positive traits

☝ Friendly

+ Roger will often greet someone with a big smile and a head nod, before offering to buy them a drink (or something along those lines depending on the situation). Spot Roger on the street? Come say hello! A little old witch needs help with her bags? He’ll carry them! Having the worst day ever? Roger will come over with a pint of ice cream and let you cry your heart out. He finds people, both magical and muggle extremely fascinating and enjoys human interaction (and yes, he does phrase it like this) a great deal, though for short amounts of time. He is better at one-on-one or small groups, though he also enjoys observing large groups where he can sit back and remained unnoticed. Roger can be a very lighthearted person with a hint of dark humor and a realistic (some would say pessimistic) nature.

☝ Charming

That smile; those incredibly pale blue eyes; the subtle touches or movement closer to you. Yes, Roger is charming, and damn good at it. With a mind like his, small cues in body language do not go unnoticed and he counters with the proper movement. Not to say he is fake, but he certainly knows how to work a person or situation to his advantage. He is also a very fun person to go pub-hopping with, and is one of the best wing-man you could ask for.

☝ Dedicated

Once given a task he is passionate about Roger will see it through to the end. He will work relentlessly on it until the task is completed to the absolute best of his ability (and if it isn’t he will obsess over it). Roger definitely is not one to ‘half-ass’ anything.

☝ Smart

Roger’s mind never quits. Everything he does and says is well thought out, like a chess player, and he is already reading two moves ahead. Concepts come easily to him, and his schooling came easy (save for Herbology, but he never talks about how badly he failed that course). Tiny details are easily recalled even months later. He loves sharing information and gets excited over concepts, especially math related. It isn't unusual for him drunken ramble on and bore his mates with math.

☝ Tolerant

Coming from a background with a single mother who struggled to make ends meet Roger is very open minded to others and their lives. He literally doesn’t care what gender you prefer, what you identify as, or who you are as long as you’re not a colossal twat. He will support you and your right to be you.

negative traits

☟ Insecure

Roger, on the outside, is exceptionally charismatic with a devil-may-care attitude. He was always astonished at his own popularity at Hogwarts as he preferred his own company. He rationalizes his good luck with women with the explanation that they see him as the ‘perfect accessory’. However, when faced with the task of talking to a girl he actually fancies, Roger becomes nervous and will instead obsess over the possible outcome of the conversation, or analyze the conversation in his head rather than moving forward. He had the most difficult time getting over Cho dumping him, and it is still a very sore subject. Due to her, he has been hesitant to open up and really get to know other girls beyond casual flings. No one ever believes Roger is insecure, rather often told: “You’re the most confident person I know!” Roger is a very complex person who struggles with the duality of this nature.

☟ Emotionally unavailable

Roger is genuinely interested in other people and what they have to say… until they want to know more about him. While he can talk to you for hours about traveling, movies, the state of the magical world and everything in between, Roger is extremely closed off with the exception for his favorite bar-keep. While he likes people and does make an honest effort, Roger is a fair-weather friend.

☟ Escapist

When things get too hard for Roger, he hides away in his flat or takes a long run. His brain never shuts off, always thinking and analyzing, which means he often has a lot of trouble sleeping and is prone to insomnia, which leads to him drinking too much. Push the subject of what is bothering him too much and you will find yourself on the receiving end of a proper chewing out or as one photographer discovered: a camera hexed to your face.

☟ Insomniac

Often times Roger find himself unable to sleep. On these nights he might stay up to read or do various other tasks, but more often than not he will end up in a pub drinking away whatever keeps him awake at night.

☟ Creature of habit

Roger craves routine, which makes him prone to anxiety. Sometimes the slightest thing can set him off, especially when his routine is changed abruptly. It could be something as simple as waking up later than planned to an unscheduled interview. He combats this by going to extreme lengths ensuring his daily routine is not thrown off; and when it is a nice potion or muggle pill helps to calm him down.

neither here nor there

☞ Private

Roger is an intensely private person and gets upset when his personal life is commented on. Because of this he lives a relatively low-profile life in Muggle London and does his best to not draw too much attention to himself when in the magical world (though it doesn’t always work).

☞ Studious

Roger loves to read and observe. He can absorb information quickly and is very good at applying it. He is often seen at other matches taking notes and using them to draw up new team plays for use.

☞ Realistic

Roger does his best to look at a situation objectively and make the most logical decision possible. This trait gives Roger a realistic approach to life (though some would say he is a bit pessimistic).

history
Timeline:

(07 / 1986) – Joined youth Quidditch team: For the first five years of his life Roger’s health was very fragile to the point his mother often kept him inside for fear he might have to go to the hospital again. After much begging and pleading on his part Verity allowed Roger to join a youth Quidditch league mostly out of guilt that she was never home due to working so much. Roger was a natural at the game and loved it almost as much as he loved reading.

(10 / 1990) – Second Year at Hogwarts: His first year was an awkward time; not too many friends and unsure of where he fit into the scheme of things. The second year was much better with Roger joining the Quidditch team and gaining more confidence as well as friends.

(01/ 1996) – Cho and Cedric begin dating: Cho was the envy of many girls in school, always seen with Cedric and Roger. The trio couldn’t have been more popular or closer until Cho and Cedric began dating. Roger, devastated, withdrew from his two closest friends and instead focused more on Quidditch. He dated many girls after Fleur and while he tried to maintain friends with Cho and Cedric the damage was done.

(05 /1996) – Quidditch Offer: Roger’s true love has always been maths and physics but as his time at Hogwarts came to an end the Kenmare Kestrals made him a tempting offer. He was torn: Quidditch would be the sure path to financial security as well as the chance to really impress Cho. He took the offer which quickly transformed into a career that was able to marry his natural maths and athletic abilities.

(05 /1998) – The War: Roger didn’t partake in the battle of Hogwarts due to being away at a foreign friendly match. He returned as soon as he could to help with the rebuilding process. During this time he saw the death of many friends and destruction of the place that felt most like home.

(03/2000) – Trade to Pride of Portree: This would be the turning point in Roger’s career. Having spent the last three years with Kenmare (two of them as a reserve) the offer from the Prides to be their starting Chaser catapulted Roger into true Quidditch stardom. He was now being recognized for his talents and would eventually be compared to the likes of Oliver Wood and Aidan Lynch.

(05/2005) Named a favorite for the British Team for 2006 World Cup – Roger, who at this point has become a very popular and noted player, was announced as a ‘serious contender’ for the Chaser position. He would not win this bid after receiving negative press for hexing an aggressive photographer’s camera to his face during an interview gone awry.

baggage
baggage

  • Lack of father: Verity never really spoke about Roger’s father; she wasn’t angry with him, but simply refused to terminate the pregnancy for the sake of his career. While she did her best as a struggling single mother Roger lacked a proper father figure growing up. As a kid and early teen this didn’t bother him as much, but as he grew older the curiosity as to who his father was and why he had no role in his life began to bother Roger.

  • Overworked single mother: Roger’s mother did all that she could to provide for her son. Barely out of Hogwarts when she discovered she was pregnant with a young muggle footballer’s child she refused to ‘get rid of it’ and set off to be the best mother she could. Verity barely made ends meet as it was, and with Roger’s constant illnesses she was stretched thin. Roger feels guilt over these things even though he’s been able to repay his mother and provide her with a comfortable life.

  • Treatment of Luna Lovegood: Roger was part of the very popular crowd at Hogwarts and oftentimes caught up in the group mentality of his peers. Luna Lovegood was someone his peers did not like. He would tease her, orchestrate other students to harass and take her things all for his and his ‘friends’ enjoyment. Still, Luna was nothing but kind to him and everyone she met. Roger hated the weird girl for the courage to be herself when he rarely understood who he even was.

  • Unrequited love of Cho: The one who got away. The unrequited love. The object of obsession. Everything Roger has done since Cedric and Cho began dating has been to impress her. Every decision, every act has been in the hopes he would finally be enough to win against the ghost of Cedric. It is unclear if he really loves Cho or simply loves the idea of the girl he knew at school, but he has ruined perfectly good relationships because the woman in question can’t live up to Cho.

  • The war: Roger feels guilty he wasn’t at Hogwarts to defend his home against the evil forces of the Dark Lord. He only arrived the day after and witnessed the castle in ruins and the lifeless bodies of countless friends and familiar faces. He feels removed from the situation and equally useless at the same time.

  • Not studying physics: Roger understands math; it really is the only thing that makes complete sense to him. He’d always intended to go to a muggle university, study physics and apply what he knew to help with the war… but the offer of financial stability and chance to impress Cho from Quidditch was too much to pass on. Now he obsessively reads peer-reviewed muggle journals and goes on drunken rants about math when prompted.

    rewards

  • Wand

  • Quidditch Play Book – Roger loves to draw up new plays in his playbook. He opens to one day be a captain of a team and has drawn up hundreds of plays in his book; it has many notes and keen insights into the other team’s movements.

  • Kneazles – Jack and Meg are, for all he is concerned, his children. Roger dotes on the two felines and they truly do live the pampered life while providing him much needed companionship and a way to destress.

  • Clove cigarettes – Yes he knows he should quit but there is nothing better than the way a cigarette tastes after a long day of training. It gives him something to occupy his hands and mind during stressful situations.

  • Pen and paper – For writing out whatever is on his mind when it feels too full. Usually math equations (especially when drunk).

  • ‘A Brief History of Time’- His favorite book read.

  • Quaffle – The familiar feel of the ball and tossing it makes him so happy.

  • What was the last lie you told?
Hmm, probably last week? The team dietician suspected I have strayed off the diet again (I have. Shh).

  • What do you think about the most: the past, the present or the future? Why?
As much as I don’t want to admit it: the past. I believe time is simultaneous so everything that has happened and will happen is occurring at once and yet I can’t seem to pull my mind out of the past. It seemed like life at Hogwarts was so perfectly uncomplicated, though it seemed very difficult at the time.

  • How do you feel about socks?
They’re great but prone to being stinky.

  • Would you rather be gossiped about or never talked about?
I’m torn. Obviously I need to be talked about if I want to advance my career but I could really do without the gossip of my life. I’m a bloke who rides a broom for a living; my personal life isn’t that important.

  • If you were the opposite sex for a day, what would you look like and what would you do?
Obviously me with boobs, right? Maybe longer hair. I think I might be pretty. As for what I would do… isn’t that obvious?

    Thread:
Chocolate shop or bookstore… Chocolate shop or bookstore. Roger's mind weighed between the two options while he raised his bag free hand to scratch absent-mindedly at a spot on his cheek. The last two weeks had been just… difficult. Laying low at home in Manchester and avoiding the magical world as much as possible had done some good, though tension still built up uncomfortably at the base of his skull more often than he wanted to admit. His hand dropped with a tired jerk, slipping into the pocket of his jeans. A cigarette would be the perfect thing right now. Roger retrieved the small rectangular package containing the clove cigarettes, placed it between his lips and exchanged the pack in his pocket for a small matchbook with two matches. The first match burnt out in the wind before he could light the cigarette. He inhaled the phosphorous smell; it scraped his throat, and stung his nose. The second match almost broke in half from the ferocity he struck it with.
He gave a huff as if with that, he could blow his thoughts too and then tossed the unlit cigarette to the ground. Oh well, I really shouldn’t smoke anyway. Pinching the bridge his nose, he glared in the distance. What the hell is your problem, Davies? In fact, he knew the answer. The problem was contained in last week’s Witch Weekly but he couldn't be more specific about the nature of the problem for the life of him. Not beyond the utter annoyance it evoked when he caught himself doubting his own efforts, always doubting. He simply couldn't recognize the continuous nagging feeling in his stomach. He hadn’t realized how long he’d been standing there until he gave a start at the sudden voice behind him.
“Oh, sorry about that,” he said, giving a grin and turning around to look at the owner of the voice. Suddenly, Roger’s grin faded, and his pale blue eyes widened. “…Cho?”
The world seemed to quiet into low humming and even the sky faded a bit from blue-silver to an uninteresting grey. It was a horrible shock to his system, the discovery of Cho standing before him, looking as devastatingly perfect, and rendering him motionless. Roger’s whole being seemed to quiver as his heart drummed with irregular, heavy beats, so heavy like it'd turned into stone and jostled around uncontrollably. The surprise remained on his face for only a ghost of a second and Roger hitched the boyishly charming grin back onto his face as though nothing were wrong. “Hey, Cho…” His voice was calm and casual with warmth, as though he were greeting an old friend with a less complicated history than the two shared. His hand rose to brush through the dark tendrils of his hair, a classic sign of nervousness that betrayed his otherwise cool exterior.
