CHARACTER INFORMATION NAME: Matthew Michael Murdock CODENAME: Daredevil AGE / DATE OF BIRTH: 17/August 19, 1994 SCHOOL: Howard Stark School Of tomorrow GRADE: Junior HOMETOWN: Hell's Kitchen, New York, NY SEXUALITY: Heterosexual APPEARANCE: Despite being just seventeen, Matt is already taller and lankier than most boys his age, standing at just over five feet ten inches. He hasn't filled out quite completely, or stopped growing for that matter and will eventually add another two inches to his height. He weighs roughly one hundred sixty-five pounds, which many people think its less than he does because he's so lean from secretly training at his father's gym and years of martial arts practice. Matt possesses the traits of your typical Irish-American with his red hair and freckles. His hair is generally messy, but with great effort Matt has been known to tame it from time to time. His eyes, once green, now a frosted blue, film-y color, unfocused and blind. But that doesn't detract from his otherwise handsome features, his lop-sided grin or his strong jaw, but some how adds to it. Typically he finds that most people feel uncomfortable when confronted with his blindness, so he tends to wear a pair of Ray Band style red-lensed sunglasses. And as far as fashion sense goes, Matt doesn't really have any. He wears typical boy things - jeans, t-shirts, sneakers - and even dressier things on occasion - dress slacks, oxfords, ties - but colors and things like that elude him, so everything he wears tends to be very basic, if not utilitarian. PERSONALITY: At the center of his persona is someone who has been completely isolated from majority of the population who do not understand his situation. While Matt insist that he's not helpless, only blind, it doesn't stop people from treating him differently due to what they perceive as a serious handicap, offering sympathy and help, however unwanted, which really prevents him from connecting with too many people and can come off as aloof because of it. But if you can get past all of that, you see that Matt is a very charming, very clever individual and a complete gentlemen (and something of a lady's man.) He is a capable individual not only because of his heightened senses but because he's a hard-working individual with a good head on his shoulders. Essentially, Matt has had to reteach himself how to do everything and in a way has become a creature of habit. He knows that there exactly 16 steps in the boys dorm, and that its 27 paces from the landing to his door. All of his books go in exactly the same place, all of his notes and homework are organized with little folds to the corners of the page and everything is labeled with tactile markings. Not only is Matt diligent in his efforts to maintain this level of organization, but always picking up new tips and tricks to make his life easier. He is ambitious; always striving to improve or better himself in some way, whether in the class room or the gym, he's always pushing himself to achieve more than his lot in life, a helpless blind boy. But Matt, unfortunately, can be at times self-righteous as well and isn't hesitant to lay down an "I told you so" or two when the time is right, otherwise he's not much of a complainer. He has cocky tendencies and can be a "show off punk with his fists" (as his mentor used to say), which tends to lead him into trouble, more often than not. There is very little he is afraid of, everything taken away from him at a young age, he feels there is very little left to lose and, so, sometimes takes unnecessary risks. His father always taught him to take those risks and to make his own luck, but that has had away of blowing up in Matt's face from time to time. Things always seem to go wrong for Matt when he breaks the rules or acts in any way selfish. And despite all of his positive qualities, he has a bit of a temper. Usually he keeps it in check, keeps it all reigned in, but even Matt has found he has a boiling point, that once reached can make him angry, or worse, violent, which in turn can cause Matt to become overwhelmed. Typically, though, Matt is more focused than that to let his emotions get the better of him. Matt is intelligent and cunning and always thinking ahead and in doing so is very careful about who knows he has enhanced senses. Matt is incredibly cagey about his abilities and maybe would prefer that people thought he were helpless, given the alternative. He makes sure to play up the "blind man routine" when it suits his needs to throw people off the scent, so to speak, because he is alone and is isolated and, really, there are very few people he can actually trust. Likes: Reading, jazz music, records, subtle perfume, boxing, Dislikes: Strong scents, computers, liars, people who treat him differently MUTATION/POWERS: Every since getting doused in a radioactive isotope, Matt Murdock has developed a superhuman enhanced sense of smell taste, touch, balance and hearing. ● Touch: Matt's sense of touch is so acute that his finger can feel the faint impressions of ink on a printed page, allowing him to read by touch. The rest of his skin is equally sensitive, enabling him by concentration to feel minute temperature and pressure changes in the atmosphere around him. Even with his senses of smell and hearing blocked, he can feel the presence of a person standing five feet away from him simply by his or her body heat and disturbance of air. ● Smell: Matt can distinguish between identical twins at twenty feet by minute differences in smell. Further, his ability to remember smells enables him to identify any person he has spent at least five minutes with by smell alone, no matter how he or she might try to camouflage his or her natural odor. His powers of concentration are such that he can focus upon a single person's smell and follow it through a crowd of people at a distance of fifty feet. ● Hearing: Matt's can hear a person's heartbeat at a distance of over twenty feet, or people whispering on the other side of a standard soundproofed wall. Through practice, Daredevil is able to control his hearing acuity, mentally blocking out specific sounds like his own breathing and heartbeat, all ambient sounds to a normal human level of perception, or all sounds but a particular sound he is concentrating upon. Matt also has the keen ability to detect whether or not someone is being truthful based on the rhythm of their heart. Also, and this probably goes without saying, he can identify people by their specific heartbeat patterns, if he hasn't already done so by scent. ● Taste: Matt has the ability to remember tastes and determine every single ingredient of food or drink. ● Balance: Not quite one of the five-sense, but Matt also possesses a superhuman sense of balance that allows him extra-equilibrium to pull off some of his more acrobatic maneuvers Radar Sense: Matt's "radar sense" functions via his brain's generation of energy within a certain portion of the electromagnetic spectrum and allows him to detect the proximity and arrangement of objects around him. The signal emanates from sending regions of his brain, after which it travels outward, bounces off an object and returns to receiving regions of his brain, similar to sonar. Via this ability, Matt synthesizes a very close analogue of three-dimensional human sight. SKILLS/ABILITIES: Matt has also been trained in the ninja arts by Stick, a master and member of the secret order The Chaste. Stick helped Matt control his powers and taught him valuable fighting techniques. Matt is well educated in martial arts techniques that target pressure points him to paralyze an individual's limbs. Matt's fighting style mixes boxing with Ninjutsu, Judo and Aikijujutsu. And due to a combination of his training and his enhanced sense of balance, Matt is an accomplished "traceur", a practitioner of parkour and has developed enough skills to get around, or leave a scene without a trace. Matt is a better than average detective using his intellect to figure out complex problems and hyper-senses to find clues and evidence to things going around him. Matt has a high IQ; he's logical and pragmatic and quick and cunning. Matt knows how to read Braille although he can read regular text printed on a page as well, thanks to his enhanced sense of touch. As far as limitations go, Matt is unable to discern pictures or video images, and he can only guess at colors based on the amount of heat they are absorbing or reflecting. If anyone or anything is not emitting anything that would trigger his heightened senses Matt would not be able to detect it. Matt's superhuman senses render him extraordinarily vulnerable to excessive sound, odors, etc., which can temporarily weaken his Radar Sense. Or if he is bombarded by too much sound at once, Matt can easily be immobilized, which causes him great pain and leaves him disoriented. HISTORY: Matt was born the only son of Jack Murdock, a heavyweight prize fighter and a mother he never knew, his father claiming that she died. His father wanted a better life for his son, and pushed him to excel in his studies. His mother was out of the picture, having abandoned him early in life. Matt was left to be raised by his father and Hell’s Kitchen, a neighborhood of New York City with a history of organized crime and a home for the poor. The elder Murdock took it upon himself to provide a better life for his son. He began to work as an enforcer for the Fixer, a local mobster, to give Matt more than his boxing winnings. However, Jack Murdock taught his son not to fight and tried to guide him into studies. In turn, his friends taunted him with the nickname, 'Daredevil', since he always went back to studying, (or secretly training in his father's gym) instead of doing things with them. Despite his father Jack’s involvement in crime, Matt grew up with extreme reverence for his father who constantly pressed him to study, to work hard to become a doctor or a lawyer and not "an educated pug" like him. Matt was raised with the strong morals and faith of an Irish American heritage. These morals first came into play when Matt saw a old man about to be hit by a truck, Matt jumped into action. He pushed the man out of harm’s way, but was hit in the face with a container of radioactive material, blinding him. Matt soon learned that although blind, his other senses had been transformed, giving him supernatural taste, touch, feeling, and taste. He also discovered a radar sense, giving him a form of vision, sensing electromagnetic waves that allow him a 3-D picture of the world around him. Matt focused on training his senses and his body, under the tutelage of a man known as Stick. He excelled at martial arts and gymnastics and honed his body and mind. During this time while Matt needed extra-care due to his "handicap", his father began to work as an enforcer for the Fixer, a low level crime boss in Hell’s Kitchen. The Fixer got Jack boxing again, and was able to get him a title shot, but asked him to throw the fight. When Jack refused, the Fixer had him killed. This sent Matt into a rage when the Fixer faced no charges or jail time and marked the first time Matt went out at night to take his own form of justice out on the Fixer and his men. But first things first, with family or friends of the Murdock's to speak of and Matt's unwillingness to be handed over to foster care, he sought refuge at his local parish where. It wasn't exactly a legal arrangement so much as Matt was squatting there, but with his living situation temporarily sorted he could focus on more important things - bringing his father's killer to justice. Matt hunted down and beat two of the Fixer's goons single-handedly with the skills he learned from Stick, without the other man's knowledge of course (who subsequently dropped him because of this.) But when it came to the Fixer himself, Matt was left distraught and unsatisfied when he tracked the Fixer to a brothel. The girls there thinking it was a raid attacked Matt and in an effort to flee accidentally kicked one of them out of the window, leaving her crippled for life and the Fixer still at large. Matt was quickly spiraling out of control and recognizing that threw himself into his studies and the promise he had once made to his father. He knew that he couldn't keep squatting at the church and set a plan into motion. From there he turned himself over to the authorities, guilt stricken about what happened with the Fixer, although he never admitted what happened. In a bid to escape "the system" he applied and was accepted to the Howard Stark School of Tomorrow needing to leave the city for a while to get his head about him, knowing that the city would eat him alive if he let it and that he had a promise to keep. MISC. INFO.: Not officially a weakness, but colds really trip him up, especially if he's all stuffed up. Matt carries with him at all times a white cane, it isn't cool or fancy, just a regular ol' white cane. Its collapsible, though, so that's something. Also? he's not very good at computers, understandably so. Went communicating on the journals he'll most likely be using some type of text to speech software to help him translate. PLOT IDEAS: Making friends with all the other "street-level" heroes - Peter Parker, Danny Rand, Jessica Jones. Having people find out about his powers because, well, lets face it Matt sucks at keeping this a secret. And because he's only seventeen and not an adult and therefore not an actual lawyer, do some type of debate team thing or some type of mock trial for student council or something! Something! Throw me a bone! Also, any lovely ladies out there that want to be Matt's girlfriend, I would not object.
