Character Original name: Ethan Hunter Tribal name: Hunter Tribe: Tawa Role: Security /pot farmer / musician
Age/DOB:41 & 30/07/73 Sexuality Straight Family:
Wife - Shanna (deceased, car crash during pulse) Daughter - Rosie - six (with him, NPC) Daughter - Caitlin - four (missing since the pulse, presumed dead.)
Physical description: Hunter is around 5'11 and 180lbs of lean muscle. He's pretty stereotypically attractive, but at the same time, a few more drinks and a few missed meals could easily tip him over into the "white trash" end of the scale. He has light blue eyes, and light brown hair that could do with a cut. His fingers are slightly yellowed from smoking, and he still wears his wedding ring on the appropriate finger.
Tattoos: This one, and on his collarbone, he has Rosie . Shanna . Caitlin, and a star on his back/neck at the top of his spine.
Hunter also has a scar from a bullet wound on the right side of his abdomen.
Personality: Hunter's personality has gone through a myriad of changes from his youth, through into adulthood and marriage. His alcoholism dictated a great deal of his personality as a younger person, making him prone to bouts of rage and depression. In some ways, he feels that the alcohol was to blame, that he can say "that wasn't me", and therefore move on with his life. But, deep down, there will always be that niggling doubt. The voice that still blames him for everything, that won't accept it as an illness.
Once he was sober, Hunter changed. He got his life back in order. He became more focused, more level-headed. He had a strong work-ethic, and he had a purpose in life. He wanted to be the best man he could be for his family, to provide for them. He felt that he owed it to them to keep himself clean and healthy, and he succeeded in that much of the time, keeping off the drink. He still had cravings, he still had moments of darkness and depression, but it wasn't constant any more.
After the pulse... Hunter seems to be a mix of the two. He's on the fence, he could topple in either direction. He sometimes feels like a ticking bomb, ready to explode into oblivion and darkness and depression. But he keeps on trying, keeps pushing on for his daughter's sake. How long will that be enough? He's not sure.
Skills and Training: Hunter can play guitar, he writes his own songs, and he has a decent singing voice. He's handy with a gun, he's physically strong and knows how to handle himself in a fight.
Strengths and weaknesses: Strengths: Loving father, good shot, physically strong, intelligent and well-read, determined, loyal. Weaknesses: Alcoholic, drug user, prone to bouts of depression, quick to temper, stubbornness, aggression.
Items carried: Handgun, packet of cigarettes, metal lighter.
History:
Ethan was born and raised in Arlington, Texas, the oldest of three brothers. His family had an average income, a regular sort of lifestyle, a pretty happy childhood. He played high school football, he got average grades- he wasn't unintelligent, he just didn't study well, and preferred to coast through with C's than put any work in to get better marks. He didn't go to college, and had never really planned on it. No one in his family had, it wasn't a goal that was ever suggested to him. His school was a fairly basic school, they were just glad if their students got their GED.
After high school, Ethan started working as a bartender in a local sports bar to earn a bit of cash. His younger brother, Caleb, joined the army , and served two tours of Iraq and one in Afghanistan. The youngest Hunter brother became a mechanic in Dallas. Ethan soon took to drinking most nights. And then every night. And then every day and night. And it was acceptable, it went with the job, it made it seem normal, like everyone did that.
One night, he drank so heavily that he got into a bar fight that ended in him throwing pint glasses at a customer, who then took out a handgun and shot him in the abdomen. It missed all of his vital organs, but once he got out of hospital, he found himself without a job, obviously.
What followed was an embarrassingly long period of "woe is me, the world is against me", where he hid from the world and drank and spiraled into a long, dark depression. After getting a DUI, Ethan was court ordered to attend AA, where he began the 12 step program, and got back into church. It was through the church that he met the woman who would later become his wife, and mother of his two children.
He got himself healthy, got a job working security, and when Shanna got pregnant, he upped his game and got a second job with a removals company during the day. His daughters were the light of his life, his reason for staying on the straight and narrow, for working hard and still managing to make it along to the big events. Everything to him was work, God, and family.
When the pulse hit, Ethan was in his home with his older daughter, cooking spaghetti. Shanna and Caitlin were heading home from the store. Fortunately, he had walked away from the stove for a moment when it burst into flames, the electricity zapping out all at once. He mostly just remembers Rosie screaming.
It was months before it was confirmed that Shanna was dead. Caitlin's body hadn't been found. He didn't want to leave the state. But having heard tales of the communities forming in Oregon, he and his daughter headed off on a 2000 mile adventure.
Writing Sample:
Ethan lit a cigarette, letting it hang lazily from his lips as he tucked his lighter away, and made about checking his gun. Things had been fairly quiet, but he knew that it was just when he let his guard down that everything could go to shit.
Satisfied that everything was in order, he tucked the pistol away again, and took a long draw of smoke before letting it spiral out. He squinted into the sun, making out the line of trees in the distance, marking the boundary of their tribe. Nothing, no movement, not even wildlife. He sighed, leaning back against a post, and just settling when a shadow passed over his face. He looked up at his visitor, and gave a lopsided smile as he recognised them. "Better watch yourself. Someone might think you's trespassing. That's how you get yourself shot, bud."
