HISTORY: Caitriona's childhood mostly followed a familiar script for those of pureblood (or mostly pureblood) origins. Middle child, only daughter, the idea of proper behaviour, etiquette, appearances and expectations were early lessons. Isobel tried to temper the worst of the expectations placed on her children, but Cat saw it made people happy when she complied, especially her father, so she tried her best to take it all in. When time came for Hogwarts she was reasonably sure she would be placed in Slytherin, after all so many of the other pureblood children were, including her big brother, so she was a little surprised when the sorting hat announced her as belonging in Ravenclaw. At first Cat worried her parents would be disappointed, but it was the best thing that could have happened to her. The friends she made in that house helped her develop outside of the narrative she thought she would be following. Her very first safe space to drop all the manners and expectations was that dormitory and that common room she shared with her new housemates, and she learned so much from them beyond her formal education. After school it didn't take much for Caitriona to decide healing was what she wanted to do with her life. She went straight into the training programme at St Mungo's, and although it was hard work and odd hours, she still found time to date a little, and not date a little too. Sebastian Fawley fell more into the latter category. They were friends with some benefits that had become more frequent towards the end of Summer '96 and it was a shock for both of them when they discovered that Cat was pregnant that October. Having a baby was bound to change their lives, but this went further. To say either set of parents took it well would be a lie. There was talk of termination or Cat taking a 'break' in France and the child being adopted, but she knew that wasn't an option. She hated to disappoint her parents, and it would hurt to leave them, but she would take being disowned and cut off over being made to get rid of her baby, no matter how much of a shock it was. Eventually, over talks between their parents, it was decided the only other option was for there to be a wedding. A fast one. It still wasn't ideal on a social level, but it was better for their reputations than having a child born to the families out of wedlock. From one summer to the next she went from just a healer trainee stressing about exams and perfecting her charms, to a wife with a newborn. Neither she nor Sebastian really knew how to navigate this new life they found themselves in. They weren't in love with each other, they just were good in bed together and did as they were told when that turned on them. It was almost a small blessing when the return of Voldemort gave them something else to focus on. She rode out that worst year on maternity leave from her training, watching people she knew getting caught in disgusting wizarding purity ideals, people turning on each other and on those they considered beneath themselves. It was a scary time and her heart ached to try and help where she could, but the thought of leaving Maia with anyone scared her too much. Cat couldn't even pretend to know what Sebastian was caught in when he left their house each day, she just put her trust in the idea he would come home at the end of it. Once Voldemort was gone again, she went back to finish her training, on a part time basis at first. When the curse was announced she became fascinated by it, feeling even more grateful for her healthy, brilliant daughter. Over time she has moved over to St Mary's hospital for women and children, working with children in general, but also with a programme monitoring the children born from the pair bonds. It does often make her think of trying to have another child, but she feels selfish for considering it when she has Maia while some women have no-one. As for her marriage... they tried. They played the part at events and family functions, they tried to play the part at home, but they knew it was a farce. First it was the idea of bringing others into their bedroom to see if that helped, but sex was hardly the answer, they needed more than each other. There was a period where they were both having affairs and pretending the other didn't know, but in the end the decision to seperate was the best one they could have made. Nowadays they keep seperate homes, sharing custody of Maia and coparenting pretty damn well if they do say so themselves. Perhaps one day they will complete the divorce, but they aren't in a hurry yet, and they are happy as friends. |
