The raised voice caught his attention and he poked his head out of the kitchen. "The easiest way is scent. But in some cases -- if you meet your mate before they've presented, they don't smell the same." Like it had been with he and Stiles.
"A couple days before he presented, his scent changed, and I knew then. And in a case like that," he rolled his shoulders. "You start spending more time together. Not -- not necessarily sexual time either. Stiles and I didn't until after he presented." It seemed important to let Scott know that.
"But the scent -- the scent is important. Your mate isn't going to smell just good, it's going to be something deeply personal to you, and you're going to smell of something deeply personal to them. Like, Stiles. What does Stiles smell like to you?"
"Something sweet. Like a bakery, but with less bread smell--" Scott answered. "He smells less than he did a couple days ago though. It's muted now--"
"That's because he's claimed. To me he smells like--" And he couldn't resist a deep inhale, because even across the room his mate smelled damn good. "Like these cookies my mom used to make around Christmas, sugar cookies and snickerdoodles, but these ones have been left right by the window, cause it's fall, and she made a treat for us --"
He stopped, the tops of his cheeks turning a little pink because it was deeply personal and the girls at the school weren't entirely wrong when they suggested Stiles roofied him with his scent. But it was more happy than sexual and Derek wouldn't change it for the world. He cleared his throat.
"It doesn't -- it doesn't compel you to have sex or anything, but it's definitely a scent that makes you happy and that makes you want to shift and roll around in it."
