Canon point: "The Hole in the Heart" (6x22)

AU: All events match canon but for the following.
Everyone is gender flipped. Not much changes beyond cases being solved a bit quicker and "King of the lab" becoming "Queen of the lab".
Vanessa mirrors Vincent (including his retentive memory, this will get a permission post as a precaution) exactly till events of "The Hole in the Heart". When Broadsky shoots in the attempt to kill Vanessa is shoved by a random lab bystander out of the bullets path. But she is grazed in the shoulder pre being shoved.
The bystander is killed instead of her but for now she won't know that.
She arrives in Hawaii post shove, bleeding from her shoulder but very much alive. She will have to deal with fallout but she will eventually find her footing. The sooner the better too, she still fears a slip into a very not nice mental place.
