The Dark Brotherhood used to be one of the most respected and feared organizations in all of Tamriel. However, all of that has changed in the recent past, and they can hardly be called a working faction, anymore. The Dragonborn became curious about the rumours surrounding Aventus Aretino in Windhelm and decided to pay the boy a visit.

One thing led to another, and the Dragonborn found himself acquainted with the Penitus Oculatus. He was saddled with the task of eliminating the remaining members of the Dark Brotherhood. All the members were there at the Sanctuary - excluding Astrid, Cicero, and Babette. He'd already squared off with and killed Astrid. Cicero hadn't been anywhere near the Sanctuary when the Dragonborn attacked, and Babette was out "hunting".

With only two members left, the Dark Brotherhood has barely a semblance of a presence in Tamriel. But who knows? Things in Skyrim have a way of staying alive, even in the most adverse of circumstances.
