Janet was born in Cresskill, New Jersey to world-renowned scientist Vernon Van Dyne and his wife Hillary. The couple had met in college, but they’d waited quite a while after marrying before having any children. When Hillary finally become pregnant, the two were overjoyed, but their lives went on like they always had. Vernon worked, and Hillary was always hosting or attending some charity function. The family was happy until Janet was three. Hillary died in a car accident. In the matter of a day, their family became just Janet and Vernon. Janet was so young that she remembers nothing of her mother. By the time Janet was school aged just she and her father in their large house seemed normal. Father and daughter were close even if it was apparent early on that their priorities were different. Fancy private schools did nothing to help Janet reach her full potential or lengthen her attention span. In fact the only classes that she excelled in were the more creative ones. She was an extremely bright child, but her mind was always on other things, and this is a habit that would follow her through high school. Her grades while good enough These were things she felt were infinitely more entertaining. Art, friends, boys. She had money. She was flighty. And holy crap she had entitlement issues. After high school, Janet was a bit directionless however. She dabbled in college in New York City (making the best grades in more creative classes) and lived there, but mostly she lived it up. Exclusive clubs were open to her, she met celebrities, went to some premiers. She went to quite a few events on the arm of famous, attractive men, and while lauded on E! for her fashion sense she was kind of famous for simply being famous. Her behavior was never crazy, but she had a reputation for having a good time. Fortunately for Janet (and Vernon’s sanity), she did begin to get bored. Still not knowing what to do the decision was made for her. A friend snatched her sketchbook and showed it to a woman she knew at a design school. Janet had her in, and she excelled there. Unfortunately, Vernon died before he could really see her pull her act together. The time after her father’s death was incredibly stressful. While he left everything to her, getting all the affairs in order was stressful. She left his company in the care of the board, which had been lifelong friends of her father, and she kept on his financial adviser. He was a man that had grown up with her father, and apparently had been asked to keep an eye on her if anything ever happened to her father. He did a good job at it too. He was annoying, sure and tried to do too much, but he did look out for her. During a meeting he tried to advise her on cutting funding to some scientist in New Jersey her father had been sending money too. On finding out that it was Dr. Henry Pym (who had been her father assistant at one point and her father was a bit fond of) she refused. But her adviser at least talked her into going too see the operation to make a better decision. No doubt he thought Janet would come to the same conclusion as he had. It had the opposite effect. Hank was a bit excited that someone was showing an interest, and she could recognize genius (even in a hyper, unfunded form). Feeling as though she might have seriously freaked him out about cutting funding, she showed up two days later with pizza. This was the start of a strange sort of friendship, (Mainly he couldn't get rid of her after. She sort of nagged at him to show her everything whenever he was around, even if he didn't seem to find overmuch.) which ended up with her as the Wasp, them dating, and having a couple adventures of their own. |
