personality
Thoth prefers to observe first, then speak or ask questions. He's the kind of guy who takes copious notes about everything, and he always makes a grocery list, whether it be on paper or on his phone. It's not that he'll forget it if he doesn't write it down, but habits of such a long life are really hard to break. Besides, it keeps things organized, and that's how he likes it.

He's been accused of being a bit robotic sometimes, but that's not true. He might be very logical and methodical, but he does feel things very deeply. He just doesn't let his heart rule his head. It doesn't do him any favors, and usually ends up hurting him in the end. The only person he shows obvious affection to is his wife, Ma'at. And even then, it's always in a quiet sort of way.

He's authored several books over the years, about various subjects. but never for the money or recognition. Thoth just wants to spread knowledge and wisdom to everyone, and even if only a few handfuls of people read his book, he considers it time well spent. His publishers will pass on emails that people have written them every so often, and every time someone says they learned something new, or told all their friends about it because they were just so interested in it, it makes him smile. That, to him, is one of the best feelings in the world.

He still retains a little bit of his old magic, enough to make you think he looks slightly different, or to make your eyes slide right over him. He never uses it to take advantage of people, but sometimes it does come in handy in a tight spot.

history
The birth of Thoth is something that no one really agrees on. Some say that he created himself through the power of language. When his cult got more popular, the myths were rewritten to say that Thoth laid an egg from which Ra was born. His main center of worship was in Khnum, where he was worshipped as part of the Ogdoad, a group of eight gods; four pairs of male and female aspects of the creative powers

He was considered one of the more important gods of the Egyptian pantheon. He was the god of the moon, the heart and tongue of Ra, and the means by which Ra's will was translated into speech. Like a lot of Egyptian gods, he had quite a few titles, here's a sampling of them: "Scribe of Ma'at in the Company of the Gods," "the voice of Ra", "Lord of Ma'at," "Lord of Divine Words," "Judge of the Two Combatant Gods," "Judge of the Rekhekhui, the pacifier of the Gods, who Dwelleth in Unnu, the Great God in the Temple of Abtiti," "Twice Great," "Thrice Great,"" and "Three Times Great, Great."

As well as being the god of the moon, he was the patron god of scribes, created writing and the alphabet, was the god of magic, and the Greeks credited him with inventing 'astronomy, astrology, the science of numbers, mathematics, geometry, land surveying, medicine, botany, theology, civilized government, the alphabet, reading, writing, and oratory'. (Basically: Thoth knew everything, and he wrote it all down.)

Along with his wife, Ma'at (his wife was also named as Seshat, the goddess of writing), he stood on Ra's sun barge as it crossed the sky at night. It was also said that Ra made Thoth ruler of an area of the underworld called 'Land of the Caves'. He kept a list of everyone in his realm, and meted out just punishments for the sins they committed in life. In this role, he acted as Ra's representative in the underworld. When he was in the underworld, he was depicted as the ape A'an, the god of equilibrium. He was the one who reported when the scales of Ma'at were exactly even.

It was also said that he wrote the spells in the Book of the Dead, and also a volume called the Book of Thoth, in which he wrote down all the secrets of the universe. One of his titles was 'Author of Every Work on Every Branch of Knowledge, Both Human and Divine'. He used his knowledge to help Isis find Osiris after Set murdered him, and with Anubis, he created the first mummification ritual and brought Osiris back to 'life'. He also saved Horus' life by ridding him of a magical poison, and helping him fight for his rightful throne.

He was credited with inventing the accurate, 365-day calendar, as well as measuring and recording time. His calender replaced the incorrect 360-day previous version. It was said he won the extra five days by gambling with the moon, and for a rather good reason. Nun was pregnant by her brother-husband Geb, but Ra had forbidden her from giving birth on any day of the Egyptian calendar. Thoth won a portion of the moon's light (1/72), which equalled about five extra days, and Nut was able to deliver her five children on those days.

I could honestly talk about Thoth for a really long time, but suffice it to say, he was very important in the Egyptian mythscape, and his influence was vast and widely felt. Even after Egypt and her gods fell from power, Thoth endured in knowledge and ideas, because thankfully, those never really go away. He travelled to the most prominent universities in Europe and Asia for centuries, first studying there and then eventually teaching. He came to America at the beginning of the 20th century, because there was much to learn from this young country. He's been here ever since.
