Character Info Fandom: OC Name: Michael 'Buck' Clutterbuck Age/Birthday: 34 / 8th April 1981 Species: Human Sexuality: Straight Personality: At first meeting, Buck can come across as serious, unnerving and an imposing figure. He can be when he wants and needs to but for the most part he is calm, thoughtful and somebody you know you can count on.
Like his sister, he does have a temper but has a lot more control over it. He doesn’t usually raise his voice, opting to voice his anger in even, low tones with a hard glint to his blue eyes. He does know how to have fun and relax when he gets the chance but as leader of a large, hard working tribe like the Oma, he rarely gets the chance to of late.
As leader of the Oma, Buck likes to think of himself as fair and open but tough if he needs to be. From the very start, when the tribe was formed, he made it clear that he would not (and indeed doesn’t) rule with an iron fist. He is very approachable and welcomes input from all. He is open to new people joining or staying in their territory temporarily and as long as they do not cause friction or bring trouble into the tribe and are willing to pitch in here and there, he doesn’t mind what they do.
Skills and Training: Buck finished high school and finished well but he never went on to further education, that wasn’t for him. He was always more comfortable working with his hands than at a desk or computers. He liked the outdoors and the thought of an indoor job like office work (even though he would probably be ok at it) bored him. He helped out with the family horses right up until he moved state, learning to ride from an early age. Ranch work was what he liked, having helped out with he was younger and ended up with his own ranch once he established his life in Cascade Locks.
Strengths and weaknesses:
Strengths: - Hard Working - Since he was young, Buck has worked hard at everything - school, his family, his marriage, on his ranch after moving to Cascade Locks and, now, for the Oma tribe’s livelihood. - Dependable and Approachable - If family, friends, other Oma or even a drifter, is in need Buck will do his best to offer them some form of support and help. He is also very approachable and open to ideas and advice. - Protective - Buck’s first thoughts are never for himself and it has been that way pretty much since his mother died. As the oldest of the family, he looked after his younger siblings (especially Liza) while his father was busy and started on the Barbies. That protective streak continued when he got married and had a family of his own and still continues today with the members of his tribe. - Planning/Quick thinking - Buck has always been good at forward thinking. He likes to have an idea on what to do, how to do it and what is needed to achieve it. When it came to forming the Oma he quickly made up his mind what was needed and formulated the plans - this included sending a few people to ransack the supermarket and other places for any fruit and veg (no matter the condition) that they could gather to start the planting of various crops.
Weaknesses: - Stubborn - While he is open to ideas and advice, Buck can have his stubborn streaks, especially when the Chets are involved. Sometimes he will know that he’s in the wrong but will be too damn stubborn to back down, even after admitting it to others. - Overprotective - Being protective may be one of Buck’s strengths but sometimes he can go a bit too far and end up being overprotective, especially when his sister is involved. - Insomniac/restless - Buck hates to be cooped up inside for too long, not only that but he struggles to wind down enough to actually sleep. His mind always thinking of what needs to be done and how and worrying about the Chet and various others things that could come their way. - Grumpiness - Due to his restlessness and the stress of making sure everyone in the tribe is well, Buck can have bouts of grumpiness from time to time, snapping when overly tired or being too stubborn to see reason. Usually these bouts don’t last that long and he will more often than not attempt to make amends.

History: First born of George and Claire Clutterbuck, Michael helped his parents out as best he could from a young age, especially his mother with his father busy with work most of the time.
When he was seventeen, the happy family life would mostly come to an end. Their mother began to suffer almost constant headaches and had to be treated for high blood pressure. For a while they thought it was under control and Michael tried to take on more of the work around the house to make sure she stayed mostly stress-free. However, just a few weeks later, Claire had a stroke due to an aneurysm and was pronounced dead on arrival to the hospital.
The family was fractured with the death of their mother, their rock, the person who kept everything going and who the children spent most of their time with. It was Michael who took over looking after his younger siblings, although at thirteen, Jeremiah helped out as best he could. Their mother’s death hit them hard but they didn’t have long to grieve for not even a year later, their father brought home the first ‘Barbie’ - a term coined by his brother David for their step mother, Barbara, the first in a long line.. This would lead to the first big argument between Michael and his father, angry at George for marrying so soon and marrying a gold-digging patient.
With each new wife and step-mother, Michael’s anger and disappointment in his father grew. The man wouldn’t see sense, that he didn’t need to find someone to ‘raise’ his kids, that they were more than capable of taking care of themselves. Michael wouldn’t have minded if at least one of the Barbies had been someone that his father loved and who loved him in return, someone who he could start again with, be happy with. But it never was. Just yet another woman to spend his father’s money.
Michael met his own wife, Charlotte, when he was eighteen. They fell for each other and were engaged the next year and he moved out of the house to live with her - although he still stopped by regularly to check on everyone and he still helped to look after the horses - with the wedding six months later.
When he was twenty his daughter, Claire (named after his mother) was born. Michael loved being a father and with Charlotte working a 9-5 office job, he was more responsible for his daughter’s well being and his son’s when Tom was born two years later.
Not long after Tom was born, Charlotte started talking about promotions and the possibility of moving North for better work opportunities and a couple of years later they came to the decision to move to Oregon, after she landed a high-paying job in Portland.
Michael moved to Cascade Locks, with the promise to his siblings that he would keep in touch and if they ever needed him all they had to do was call him. He and his family settled in a small house in the centre, close to the school but Michael missed ranch-life. He purchased a rundown lodge on the edge of the city and after a few years of hard work, he managed to establish it a proper ranch and their new home.
Life was good for a while but things between him and Charlotte began to get strained and it wasn’t long after he turned 32, that they decided to separate and ultimately divorce. There’s was no animosity between the two of them just simply that they just didn’t work together anymore. Charlotte moved to Portland and the two of them shared custody of the kids equally.
Christmas 2012 came around and instead of going to her father's, Eliza came to visit and stay with Michael. They spent the time catching up, joking about the whole ‘end of the world’ thing.and she helped him get the place ready for when Claire and Tom would be staying over, the week between Christmas and New Year (as he had gotten them for Christmas the year before).
Then the pulse hit. The first thing they knew of it was the lights went out and then the generator blew as a surge went through it. Michael headed out to try and find out what was going on, helping out where and how he could. Once things settled a bit and the worse of the damage and fires were taken care of, Michael saddled his horse and headed for Portland to check if a similar thing had happened there. What he found was more destruction and devastation but he didn’t find any sign of Charlotte or his children and he returned to Cascade Locks with fear in his heart that he would never see them again.
From the very start Michael helped where he could within the community, however, when emotions rose and a group (that would become the Chets) rose up, led by Saga, he and some others took a stand. He got into a heated argument with Saga and refused to follow her ideals and ‘rules’ for the most part and this resulted in him forming the Algoma (Oma) tribe and started the splintering of the community into the tribes and territories they keep now, three years on.
With the formation of the tribes, people began to use new names and Michael eventually became known simply as Buck, a shortening of his surname.
In more recent times, Buck as leader of the Oma worked hard and kept his tribe - the main resource of food in town - safe and with trading links with the others - although not getting along with the Chets for obvious reasons. The only Chet who is ever allowed in their territory without being questioned or watched being Topher, the doctor. At some point, more newcomers than usual were being sighted and a scout from the Cano, forest tribe, informed them that slavers were in the area. With several people missing and with the discovery of Honey - an Oma and the woman Buck had developed feelings for - gone with blood at the scene, Buck may have snapped a bit and was determined to head out after the slavers by himself if the rest of the rescue party didn't catch up to him in time.
