What a beautiful state we're in. She damned if she don't If history hang hang hangs her well Her memory won't There's been a procession Of sweet hearts passing through Some of them left no trace at all Some left her black and blue She come alive when she dying She come alive when she dying She come alive when she on her last legs She come alive when she dying She come alive when she on her last legs She damned if she will She damned if she won't Some of them left in one piece And some she damn near broke And I am no stranger to the strange all his ways What could be stranger than to be stuck outside your cage She come alive when she dying She come alive when she on her last legs She come alive when she dying She come alive when she on her deathbed PERSONALITY The jailers in my mind are all dead. I love you so much, never forget all of our secrets are coming undone. What a beautiful state we're in. Goodnight, another bad morning One might assume that Jess is an unhappy individual, but she really isn't. She feels free for the first time in her life. She gets paid for doing something she likes. The heroin makes her feel amazing, and it hasn't taken over her life, which she is grateful for. She misses her brother Joey, and she thinks about him a lot. The rest of her family she considers pieces of shit. She never wants to see any of them again. They remain some of the only people she truly hates. To most others, she is open, kind and pleasant in her own way. She is actually quite generous too, and she spends one day a fortnight working in a soup kitchen. She has a great sense of humour and she likes hanging out at Jesse's garage or with any of her other friends and shooting the shit. She thinks her life is great and she's just enjoying herself and trying new experiences. HISTORY The speed's working, I see it in everyone like a lost idea under lightbulb sun. Your eyes, ready for take off melt in your head. What a beautiful state we're in. Jessica Van der Berg was raised in an affluent family. They had an apartment on the Upper East Side and she attended a catholic girl's school and got top grades. She was the baby of the family, being much younger than everyone else. She was taught that her mind didn't really matter, however, as she would marry a rich man one day and make a good little wife. Her job would be setting up benefits, attending parties, and being well-behaved arm candy. When she was 13 and her brother Joseph was 17, he ran away from home. He had been the only sibling she really got along with, and with him gone, she started to see just why he had left. Her older brothers were all jerks who entered into loveless marriages and all have mistresses, just like their father before them. Joey had left for something different. He had left so he could be who he wanted to be. Jess kind of hated him for that. The family spent every summer in some beautiful location overseas and the summer she was 16 was the first year Jess ran away. She was in Marrakesh and so it probably wasn't the best idea, but her family caught up with her two days later and brought her home. She was not pleased, but she continued on with her schooling. Her senior year she was assaulted by a teacher and when she told her family, they didn't care. She told the authorities and nothing was really done about it. Jess finally understood she meant absolutely nothing to her parents. She put her head down and let them pay for college so she could get educated and then get out. She studied art and music at University, pleased her parents actually let her study whatever she wanted. They didn't expect her degree would matter anyway. It was just to make her more attractive to future partners. And then, a year ago, Jess was contacted by Lena Rainmayr. In fact, Lena contacted every Van der Berg possible to say that Joey had gone missing. Jess was terrified for her brother and she begged her parents and brothers for help, and none of them did a thing. Jess had had enough. She left without a word, just like her older brother had, and she never looked back. She stayed with a friend she had met at university, dyed her sandy brown hair black and started dressing in a way her parents would be horrified by. Then she tried drugs, starting out with weed and eventually finding her favourite was heroin. She worked odd jobs and eventually got herself a tiny, shithole apartment. She started dealing to help pay the bills and then one of her buyers mentioned a brothel she could work at to make a lot more than her jobs in food service provided. She now works for Naamah and she deals for Heroin, and she's fully aware of who Heroin is. She lives in a slightly less shitty apartment, and she has a circle of friends she considers family. One of them is ex-boyfriend, current friend Jesse Delacroix. Having left while Joey was still missing, she has no idea he lived through his time with Lucifer. She assumes he is either still missing or dead, which is why she never sought him out. | ![]() JESSICA Damned if she do. Damned if she don't.
