...those were the words that rang loudly in her ear when she walked down the aisle of the church and for awhile it disappeared into the recesses of her brain, but later that evening at the reception those words rang loud and clear. She was talking to the flower girl, Libby and glanced up to see her new husband, Mark brush his hand lightly over the maid-of-honor's hip. It wasn't innocent and from that moment on her eyes were wide open.
Everything he did was in access, but that's why she fell in love with him. She loved his laughter, his crazy almost boyish sense of style and humour. It was all fine and dandy as an engaged couple but once they were married, her eyes opened wide.
Baby blues, searching for something more. She sewed and cooked, worked full-time just as he did but was still expected to make his lunch and do his laundry. They lost their spark and the once heated arguments that ended in hot make up sex turned to heated arguments where no one came out on top. Jenni lost herself in that red brick ranch in the suburbs even though she grew up in the town a few miles away. She longed for something more, but looked to him to give it to her. Looked to anything and everything she could to save her, was that Prince Charming in the distance? No, "It ain't no fucking fairytale", right? Jenni should have been looking to herself, to save herself, but her eyes were wide shut.
Five years later, that supposed Prince Charming wasn't living up to his name. Four artificial inseminations later and her body wasn't living up to it's purpose. Stress, scheduled romps in bed in addition to a growing alcohol problem and Jenni started to stray. She took a job as a flight attendant for Continental Airlines and started peeling her eyelids from her tear-filled cheekbones. She signed up for long overnight trips, weekend trips and sometimes week-long trips. She didn't have children to care for, well...she had one, but the bottle took care of him just fine. It was a new beginning, and she was making friends in every city. Her snow globe collection grew, as did her frequent flyer miles, as did her chances of joining the mile high club.
She wasn't used to having men come on to her so aggressively. It made her uneasy. Didn't they see her platinum wedding ring? It made her feel good though, and without realizing what she was doing, she bought a red lipstick at the small shop in Tampa Bay's airport; one extra button on her blouse went undone, and before she knew it she had joined the club.
He was an attractive man on his way back from Italy and she was sure his wife or girlfriend sat in first class, probably asleep, or drunk, or stupid to his cheating ways. She didn't regret it one bit, but she did slip him her cellphone number and hoped he was a frequent flyer on the friendly skies.
The Marriage ~ openmale is Jenni's husband. They have been married for over five years and nothing has been what she expected. It's now a cold, indifferent and loveless relationship, but neither do anything about it.
The Affair ~ coleman was "the man" she met on the flight from Italy to New York last year and the two kept in contact. When he moved to her hometown of Chicago she thought she would see him more, but he never called. They meet again unexpectedly on a flight and rekindle their "affair". They reunite...in progress."
