Basic Information Full Name: Gwenog Marie Jones Nickname: Gwen (mostly to close friends and family), Jones (full volume on the pitch) Age // Birthdate: 36 // 23rd April 1968 Blood: Muggleborn Residence: Cottage with modified bathroom near Bethesda, North Wales, and a London flat, she splits her time about evenly between the two. Wand: Fir & Phoenix Feather, 13 1/3” Occupation: Beater and Captain for Holyhead Harpies, Beater for Welsh national team. Hogwarts House // Year of graduation Slytherin // 1986 Appearance General: Gwenog is not especially tall (although taller than average), and fairly muscular, she tends to wear jeans, t-shirts and leather jackets to informal occasions and robes to formal ones. She isn’t much of a fan of skirts or dresses but occasionally wears them with a lot of complaining in her head. She has two tattoos: a Celtic cross in knot-work on her left shoulder blade, and her right hip and part of her belly has a Welsh Green dragon which shoots flames when tapped. Her expression ranges from severe to flirty, often edging towards the former when presented with unknown people or when on the pitch. Height // Build: 5’9” // muscular side of athletic Hair // Eyes: Black, usually braided // Brown PB: Christine Adams Personality First Meeting: Gwenog has developed a justified reputation for being rude, abrasive and having a bad temper. All of these things are true and if you literally run into her in the street she’s quite likely to swear at you. That said if you’re a fan and/or approach her politely she may turn on the charm. She tries to keep her mouth in check for reporters, but she’s not all that successful and she’s gained a bit of a reputation over the years. Her publicist despairs. Sexuality: Pansexual (preference for women) General: Gwenog is a strong, driven, and somewhat calculating and manipulative person. She absolutely loves her job and will pursue it or something in the field as long as she possibly can. She’s strong willed and deeply sexual, but also rather prickly. This is partly self-preservation from being first a ballet-loving tomboy and later a muggleborn Slytherin. She’s disciplined and passionate about her work and trains daily in one way or another. She’s also sarcastic, protective of her team and family and a staunch feminist. If she wasn’t she might people get away with calling her a bitch, mostly they don’t, instead she uses her transfiguration skills to turn them into a variety of small bugs. She never squashes these people, just lets them run around for a few minutes before turning them back. She has a streak of dark, filthy humour running straight through her, and also likes to flirt with a lot of people. She tries to keep this away from teammates purely due to the possible awkward situations, but there’s been at least one incident of a player leaving after a failed affair with her. She’s a feminist and would never move teams because she likes proving that a team full of women can win in a rather masculine environment. People call her a bitch, and if she didn’t hate the sexist connotations she would own the word. Instead she likes to think of herself as a strong, confident, leader with a few anger issues. Hobbies: Trying out new strategies and brooms and manoeuvres. Hooking up with random people. Collects Welsh dragons of all (non-live) types (cuddly toys, figurines, any that fans send her as a gesture of support get kept, although her collection isn't strictly known about), all sorts of strength and conditioning training. She loves to take night flights around the Welsh countryside, although she makes sure to stay well away from the dragons. History Childhood: Parents: Owen and Carys Jones. He's a 63 year old retired GP, she's a 59 year old seamstress and schoolteacher. Siblings: Older brother, Cai (40). They get on well, although they don't see each other all that often. She's very protective of him and he's less than impressed his sister is able to win physical fights with him and often beat him in magical prank ones too. Other Relatives: Cai's muggle wife, Isolde and their daughter Una (12). (Yes they are all very Welsh.) Hometown: Llysfaen a small village near Llandudno, North Wales Gwenog was born to a muggle family in the tiny Welsh village of Llysfaen only a few miles from the North Wales coast. Her mother was one of the teachers at the small primary school (Ysgol Cynfran), and her father was a GP in nearby Colwyn Bay. Her older brother Cai was deeply unimpressed by his little sister and once she was old enough to understand him he told her this in no uncertain terms. Being from a small community though there wasn’t a huge amount of opportunity to get away from each other and thankfully they learned to get along most of the time. Their household was a happy one most of the time and Gwenog enjoyed an almost idyllic childhood where she was cared for by her parents and got to experience a wide variety of activities. She always loved to explore and climb anything, and go exploring with the local boys, much to her mother’s chagrin. Her first sign of magic was when she fell from a tree and instead of breaking her arm or leg she bounced gently on the grass. Most of her accidental magic was far less dramatic. In despair of her tomboy daughter Carys sent Gwenog to ballet lessons to try and teach her grace and discipline. She expected protests but Gwenog was enchanted and took to the hard work quickly and became a dedicated student, often taking lead parts in the shows, although once this was after a rather convenient accident on the part of the girl who was originally picked. Yet more accidental magic at work. The beauty of ballet didn’t stop Gwenog getting in fights trying to prove herself, or getting in trouble for aggressive talking when playing football on the playground. None of the ballet girls understood why she wanted to do both, and the boys who took the piss one time too many tended to find themselves in pain one way or another. When deciding on secondary schools Gwenog tried out for several dance schools before resigning herself to the local secondary. When her Hogwarts invitation turned up on her 11th birthday she was ecstatic after having worked herself up to going away for school she’d disappointed to have no place. Using the excuse of a late place becoming available she had the perfect cover for the inquisitive villagers. She was placed in Slytherin and found yet another chance to prove herself, especially as a muggleborn. When she started school the first wizarding war was still taking place and she would never have found favour in her house if Slughorn hadn’t caught her evading a pureblood classmate’s taunts by means of some quick wand work and a swift knee to the groin in her first month. Upon discovering her proficiency in much spellcasting (although sadly not his own subject) he asked her to join the Slug Club. She used this to her advantage and when she discovered her proficiency on a broom she managed to enlist his help to secure her a trial at the start of her second year but anti-muggleborn sentiment was high until well into her third year as the first wizarding war was still happening and she only made the reserves, despite Slughorn’s persuasion and her own cunning and skill. Her skills and usefulness managed to keep her away from too much trouble until the war was over, but she was rightly scared much of the time and studied hard to be able to defend herself. When Voldemort was defeated for the first time she was immensely relieved, especially when it meant she was allowed to join the house quidditch team. By then she’d definitely become an attack-as-a-defence sort of person and favoured an aggressive style of play which helped win matches but didn’t endear her to the other teams. Of course by this time Slughorn had gone, but they kept up a correspondence. Gwenog excelled at Transfiguration in particular and gained Os in both her OWL and NEWTs and spent two years at Quidditch Captain. She was also good at Charms and DADA, but always a bit lacking in Potions. She took Ancient Runes for OWL and the fact English was already her second language (she grew up speaking Welsh before English despite her parents both being bilingual) meant that she did fairly well at it. In her holidays Gwenog always went home and often took ballet classes to make up for the practice she had just barely been able to hide and do in a dormitory full of other witches. Gwenog realised around age 14 that she was very much attracted to girls and made several unsuccessful attempts at trying to date classmates until her sixth year. In her sixth year she found a kindred spirit from another house and spent several months finding places to snog her stupid at every opportunity. It was during this time that she first transfigured somebody else fully, and did so as a threat to a fellow Slytherin who came across them semi-naked in a disused classroom. She broke up with her girlfriend soon afterwards because she hated someone having something to hold over her and it wasn’t like she was in love. Adulthood: With a little help from Slughorn Gwenog secured a trial with the Holyhead Harpies immediately after finishing Hogwarts and began the tradition of sending him tickets as thanks. Although she was a reserve player for two years she soon became a valuable member of the main squad. She has dedicated most of her time since Hogwarts to her career and began playing for the Welsh national team four years after finishing school. By that time her reputation as a tough player was already established. She’d gone through a period of dating mostly men and wasn’t out, but on her first European tour she took herself to the opera on a night off (mostly for the ballet but she also had an appreciation for the music) in Brussels and fell for the mezzo soprano JoJo Parry (Joelle Josette). Thanks to a long wait at the stage door and her most persuasive language (and not a hint of magic thanks to International law) she managed to talk her way into JoJo’s bed that night. That was the start of a relationship which lasted on and off until 1998 (around 8 years). She became enough of a fixture in Gwenog’s life that she knew about the magical world, although didn’t often take part in anything actually in it. JoJo and Gwenog never shared a house officially but JoJo took several contracts in the UK. Their relationship was always tempestuous because they are both strong willed women and in reality wanted more sex than their mismatched schedules could provide. These qualities led to fights and breakups and both of them having flings with other people. Upon the return of Voldemort Gwenog immediately went on high alert and talked JoJo into moving back to mainland Europe in a string of different contracts. She also convinced her parents and brother (and his wife and daughter) to abandon Wales for their own safety. Her parents took both took an extended trip around Europe, often visiting JoJo, with money they had saved for their retirement. Cai ended up finding a job in Canada and moving there on a rather more permanent basis than she’d intended, but she was thankful he was safe. Gwenog, however, refused to run from her homeland. She knew just how to defend herself. Her Transfiguration skills came into play and she dropped out of the league and began to put up defences around the homes of muggleborns she knew of all over Wales and flew patrols in the dark of night. Having kept up with many muggle skills she managed to keep a low profile by moving around and using false names. Following the defeat of Voldemort for a second time an owl from Professor Slughorn found her and she immediately returned to the Wizarding World proper and took back her place on both the Harpies and the national team. In the aftermath of the war JoJo and she finally broke up for good. Since then she has had a string of short flings and one-night-stands and if she actually cared about the media’s thoughts on her aggressively sexual nature she might get disheartened. As it is she just tends to get pissed off about how she is portrayed in comparison to, say, Oliver Wood. Miscellaneous List three random facts about your character: - She posed for the Wizarding equivalent of Playboy a few years ago and gives not a crap that lots of people have seen her naked. - She’s invented some moves for the team thanks to watching various muggle sports on TV when visiting her parents. - Despite rarely looking or dressing in a traditionally feminine way she took ballet as a child before Hogwarts and kept up classes in holidays, she still does the stretches and exercises now, and is disappointed she never made it onto pointe. She has a love of classical music which grew from this. Social life: Gwenog doesn’t particularly have many close friends. She has a wide circle of acquaintances and former flings and people who she exchanges favours with. If you gain her friendship though she will be a fierce friend and protector. Community involvement: Gwenog might sometimes turn up to the pub quiz, sometimes turn up to yoga, and sometimes turn up to the duelling club, but mostly she likes to come in for a pint. She’s also likely to be a Wingbeat regular (match dependant, of course) Samples I know this isn’t necessary but this is a previous incarnation of Gwenog in a photoshoot: she was fun.
