Character Info Fandom: OC Name: Kelan Age/Birthday: Mid-20s Species: Humanoid from the Liak system. Sexuality: Straight Personality and History: Kelan is a dark-skinned humanoid. He's almost indistinguishable to Terran or Island Humans, but he has one or two differences that can be seen if you look closely. Much like a lot of animals on Earth, his eyes reflect light when light conditions are poor (the color changes depending on the angle). Also, if he were 100% healthy, he would be able to adapt to almost any atmosphere that's capable of sustaining life, and even has a basic set of gills behind his ears, although if they aren't needed they're almost invisible to the naked human eye. This ability is why a lot of people from his home system are "recruited" for the Factory. He's been there for a long time now, and can't really remember much before arriving there. He knows who to talk to, who to avoid, the best places to sleep and eat, and most importantly, who to trust. A lot of the overseers don't care what happens to the workers. A few of them are downright nasty, but there are a few who are worth knowing. Not befriending, never that, but they help as much as they can within reason. He knows all of them, and what their help will cost. He knows the system and how to work it as best he can.
Kelan is sick. His lungs are damaged beyond anything the medics in the Factory can (or are willing to) fix after many years of working in the most toxic of environments and breathing in only the Gods know what. He wheezes a lot, tires easily and most times when he's off-shift, he's coughing up all manner of gunk. Some days, when it's really bad, he'll pass out and collapse. These days are becoming more and more frequent. He also has a number of wounds across his back that won't heal properly, and are probably infected; he doesn't know, he can't see them to check.
His true name is a secret, only to be given to those he trusts and cares for. Currently, nobody knows his true name other than his namer, his Gods and himself. The name he uses is that of a felid on his home planet. Kelans are small and clever and since they're found on almost every major landmass in his home system, it's a common belief amongst his people that they can survive anywhere. All traits he'd like to think he shares with an actual kelan.
Although he has been in the Factory for as long as he can remember, and has no real memory of his home, he still keeps to the ways of his Gods as best he can. His prayers are frequent, his offerings less so (but his Gods know where he is and so they will be merciful) and he tells himself the Stories at night when he can't sleep due to the pains in his chest or the coughing is keeping him up. There are 5 Gods, whose names are known but never spoken. The God of Family and healing and his brother, the God of Travel and protection. Their twin sisters, God of War and justice, and God of Weather and food, and then there is their sibling who watches over the afterlife and all those who pass into Their realm. Kelan wears a prayer necklace that he made when he was much younger, with charms for four out of the five Gods - the God of Travel's charm is missing. The necklace is the only thing he still has from his home.
A year ago, he met a girl. A girl with a family (that was about to get bigger) and absolutely no knowledge of where they were or how to work within the Factory. They didn't even know the language beyond a few basic words that were hardly enough to get by. But she was kind to him when nobody else was. People were used to him collapsing during the more strenuous jobs, and thought nothing of dragging him out of the way or even just stepping over him when he lay on the floor. This girl, though. She helped him get clear of everyone's feet and spent precious time with him, making sure he could breathe again before returning to her own work. This happened three times before he looked for her off-shift and discovered just how he could help her in return. He taught her the language and the overseers she could go to for extra rations or supplies, and all kinds of insider knowledge on not getting screwed over in the shelter. Eventually, after many lessons, shared shifts and mealbreaks, continued collapses and even him picking up some of her language, he considered Sookie and her family to be friends. A rare thing indeed in the Factory.
And then Sookie told him they were leaving. He knew he couldn't go with them - he was too slow, too ill and too much of a risk to even try it. If it had been anyone else, he'd have simply wished them luck and turned a blind eye to their planning, but it wasn't, it was Sookie and Tom and the Izzys, and their litter of little ones. The strength of his feelings for them, and for Sookie in particular, took him by surprise; he would do everything he could to get them out of the Factory and the shelter. They had to be quick, by necessity. Tom's Izzy was about to have her babies, and they needed to leave ASAP. Kelan told them what shift that evening would be the best one to leave, who would be working and how best to get past them. He even offered to go free littlest Izzy's creature for them. Before he left to free Aslan, he quickly grabbed Sookie's hand, pressing the charm for the God of Travel and protection from his necklace into her palm and closing her fingers over it. "Keep this safe for me, and He will keep you safe," he told her with a smile, and then left. He freed the creature, and then went to find something very strong to drink. A few hours later, he was found and dragged in front of the main Overseer after a few quick blows to the head. Half-dazed, he could only stare at the man as he yelled about people escaping and valuable resources being wasted and all sorts of stuff. All he could really make out was that Sookie and her family had escaped, he was going to get the electrowhip, and was about to spend some time on severely-reduced rations whilst doing some of the worst jobs. And then he blacked out, so he missed whatever else was said.
That was roughly half a year ago for Kelan, and he's still not recovered from his punishment. The electrowhip wounds on his back can't heal properly if he doesn't have enough food, and his lungs are a lot worse than before. He has no idea what happened to Sookie or her family, but he has to believe that they're okay because one of his Gods is no longer protecting him, or so it would seem.
