentations on what he has found. Despite that, Andrea wanted her son to have a very normal childhood. She enrolled him in sports but he wasn't into them. She also signed him up for music lessons. He wasn't bad at piano but what made Oliver happiest was reading. Between two professors, their house was never short on books. He loved being curled up in a chair reading. When he was older, he got into graphic novels. He loved the nights that his dad would be home, making them popcorn, and they would watch the Marvel Superhero movies, starting with X-Men and working through way present day movies. A few weeks before the Event, Reid and Oliver had gotten into a fight. Reid was leaving for a few months. There was a site that he had the option to work. It was a great opportunity and one that Reid did not want to give up. However, he had also signed up Oliver for a summer camp, which Oliver did not want to go to. Reid argued that it would be good for his college applications and good experience in general for Oliver. He didn't think that Oliver should spend the summer doing nothing. Oliver had no plans to do nothing. He had a book he wanted to write. They weren't talking when he left. The Event Oliver was in school when the news broke that the nuclear reactor at Hanford Site had reached meltdown. Whereas Seattle was two hours out from the site, the students were sent home. His mother was waiting for him, with some of these things packed. She wanted to head north. There was nothing being said about them being in the danger zone but the fear was there. They were not the only ones who left Seattle that night. Oliver spent the entire trip, trying to get in touch with his father. He hadn't been able to. They stayed at the hotel for a week before they returned back to Seattle. Everyone questioned what was going on with the meltdown. There were reports of people in the immediate area getting sick. Everyone was watching to see how bad it was. A few months past and there was hope that the worst was behind them. Reid's flight was delayed due to the meltdown and his trip was extended several months. People were getting sick, however; not just in the immediate area. Andrea was one of them. She began to get sick, throwing up. It was around the time that anyone in the area to go for medical treatment. Andrea went in and was diagnosed with acute radiation syndrome. She was put in the hospital but within the week, her symptoms got worse and passed away. Destruction Island Go to Destruction Island. You'll be taken care of. You'll be safe. They will make sure you are taken care of and you will not get ill. You will be safe. Oliver stayed in the hospital after his mother passed. He knew he couldn't stay forever. He knew he couldn't even stay then but where could he go? He couldn't get in touch with his father, no matter how many messages he sent him. His mother was dead. There was no one else to get in touch with. They ran some tests on Oliver and Oliver did not feel ill, it was suggested he go to the island. So Oliver agreed. Life on the island was weird. He was placed in a boarding home with other orphans. He resumed school. It was like the island was supposed to be like Real Life but it wasn't in the least. Students in his class began to show symptoms. They grew wings, could control elements or, one student, turned invisible. It was at that point when Oliver began to show signs as well. At first, it was simply fear detection and everyone was afraid. Then he began to know what people were afraid of. He just knew. He knew these were symptoms of something greater. He couldn't help but wonder if that meant he was going to get sick like his mother. Then instead of just knowing their fears, people became afraid of him. The worst day was when he turned into a gigantic spider during class. He had no idea how he did it and he had no idea how to change back. He heard the teacher call for help. He caught the fear of baby spiders and changed into many of them, running from the classroom. He was finally away from people and he was able to stay himself. Oliver tried to go back to the boarding house and school but he wasn't able to keep his form. He kept changing into what people was afraid of. He has no idea how to return to himself. So he ran. A surprising number of people had fear of darkness and shadows and it became easy for him to become shadows and darkness. No one looked twice at a dark corner. He began to teach himself how to control his powers but tended to allow himself to turn into shadows and darkness around people. It was an easier form to maintain over his human body and one that did not mean he would be shaking out baby spiders from his clothing for hours after. It was a lonely existence. He didn't know how to be around others and even if he could keep himself mostly human looking, with a slight form of shadows and mist, no one wanted to be around someone who they were constantly afraid of. Oliver, at this point, began to call himself Phobia. Phobia was found, eventually. He had been living on the streets, stealing when he could to eat. Sometimes people would take him in, let him crash on their couch but he never stayed long. He would hide in people's homes when it got cold. He thought about sneaking off the island but it was too watched. The woman approached him in the ally. She approached him, offering him food. She brought him back to his home. Trust was slowly earned but she taught him how to control his powers, how to stop himself from losing his form when he was around people and how to use his powers when he wanted to. He did notice people still had this sense of unease around him but he no longer dropped spiders, snakes or bees from his sleeves. She also introduced him to the Faction, where he became an active member. After Phobia had thought the final battle at Destruction Island would have killed him. There had been an explosion but Phobia's life was spared. Others that he had cared about had not been and others had been hurt. They had won and the Island was theirs. Phobia followed his friends to the mainland. There he had discovered there was a sizeable estate waiting for him, left to him by his mother. There was enough funds that Phobia did not need to work. He also discovered just because they had won the Island, it did not mean that those with abilities had won the hearts of everyone. There were still groups of people who did not believe those with abilities were safe. They may not be locked on an island but there was not equality yet. With Remy in the hospital and Zayne by his side, Phobia ended up speaking up on behalf of mutants. It was not a job he wanted but one he would take until another took over. He also began his own blog, detailing the stories of mutants on the island. It began, at first, as stories of those who did not survive but he was approached by others, wanting their story told too. appearnce.
Phobia tends to favour dark colours. He tends to wear jeans and hoodies. He keeps his hair longer. He also has a lot of tattoos, over his arms, chest, his neck and legs. He also has his nose and lip pierced. out of character. Dani • sosocats#7437 (discord) • blackflame28 (cdj) • EST • Ash Stymest (PB)
