Other/general description: Deeks is a laid back kind of guy, he prefers wearing jeans whenever he can and certainly lives up to a kind of California ideal (at least when it comes to the looks), right down to the surfing. He keeps his hair a bit long, and almost always is in need of a shave - he's been described as rugged. He prefers jeans and shirts to anything stuffier, and is almost always wearing some sort of grin on his face. At heart Deeks is a fun sort of guy and when he's not working he wears his emotions on his sleeve.
Family
Spouse/partner: Random bed partners but usual nothing serious Children: N/A Parents: Nathan and Susan Deeks Sibling(s): N/A Other: Deeks took the loss of his partner, Jess Traynor, very hard when she was killed while he was working on an undercover mission. It was especially hard being made to think that Traynor had betrayed him, giving away his cover, before he realized it was Scali who was the dirty cop. Still this instance, combined with his past, makes it difficult for Deeks to trust as easily as he should.
Deeks maintains a friendship with Michael Heath, a friend from his police academy days.

Relevant backstory: Deeks lived a pretty normal childhood, he had a pretty decent relationship with his parents, until his mom split when he was eleven. It was a shock to him, and his father as well (which was especially hard since Deeks was so used to his father knowing how to handle everything), but they adjusted - or did what they could to keep on living a normal life after she left. His father kept himself busy with work almost constantly, leaving Deeks on his own most of the time.
As he grew through his teenage years, Deeks adopted a sort of surfer attitude about life. He was very into it throughout High school, coasting through his classes, though he still was able to maintain decent grades. He just didn't care about school, he wanted to spend his time hanging out with his friends, getting high, and generally being a pain in the ass when his dad wasn't working.
When he graduated, Deeks picked up odd jobs around town, but he didn't really have a clue what he wanted to do with himself. He was still living the surfer kind of life, hanging out at the beach when he wasn't flipping burgers, or working on car engines, or tearing tickets at the theater. One day his dad told him if he didn't get his act together he'd spend the rest of his life trapped there. It was a wake up call, perhaps not one that lead to him leaving LA and making his mark out in the world, but Deeks realized that he didn't want to end up doing stupid jobs for the rest of his life. So he pooled together his savings and applied to UCLA.
College was interesting for Deeks - he still held on to the slacker attitude he'd spent his teenage years perfecting, and college offered him the chance for him to try out a lot of different things, he took classes during the summers getting a taste of everything he could. It was during his senior year that he finally picked a major. He had enough credits in several different majors that he only needed a few more classes for each, but settled on Forensic Science. Though after he graduated Deeks still didn't know what he wanted to do with himself, so he applied to Law School on a whim and was accepted to the UCLA Law School. He finished in three years with his law degree and even did a short stint as a lawyer, though after only a few months though, Deeks realized that his heart wasn't really in it - so he joined the Police Academy, figuring he needed a drastic change of direction to help him figure things out.
Thanks to the years Deeks spent going to classes full time, and working odd jobs to put himself through school, Deeks didn't seem much of his father - who was also keeping himself busy with work. They saw each other on holidays when they had to make time for each other, though these holiday gatherings were always tense. Deeks found it harder to talk to his father as he continually didn't have an answer for him about what he was doing with his life, and his father was constnatly pressuring him for an answer - waiting for the day when Deeks would tell him he had a plan for his life. At Thanksgiving in 2004 everything fell apart though, Deeks had just finished his first year as a LAPD officer and was finally feeling like he had found what he wanted to do with himself - but it wasn't enough for his father, who had expected Deeks to have some kind of job that took him out of LA, that made him do something more with his life. The dinner quickly desolved into a shouting match, that ended with Deeks' father telling him he hated him as he walked out the door.
He hasn't seen his father since, but keeps track of him. And since his father moved to Iowa, Deeks hasn't ever felt the desire to go out there and talk to him again.
When he first joined the Police Academy Deeks met Michael Heath, another cadette in training with him and the two became fast friends. They fell into a bit of a romance, but Deeks called an end to it when another in their class was killed - he didn't feel like he could deal with that. Which has lead to his rule about no serious relationships, though he and Michael have remained close friends, Michael is still his emergency contact.
Deeks was involved with a few high profile crimes during his time as a LAPD police officer, and that helped him when he put in his request for promotion to Detective. After his promotion, Deeks started working a lot of undercover jobs after it was clear that he excelled in this type of thing, though as he gained acclaim for his career he hurt many of his relationships with city cops along the way, earning himself a bad reputation with most LAPD officers. Deeks had always considered the damage done part of the job.
It was on one of his longer undercover jobs that Deeks first met the NCIS team, he'd been working to try and uncover a drug ring working out of a local gym, when Sam Hanna came in and took his in. It eventually became known that the two were working undercover, and they ended up working together, though a bit unwillingly in some cases, until they solved the case. It was this case that lead to Hetty approaching Deeks to offer him a position as the LAPD Liaison to NCIS: OSP, and it was with some hesitancy that Deeks accepted the position. Deeks stuck around long enough to help the NCIS team solve another case before all the pieces fell into place for a long term deep undercover op he'd been trying to work out for years, and so when the opportunity arose he took it.
However, things went bad in the middle of the operation, and his partner, Jess Traynor, lost contact with Deeks, pulling the NCIS onto the case. Traynor was killed in a car bombing after having made contact with NCIS. Deeks made contact with Hetty later that same day, explaining the situation and asking for her help to continue with the operation, knowing LAPD would shut it down if they knew Deeks was still alive.
Deeks went back in attempting to continue the mission only to learn he had been sold out by a dirty cop - his partner (or so he thought). Callen, Hanna, and Kensi came in to save Deeks from his impending death, and Deeks went on to uncover that it was not his partner who was being paid off, but it was another officer Frank Scali. The entire operation hit Deeks hard, and he was reminded again why he always keeps things light and very far away from serious, and it has made it difficult for him to really trust Kensi the way he needs to for their new partnership to work.
Since then Deeks has worked hand in hand with the NCIS: OSP team, assisting and occasionally liaising when necessary, though thanks to his reputation, the LAPD are often less than happy to work with him. Though he manages as best he can - liaising or not.
