and i can appreciate from a different perspective that ive thrown myself into life and ive experienced a lot and that a lot of people would envy me, but that doesn't change the way things haunt me at night when i cant sleep. i wish i was still a virgin who had never had more than one drink in an evening and considers a big party to be overwhelming and exciting.
if i could tell anyone still young enough to make that decision any advice at all - i would tell them to retain dignity at all costs.
this is exactly the sort of thing that makes me think about my students and what i really want them to end up learning and this is the sort of thing that i think belongs in a PSA but then it would be just another PSA and this is the sort of thing that makes me so unbelievably impressed with the writer and this is the sort of thing that makes me feel (maybe just a little) less bad for not having thrown myself into life and for not having experienced as much as maybe i should have...
and, really, what it is i want my students to end up learning is to think for themselves and particularly to think about what they've done and who they are and who they want to be and how all of that connects.

Stephanie Harrell reads "Girl Reporter," a short story recounting LoisLane's torrid relationship with the man of steel. (Running Time: 39:58) [ Stream Audio ] [ Download Audio ]
About "Girl Reporter" When I was a kid, scouring the 7-11 racks for super-hero comics, the girlsuperheroes were always hard to find. I wound up having to identifywith the damsel in distress character, the girl who always gets saved. The problem was, deep down, I wanted to be the super-hero, the persondoing the saving. And this story emerged out of that contradiction.
About the Author: Stephanie Harrell Stephanie Harrell has had stories in Jane, Speak and One-Story. She currently lives in San Francisco with her husband and three children and is working on her novel.

Why would you list something on eBay and have it end, say, a week before you get back from vacation? I have a bad feeling that this is the case with a number of things i've bought in the past few days where I haven't heard anything from the seller and have no idea if stuff has shipped...

Radia Perlman, the inventor of the algorithm summarized it in the form of a poem, titled "Algorhyme": (It should be noted that this poem was modified from the original entitled "Trees", by Joyce Kilmer).
I think that I shall never see A graph more lovely than a tree. A tree whose crucial property Is loop-free connectivity. A tree which must be sure to span. So packets can reach every LAN. First the Root must be selected By ID it is elected. Least cost paths from Root are traced In the tree these paths are placed. A mesh is made by folks like me Then bridges find a spanning tree.

i think that i've been too busy trying to survive to think much about actuallly living. i feel like i've gotten to being terribly boring lately and (perhaps even worse) seemingly unmotivated to do anything about it.
i think i've decided to stop drinking for a while.
this entry seems rather random and unfocused.

Saturday, after much considering and agonizing, I went to CDW and bought a B-stock ThinkPad X41 tablet. In fact, I'm using it right now to write (actually write) this post. This turned oat to be a very fortunate purchase gnu this afternoon my desktop started acting strangely and upon rebooting wouldn't go past the BIOS splash screen (no POST, no nothing). Normally, while I never wantons of my computers Hoedown, one isn't a big deal but my iMac has been in dire need of a clean system install for weeks now and isn't particularly functional. two machines down is a problem. The iMac just needs a full day of software reinstallation and massaging to be happy, so it will be up and running a day or so after I'm out of school. The PC, however, will probably need a few hours of diagnostics and a few hundred dollars in hardware to work. Not fun. At least I have this tablet to work on, otherwise I'd be stuck with my old Toshiba Portege laptop which is slow as hell.

Poe - Hey Pretty (Drive-by Remix) |
] |
Tonight was the first time in a long time that the anxious voice in my head was so hard to stop that I listened to music loud enough to hurt. I drove fast on the highway, the windows down and the stereo blasting, trying not to think that maybe the reason a certain friend hasn’t called me back is that something horrible happened and she’s in bad shape or dead and no one knows to call me, trying not to wonder why (of the few I get at all) the most incidental and everyday hugs seem to be the best.
