Hugo Weasley is a bundle of energy wrapped up in a cape of nerdery. Both of Ron and Hermione's children have their own very distinct personalities that do a credit to the Weasley household, and always make things interesting for their parents. From the moment he was born, Hugo never really understood the concept of "holding still." He is full of life and energy and is constantly amused and amazed with the world around him. His enthusiasm, coupled with a natural curiosity (inherited and nurtured by his mother), means that Hugo is always ready for an adventure. Not just for the fun (and possible danger), but also for the chance to see and experience new things, and to learn from them.
Hugo has a vivid imagination and flair for the creative and outlandish. When they were younger, he and Rose would often get wrapped up playing in imaginary worlds of their own creation. That did not leave him as the years went on. To this day he will still launch into a rousing game of "The Floor is Lava," randomly burst into song with lyrics of his own creation, and devise a multitude of hilarious and over the top pranks. Some even at his own expense. Because Hugo believes that the ability to have fun and a good sense of humor are two of the most important traits to have.
Hugo is incredibly friendly and personable. He's extroverted and loves talking to new people. He's the type of kid who has no problem striking up a conversation with someone and genuinely likes hearing about how things are going for them. He is of the opinion that one can never have too many friends. He does, however, tend to get a bit tripped up around pretty girls. Under the tutelage of his cousin, Fred, Hugo has attempted to master the elusive art of "game," but has not yet been successful. He's loud, and energetic, and ridiculous, and that can be a bit much for girls to take on right away. Playing it cool isn't really in his vocabulary. Which can get him down from time to time, for with as ridiculous as he is, Hugo is a romantic at heart, and loves the idea of having a girlfriend. He just needs to find his dream nerd girl first.
Because yes, nerdery is very much a part of Hugo. He learned a love of Muggle culture from a young age. Hermione often whisked her children off for trips to visit their muggle grandparents, and Hugo adored them every bit as much as the Weasley clan. And within the muggle world, Hugo was exposed to a treasure trove of geekdom. Comics, television, movies, and video games. He is a particular fan of Star Wars and has spent more Halloweens than he can count dressed up as Luke Skywalker.
But Hugo isn't all laughs and pranks. He does have his darker traits. He is a teenager, after all. While he generally likes to keep things happy, he can be rather moody. It was not an uncommon occurrence to find Hugo sulking under the table when he was upset in his younger years. He is incredibly loud and doesn't have a great concept of boundaries, which can be difficult for a lot of people to handle. While he is incredibly intelligent, he also gets distracted easily and has trouble staying focused on certain things. He also has the age old Gryffindor trait of impulsiveness. Thinking ahead is not one of Hugo's strengths. For that, he usually relies on his sister.
Which brings us to Rose. Because you cannot discuss Hugo without Rose. The siblings have an incredible bond and one doesn't quite work without the other. Co-dependent is definitely an accurate word for it. However, it isn't necessarily a bad thing. They bring out the best in one another. Rose has the ability to calm and focus her baby brother, and ease his worries in a way that no one else can. And Hugo will always be his big sister's number one supporter. To him, there isn't anything that Rose can't do. And he makes certain that she remembers to enjoy her life along with all of her ambitions. They balance each other and look after each other. Rose is Hugo's rock and he is hers. Never are they as strong as when they're together.
Two years after the birth of their daughter, Ron and Hermione welcomed a son into their family. They named him Hugo after his maternal grandfather, and christened him with the middle name of Arthur after his father's father. From the moment he was born he was quite a handful. Ron and Hermione lucked out with their first child being easy and content, but lighting definitely did not strike the Weasley household twice. He was loud and constantly demanded attention. This stayed the case as he grew from infant to toddler, toddler to child, and child to teenager. Hugo has always been hyperactive with a great fondness for getting into trouble. And he certainly had no trouble giving his parents a large portion of their gray hairs.
Right out of the gate, Hugo formed a close bond with his big sister, Rose. He was hers, and she was his. For as long as he can remember, it had always been Rose that curled up on his bed with him in the evenings to read him bedtime stories, or to weave her own. Imaginative tales that usually featured a ginger haired pair of siblings going on grand adventures together. It was Rose who checked his closet and under his bed for monsters, and her bed he would run to when the Things In The Dark frightened him too badly. It was not an uncommon sight for Ron and Hermione to find their son curled up with Rose in her bed in the mornings. When they grew slightly older, Rose and Hugo discovered a small cave in the woods out beyond their childhood home. Inspired by a mutual love of Peter Pan, the two adopted it as their special hideout. They would sneak off together with snacks and books and hide away from the world there for hours; playing, laughing, and creating their own little world.
Hugo had a particularly difficult time adjusting to the fact that his sister would be going away to Hogwarts without him, thereby separating the two of them for the first time in their lives. He acted out a lot that year, and counted the days until he'd see his sister again for the holidays. But as the time for him to join him grew nearer, his behavior began to improve again. Rose had told him all about Hogwarts, weaving stories for him, just as she had once told him bedtime tales. It all seemed exciting, and Hugo couldn't wait to see it all for himself.
His arrival at the school was punctuated by his placement into Gryffindor house, along with many of his other family members. Having such a large family already in place in the school (not to mention the best big sister), meant that Hugo was largely undaunted by his new experience. There were a few nerves, of course, but generally he was ready to see what new adventures awaited him in his first time away from home. And there were plenty of those. His days at Hogwarts are some of Hugo's fondest memories. Though he is and was exceedingly clever, Hugo's desire to entertain his classmates often seemed more important than paying attention in class. He played up the role as class clown, and got into trouble many times over the years for goofing off during his lessons. He was always careful not to let his grades slip, however, because would you want to face telling Hermione Granger that you got bad marks? Hugo certainly did not. Whenever he felt himself teetering too close to the edge, he would buckle down and Rose would help him focus on improving his skills. The most trouble he faced was in his third year when he tried out for and earned a spot on the house Quidditch team as a Beater. He became far too focused on the game and the Howler he received from his mother threatening to pull him from the team was more than enough to help him learn to better balance his attention between sports and studies.
He turned 18 just one week before graduating from Hogwarts and began the next chapter in his life. Rose, having previously graduated and taken on a position in the Ministry, was living in a flat in the city, and the siblings had already made plans for Hugo to join her. He moved into the spare bedroom immediately after graduation and that tiny flat became the Slightly-More-Grownup version of Rose and Hugo's childhood cave. Evenings and weekends were spent with Rose, friends, and local-living cousins, with Hugo always encouraging the good times. While his work-days were spent helping his Uncle George and Aunt Ange at Weasley's Wizard Wheezes. With his prankster nature, the idea of working in a joke shop appealed to Hugo, as did the notion of WWW being run by family. He's nothing more than a shop-boy at this point, assisting customers and ringing up purchases, but his extroverted and friendly nature means that his customers almost always leave with a smile on their face. And his willingness to let his Aunt and Uncle test out their new products on him provides him with many funny anecdotes to tell the customers about the items and their effects.
Hugo doesn't know that he'll work in the joke shop forever, but at the moment he's 18 and having the time of his life there. He's got his friends, his sister, his family, and not much too worry about. Life is good.
