"Aww that's damn generous of you, Maggie," Howard said with a grin. Though tempted, he didn't spare a glance over his shoulder to let him know that he was strapped down before taking the nose up another ten degrees. Based on what he could surmise in the darkness, their enemies were fighter planes -- heavily armed, but not designed for high altitudes. They had a bomber plane, and thus the advantage.
"Hold on," he cried, swerving quickly to avoid enemy fire. There was a terrific crash as they were clipped by some bullets, but nothing (yet) seemed too broken. Just a few hundred more feet, he thought, gritting his teeth.
Up and up they climbed, Howard's breath deepening. One more missile brushed by, landing a little more squarely this time and rattling the cockpit. Howard grimaced, but all the important levels held steady. Well. Steadyish.
As the drone planes faded behind them, he let out a long breath. "I think we're okay," he said. "For now." Only now did he turn a little to flash her a smile. "But you know I"d never let a lady pay for dinner."
