sirius black

FULL NAME: Sirius Orion Black
AGE/BIRTHDATE: 18 | 31 October, 1959
BLOODLINE: Always Pure
SEXUAL ORIENTATION: Mostly straight; a Kinsey 1.75
WAND: Mahogany & Dragon Heartstring, 12"
ALIGNMENT/LOYALTY: Order of the Phoenix
HOGWARTS HOUSE & YEARS ATTENDED: Gryffindor, 1971-1978
CURRENT RESIDENCE: The Doghouse, on the outskirts of Liverpool
CURRENT OCCUPATION: Curse Breaker trainee
PATRONUS: Padfoot (a large, scruffy black dog, something like a mix between a Newfoundland and an Australian Kelpie)
BOGGART: Himself as a purist. The specific image varies; sometimes he's wearing green dress robes and the family signet ring, other times he's casting the Dark Mark into the sky or torturing a Muggle child.
AMORTENTIA: Leather, petrol, and freshly baked bread.
ROLE IN THE WAR: Order of the Phoenix member
ACTIVITIES AT SCHOOL: Gryffindor Quidditch Team (Beater; 1972-1978)
PB: Ben Barnes

FAMILY & RELATIONSHIPS:
• Regulus Black (brother)
→ In childhood, they were best friends. Sirius looked after Regulus, protected him from their cousins, and taught him everything he knew. However, once Sirius started questioning their parents and Regulus didn't, they started to grow apart. They haven't spoken since Sirius left home. There's a part of him that misses his brother, but he staunchly refuses to admit this, and insists that Regulus is a slave to their parents' thoughts and is beyond saving.
• Walburga Black (mother)
→ Even when Sirius was young and trying to please his parents, he recognized that Walburga was kind of crazy. He learned early how to avoid her moods...and then when he decided he didn't care, he learned exactly how to trigger them. It was Walburga's fanaticism that drove Sirius to question his parents' beliefs; if she had been more like Orion, Sirius may not have rebelled quite so strongly or so early in his life.
• Orion Black (father)
→ To Sirius as a child, Orion was almost untouchable: the cold, powerful, decisive portrait of masculinity. While Walburga would fly into rages, Orion would either shout or be steely, maintaining his iron grip of control on the situation at all times. Sirius never felt anything towards Orion other than an early desire for his approval; a consistent, low-grade fear, and eventually, complete disdain, but he was never as openly disrespectful to Orion as he was to Walburga.
• Bellatrix Black (cousin)
→ Even when they were children, Sirius remembers Bellatrix as being cruel. He remembers being pushed down stairs and seeing house-elves and other children being tortured by Bellatrix in whatever imaginative ways she could dream up, and he remembers protecting Regulus from her like both their lives depended on it (which they very well may have).
• Narcissa Black (cousin)
→ Though Sirius never particularly cared for Narcissa, he never loathed her, either. To Sirius, Narcissa always seemed fussy and overly concerned with staying clean and doing things properly. He would still not claim to hate Narcissa in particular (except by virtue of her being part of the family); rather, he is mostly ambivalent about her.
• Andromeda Tonks (cousin)
→ Andromeda has always been, and will always be, Sirius' favourite cousin. She was more apt to get into trouble with him than either of her sisters, and she had less of a taste for cruelty and/or finery. Plus, she was also exiled, for marrying a muggleborn...which makes her pretty freaking cool in Sirius' book.

OTHER SIGNIFICANT RELATIONSHIPS:
• James Potter (brother; partner in most epic bromance of all time)
→ James Potter and Sirius Black's friendship cannot be put into mere words. It can't even be expressed through interpretive dance. It is a thing of beauty such that mere mortal minds cannot fully comprehend it. They met on the train on their first ride to Hogwarts, and Sirius credits James entirely with his Sorting into Gryffindor. When Sirius ran away from home the summer before sixth year, it was to James' house he went, and James' parents took him in. Sirius is perhaps unhealthily emotionally attached to James; he will do anything James asks without question, and he fears James' disapproval perhaps more than he realises.
• Remus Lupin (marauder bffl)
→ Sirius makes it known that Remus was his contribution to the group that became the Marauders. The very first night at Hogwarts, in their dorm, Sirius coerced the somewhat shy boy into talking to the rest of them and participating in general boyhood shenanigans. When he found out that Remus was a werewolf, despite his upbringing, he did not think of Remus as dangerous or someone to be feared for one second. After all, his parents had been wrong about basically everything else; and anyway, this was Remus. Remus wouldn't hurt anybody! Sirius was happy to become an Animagi for Remus (and also, it makes him feel badass), and he grew closer to Remus in their seventh year after James started dating Lily.
• Peter Pettigrew (marauder bffl)
→ Sirius would also like to make it known that the only people allowed to make fun of Peter Pettigrew have names that rhyme with Pames Jotter, Birius Slack, and Lemus Rupin, and anybody else who tries it is going to have to answer to his fists or his wand, whichever he thinks of first. He has followed through on this promise several times, as the most hotheaded of the Marauders, and he will continue to do so. Unconsciously, Sirius puts himself and James on one level (James perhaps very slightly higher), Remus just below them, and Peter below Remus, but he will swear up, down, and sideways that Peter is just as much a Marauder as he is, and he genuinely would do anything for Peter, just as he would for Remus and James.
• Lily Evans (mrs. prongs)
→ To be completely honest, Sirius never particularly cared for Lily Evans. He always thought that yeah, okay, she was fit, but she was a stuck up cow with unacceptably Slytherin friends, and anyway, there were better birds for Prongs out there who would fall all over themselves for a chance at him. He also didn't like her high and mighty act, where she treated James like crap for what seemed like no reason to Sirius...and, he was also a bit jealous of her. Not that he was in love with James, just that James spent so much of his time once puberty hit fixated on Lily and not with his mates, where it belonged. Once James and Lily started dating, Sirius' dislike for her only grew, and he continued to lash out at her at every opportunity. It took a row with James to make Sirius see the light and actually look at Lily like a person, and once he did that, it turned out he quite liked her--she was funny and clever and kept the lot of them on their toes. However, there will always be a part of Sirius that resents Lily for stealing James away.
• TBA (NAME, deflater of egos)
→ James has Lily to reduce his ego to something potentially manageable, but who does Sirius have? This character should have a smart mouth and a friendly relationship with Sirius and the other Marauders, but should not be afraid to tell him when he's being an idiot, or vain, or arrogant, etc, etc, etc. Probably a student in the same year, though they could be any House but Slytherin.
• TBA (recipient of sirius' virginity)
→ A female character, ideally a year or two older than Sirius, who slept with him when he was in his fourth year and a fairly young fifteen (but gorgeous already, of course). Womanizer that he is, he's slept with many women since this one, but he will always remember her fondly, which translates to copious flirting whenever they interact.
• Benjy Fenwick (sirius' first male experience)
→ It's the '70s, bitches! Free love! Sirius enjoys very much immersing himself in muggle culture, which includes going to clubs and doing whatever Kids Are Doing These Days, which, during the summer of 1976, included experimenting with other men. Sirius and Benjy didn't sleep together, but they did come fairly close, and Sirius enjoyed the experience enough to do it again with others, though not as frequently as he sleeps with women. The pair of them never really talked about it, given Sirius' tendency to sleep around anyway. They're in the Order now and they get on well due to their similar backgrounds: their little experiment isn't public knowledge, but it's not really a secret either.

DETAILED PERSONALITY:
Above all else, Sirius is loyal. Once you're Sirius' friend, you're his friend for life, come hell or high water, and he will sacrifice his life for you without a second thought. He loves as he hates: fiercely and without a second thought. This sounds borderline Hufflepuffian...were the loyalty not accompanied by bravery, arrogance, and an unparalleled recklessness. Truly, Sirius is and always has been the poster child for Gryffindor; he was not merely sorted there out of a desire to rebel.

Sirius has always been very popular and well-liked by kids his own age. He is very charming, a good conversationalist, and an animated storyteller; simply existing near Sirius is fun (provided, of course, that he likes you). Sirius seems as though he will never grow up and take life...well, seriously. The simple fact is that after protecting his “friendmly”, Sirius' second goal in life is always to have the best possible time. He loves making people laugh, especially when that involves pranks. He also gives surprisingly good advice when asked (unfortunately Sirius suffers from a severe case of “Do-As-I-Say-Not-As-I-Do Syndrome”, but no one's perfect, are they?). In addition to his personality, Sirius is a great wizard and far more intelligent than he comes off at times, being particularly gifted with duelling and transfiguration. He's very good in a fight because he is courageous and excellent at improvisation.

If one only knows Sirius as an acquaintance, it's fairly easy to think that he's almost as wonderful as he thinks he is. He is a good person, but he's also flawed. Sirius is rather immature and has a sophomoric sense of humour. Because of his upbringing, he can often be thoughtlessly cruel to those he thinks "deserve it", much moreso than his friends. This cruelty is directed almost exclusively at Death Eaters and their ilk, but that does not excuse it, and he frequently has to be reigned in. In fact, it's not just Sirius' cruelty that could benefit from some discipline: all around, he is a man of extremes in every conceivable way. Sirius is wildly passionate and emotional, sometimes being on top of the world and other times sinking into a deep, almost depressive state. He smokes, drinks, and sleeps around to excess, and he subverts authority at every opportunity. For better or for worse, his emotional state bleeds into his treatment of those in his vicinity, and most close to him have learned to brush off harsh things he says when he's in a “mood”. He is also incredibly reckless. Accompanied by his overly strong pride, his arrogance, and his quick judgments of other people, this recklessness can be an extremely dangerous quality. Perhaps his most exploitable flaw is his naivete: deep down, Sirius truly believes that the Marauders, when they put forth their collective best efforts, are invincible.

LIKES: The Marauders, the Potter family, most people in the Order, Quidditch, his motorbike, rare meat, firewhiskey, full moons, a well-executed prank, Fizzing Whizbees, duelling, getting laid, taking risks, doing things other people say are impossible/that he can't do, creative Transfiguration, telling stories, having houseguests
DISLIKES: Voldemort, the Death Eaters, being associated with his family, 12 Grimmauld Place, the Ministry, being forced to think things through, inaction, stakeouts, anything made of silk, sugar quills, people who don't think for themselves, prejudiced gits, the words "Mudblood" and "Half-Breed", being patronized, apologizing
STRENGTHS: Leadership, quick decision making, bullshitting, flying, duelling, Transfiguration, is an Animagus, loyalty, courage, confidence, very charming, good at making people laugh, performs well under pressure, can produce a corporeal Patronus
WEAKNESSES: Arrogance, recklessness, quick to judge, impatience, cruel to those he dislikes, rebellious, no respect for authority, very proud, bad at defensive spells, underestimates opponents, overestimates own capabilities, refuses to admit defeat, unambitious
CHARACTER SURVEY: Here.
JUNG TYPE: ESTP.
ENNEAGRAM TYPE: 8.

PERSONAL HISTORY: Sirius Orion Black was born on Halloween in 1959, heir apparent to the Black family and all its wealth--and expectations. From birth he was schooled in proper posture, good manners, wizarding genealogy, French, Latin: all the things a well-educated pureblood boy should learn. Children were expected to be seen, shown off, and then shut away. From birth, this didn't sit particularly well with Sirius, who was naturally a rambunctious, enthusiastic child. But all little boys want to make their mummies and daddies happy, and so he did his best. He especially treasured his little brother Regulus. As soon as Reg was old enough to do things aside from lay in his crib and be cooed at by grown-ups, Sirius was dragging him around the house, defending him from their cousins and teaching him everything he knew.

For a while, everything was fine, but the older Sirius got, the more he realized he didn't actually like his parents very much. Or anyone in his family, really, except for cousin Dromeda and little Reg. Everybody else had a hairy heart, or they yelled a lot, or they were just mean in all sorts of ways, at least in the mind of a child. More and more, Sirius grew petulant, which increased the coldness and the anger. Walburga often flew into rages over Sirius' disobedience, which both frightened him and made him even more determined to stick to his position of rebellion.

Sirius didn't do much as far as rebellion at home--after all, his world was very small, and all he knew was that he didn't really like anyone. Once he got to Hogwarts, though, it all changed. His Sorting marked a change in the family's relations towards him. Before Hogwarts, before Gryffindor, his stubbornness was met with an iron fist and a very real effort towards making him fall in line. After the Sorting, he received no letter from home, not even a Howler. It was as if he no longer existed. Mercifully, he bonded quickly with his dormmates James, Remus, and Peter, who were far more interesting than his cousins had ever been. Christmas that first year was awful, the worst Christmas the spoiled young Sirius had ever had. A part of him had been expecting that he would be welcomed back as proudly as he had been shipped off, but it was frankly a wonder that they had even sent a house-elf to pick him up from the station. Despite the painful ostracism from home, Sirius enjoyed his time at Hogwarts immensely. Out from under the oppressive thumb of his parents, Sirius was charming, popular, and very well-liked. Once he, James, and Peter discovered Remus' secret, they began work on becoming Animagi. In Sirius' fifth year, they finally managed. Once they had taken up their positions as Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs, they needed a new goal, and so the Marauder's Map was conceived and work was begun. James began to flirt with Lily Evans; Sirius continued to flirt with the female half of the school, as well as a few select members of the male half.

Sirius spent his holidays at school or with James, except for summers, which were at first merely boring but then turned dangerous. Regulus had been sorted into Slytherin when he reached Hogwarts. This had the double effect of disappointing Sirius an incredible amount (he had missed him enough when just he was at school, but now they could never speak, it wasn't seemly) and making him the perfect son in their parents' eyes; all the better when sized up against Sirius. Walburga and Orion constantly reminded them of this, and though he tried hard not to rise to the bait, Sirius frequently lashed out at Regulus in addition to his parents. This behavior and the ensuing arguments worsened as Sirius picked up open-minded beliefs at school, degenerating more and more and more each summer until finally, Sirius and his stormy temper had had enough. Everything came to a head during the summer of 1976 in an argument regarding werewolves and other "half-breeds", Walburga used the Cruciatus Curse on her own son in a fit of temper, and Sirius, thoroughly disgusted by his parents, he ran away to live with James. Officially speaking, he was finally no longer a Black, but he was hardly left wanting--despite his own resulting estrangement, Alphard Black gave his nephew a great sum of money when he left.

During Sirius' sixth year, he committed what he regards as his greatest regret: telling Severus Snape how to get into the Whomping Willow. His intentions, though cruel and short-sighted, were not openly vicious. Sirius was not aiming for Snape to die (though admittedly he would not have been terribly upset if he had), he figured that Snape would get halfway down the tunnel, see Moony, and run screaming like a nancy back to the castle. It would all be a great laugh and something the Marauders could tease Snape about for ages, and nobody would get hurt. Of course, there were several very obvious problems with this idea, which Sirius only realised after James drug Snape out of the Willow, barely out of reach of Moony's jaws. Sirius was deeply, sincerely sorry for what he had done, but it took weeks before the Marauders were back as they ought to have been.

Despite refusing to study just on general principle, Sirius scored excellently on his NEWTs. His chief problem, as Professor McGonagall reminded him at every available opportunity, was his exceptional lack of ambition. As long as he had enough money to be comfortable and enough time to spend with his mates, Sirius didn't have any real goals. Since he had plenty of money in his Gringotts vault courtesy of Alphard, and not getting a job would seem to equal more time with his mates, that was Sirius' plan...at least, until he was approached by Dumbledore and asked to join the Order of the Phoenix. Sirius accepted at once, and asked almost hopefully if the Order would give him enough work to qualify as a half-decent excuse not to get a proper job. To Sirius' surprise, Dumbledore suggested he go into Curse Breaking: it was risky and dangerous, it involved lots of travelling, and the Order could use someone to influence both the goblins at Gringotts and the foreign wizards a Curse Breaker would meet on their travels. Without a good reason to say no, Sirius agreed.

Following graduation, Sirius has begun his Curse Breaker training. Most of it is conducted in specialized training rooms in Gringotts, but for specialized training and practical tests of skills, the trainees occasionally travel by portkey to exotic locales. Though it is, of course, work, Sirius has enjoyed his occupation so far, though not, perhaps, as much as his work for the Order (little though it has been). He could not care less that being a member of a vigilante group is illegal according to the Ministry. It's what his friends are doing, Dumbledore asked him to do it, and unlike the Ministry, the Order is actually helping take Voldemort down. As far as Sirius is concerned, that's more than enough to make it the right thing to do in his book. When he's not learning how to break old curses or doing vigilante work for the Order, Sirius enjoys spending time with his mates, long walks on the beach, sleeping around, clubbing, and generally being the portrait of the roguish young bachelor.
