History:

• Harry loved life while he was still an adorable naive child. He thought it was wicked cool that his parents were war heroes, and his little baby self survived those times, and believed they were a happy family. As he grew older and saw signs of his dad pulling away, he started to doubt that and it scared him.

• He took to adventuring on his own at a young age. He became comfortable with Flooing on his own around the age of eight (whether his parents liked it or not), and would take off to Diagon Alley for Florean’s and to people watch. He was typically caught by a family friend and escorted home. Didn’t stop him from trying again.

• His mum enjoyed using him as bait for her Muggle Studies lessons. Harry didn’t really know what to make of the Muggle world, but his mum didn’t want him that clueless. As a result, she took him on a number of Muggle outings and even occasionally made him endure an evening with his cousin Dudley. Awkwardness was had by all, but in the end, he could communicate with Muggles properly, which he supposed was the idea.

• Harry knew of the Weasleys before getting on the train, of course, but he didn’t really know any. Oh, on his adventures to Florean’s he’d seen the sea of red from a distance, even spotted one that looked like his age, but they were such a large pack, and so full of red hair, that Harry found them intimidating. It wasn’t until he ended up in a train compartment with Ron that Harry realised this bloke was best friend material. In fact, they hit it right off.

• Harry was sorted into Gryffindor wickedly fast by the sorting hat He's not sure if it was the fastest sort ever, but he likes to think it was.

• Being the youngest seeker in a century is not good for the ego. In fact, Harry was not liked by his fellow teammates much at all; he took his Quidditch too seriously (because it was the most important thing he shared with his dad). He’s turned the tables since becoming Quidditch Captain, though. The Gryffindor team is a well-oiled drum, and he leads with fun and excitement. He feels most at home on the pitch.

• Getting more curious about girls, Harry decided to attempt to date a couple. Cho Chang was a pretty sight, but liked to cry. Harry couldn’t handle cries. He had interest in Ginny Weasley last year, but they both realised it was simply proximity to each other and nothing to do with any real feelings. At least, that’s what Harry said, and he assumes Ginny feels the same way. Maybe. Possibly? Not like he's about to ask her. In reality, Harry probably has no idea what he actually feels, and he refuses to hurt anyone the same way his dad hurt him. That means not getting serious. Ever.

• Harry used to keep the collection of trinkets his dad brought him on his nightstand in the dorm. However, an extended absence this summer made him angry upon his return to Hogwarts, and he chucked them all out the window of Gryffindor Tower. He’s found pieces of them on the lawns since then. He told himself he’d throw them away, but he actually keeps the shattered pieces in a small box in his trunk.

Canon Differences:

HE IS NOT THE CHOSEN ONE.

But in all seriousness, that is a major change for Harry. The Harry we meet in canon was a boy who was mesmerized by this magical world he belonged to, with a penchant for trouble but an overriding sense of humility derived from being an orphan. When he come into his own as a 17-year-old, he embraces that no one else can defeat Voldemort, and he embraces it so fully that he’s willing to sacrifice his life for it.

This Harry? He’s none of those things.

Harry knows a world that isn’t perfect, but hey, the war was won! His parents are alive, and they are war heroes. That’s pretty wicked. As a child, all he saw was a loving family, immune to the darkness that was driving his father away and making his mother sad. As his father drew so far away that he started traveling, though, Harry’s intense love of life rechanneled into resentment. And Harry, seeing much of himself in his dad, fears that he could turn out the same way. He doesn’t want to run that risk. It’s made him bitter, shy of commitment, and very much not inclined to think about serious adult-type matters.

He does still have round glasses nearly identical to the ones his dad has worn. However, he doesn't wear all the time, especially now; now that he looks so much like his dad, he's not too fond of the resemblance. He is very fond of the Muggle invention of contacts, and he wears them more than he wears his glasses.

Harry also does not talk to snakes, say the name Voldemort out loud, brush with death annually, or believe in prophecies of any kind.

SAMPLES

First Person: Answer one of the following questions in character. This is a first person writing sample. 200 words minimum.

• Empty your pockets or your handbag. What's inside and why?

If I were to empty out my pockets right now, I would find: a snitch, a crumbled chocolate frog box, a dove feather, a broken piece of quill, the Marauders’ Map, a handwritten quidditch scorecard, and an assortment of Honeydukes and Weasley candies.

The snitch is in my pocket because the snitch is always in my pocket. It was the snitch I caught in my first Quidditch match at Hogwarts, and I’ve decided that it brings me good luck. Ron thinks I’m mental. The crumbled chocolate frog wrapper and the broken piece of quill go to show that I find rubbish bins hard to come by. Everyone has things to throw away, but I never seem to be able to find one. But when I am around one, I forget those are in my pocket. I ate that chocolate frog last week and chewed the end off my quill yesterday. The dove feather amuses me. The first time I conjured a dove, it flew off immediately, squawking at me, but left a feather behind. I stuck it in my vest pocket and I’ve never taken it out. Don’t worry, I wash it; the feather has fared well. The Marauders’ Map is rarely not on my person because, well, why would anyone leave something that valuable out where someone could get to it. Even though I’ve worked hard to keep it a secret, its existence is talked about; it must be guarded. Finally, the candy. Because sometimes, you just need candy.

Third Person: Please provide two links to third person writing samples. If you have one for this character, that is preferable. (Linked samples are not required for players already in game.)

• ONE (as James Potter)
• TWO (as Sirius Black)
