Nutrition in Skyrim

While your character is here in Skyrim, they're going to need to figure out what's edible and what isn't. This is just a small guide to the various edible flora and fauna available in game. Additionally, this is a link to all the food items found in game.

FAUNA

Skyrim is home to many animals that we're familiar with right here on Earth. And, most of them are edible. However, we also have some creatures that are going to be new and exotic to the displaced residents. I'll try to give a taste comparison for some of the wild game and creatures native to Tamriel.

** Note -- Pigs are not actually in the video games (probably because "Bethany Esda Howard" is lazy), but I'm including them anyway because we have cows, chickens, and horses. Plus bacon is important.

  • Domesticated Livestock
    • Chickens
    • Horses
    • Cows
    • Goats - Tastes like beef, but not quite.
    • Pigs
    • Bees - Not really livestock, but still important in Skyrim. Best-known apiary in Skyrim is Goldenglow Estate, which serves five beehives for the purpose of making Black-Briar Mead.
  • Wild Game
    • Elk - Similar to beef.
    • Deer - Similar to beef.
    • Vale Deer - Striped bioluminescent deer/antelope. Only found in Darkfall Cave and the Forgotten Vale.
    • Wild Goats
    • Pheasants - Tastes like chicken, but a little leaner.
    • Bear - Red meat. Kind of gamey, a little sweeter than venison. Taste depends on their most recent diet (think berries vs. fish)
    • Rabbit - White meat like pork or chicken. Can be bland if not seasoned well. Braising/roasting & basting is a good technique.
    • Bristlebacks - Found in Solstheim, but are essentially wild boars. Tastes like a cross between pork and beef.
    • Mammoths - Good luck with this one. Probably tastes like elephant, which is pretty fatty.
  • Marine Creatures
    • Horkers - Tastes like walrus. As for whatever walrus tastes like, if you actually know, tell me. Because I tried to find an explanation and was denied the cure to my curiosity.
    • Clams
    • Mudcrabs
    • Salmon
    • Slaughterfish

FLORA

A lot of the plants in Skyrim are mainly used for Alchemy, but these are the ones that are used primarily for cooking food. Some of these double as alchemy ingredients.

  • Harvested Foods
    • Carrots
    • Cabbage
    • Leeks - Similar to a green onion but milder in flavor.
    • Gourds - Could mean butternut squash, spaghetti squash, pumpkins, and zucchini.
    • Potatoes
    • Tomatoes
    • Green Apples
    • Red Apples
    • Garlic
  • Herbs/Seasonings/Misc.
    • Salt
    • Moon Sugar - Isn't illegal by itself but is used to make Skooma, which is illegal.
    • Lavender
    • Jazbay Grapes
    • Juniper Berries - Ever had capers? Capers are basically juniper berries in a light brine.
    • Snowberries - A wild non-poisonous berry, similar to huckleberries or blueberries.
    • Honey

DRINKS

Most of what there is to drink in Skyrim is alcoholic. Alcohol warms the blood, and Skyrim is cold in several regions. The most popular drink here is mead, which is a golden-colored wine made from fermented honey.

  • Water (from streams and springs). Typically safe to drink from any stream given the lack of pollution in Skyrim.
  • Black-Briar Mead
  • Black-Briar Reserve
  • Honningbrew Mead
  • Colovian Brandy
  • Ale
  • Nord Mead
  • Spiced Wine
  • Surilie Brothers Wine
  • Wine
  • Alto Wine
