APPEARANCE: Bastien is what one might call 'traditionally handsome.' His features are decidedly masculine with wavy brown hair that he usually keeps combed back and not much more. His eyes are dark brown and deep-set with a slightly overhanging brow. He has a sweet, friendly smile and generally looks cheerful unless suffering from insomnia at the time. He always looks tired because he usually is or has overslept. Most of the time, his clothing is slapdash and simple just because he's usually in a rush to catch up. When he has time, he is very neat and put together. He's 5'8" so might consider himself a little pocket-sized but he is decidedly fit and well-muscled.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: He always wears a silver, thorned bracelet which is enchanted to become a sword - a gift from a fairy.


MAGIC:
Iron Stomach (Natural): Because his grandmother was an ogress, he can eat pretty much anything without harm. His whole digestive system is very tough from the teeth down. Poisons and magic still affect him but he has chomped down glass and nails just to mess with people.
Minor Ogre Physiology (natural): He's a bit stronger than someone at peak human performance and doesn't exhaust easily unless he's on the shitty side of his sleep cycle. He can also take a beating and keep on ticking - not unable to feel pain and certainly possible to injure, he can just ignore it for a bit longer than a normal person until his body gives out.
Sleep Disorders (Curse): Bastien's sleep schedule is complicated and severely inconsistent. At entirely random, he might suffer from multiple nights of insomnia or he might fall asleep for twenty hours at a time. Even if he gets up and goes to the lavatory or anything like that, he'll still be asleep and he won't remember it. He often has trouble making schedules or concentrating because of this and can end up particularly irritable.
Gifts of the Fairies (Gifts):

'Beauty': His attractive appearance (all personal attractions considered) was bestowed first, generally giving him an aura of pleasantness to be around.

Kindness: He was granted a natural inclination to be gentle and thoughtful above all else. Not so great for a military-based kingdom and has made some of his agemates accuse him of being boring and predictable.

Graceful: Bastien has a natural balance and lack of clumsiness. He's also a very good dancer. Being from a military-based kingdom, he uses this more in combat training than flitting about a ballroom. He also uses it in a 'parkour' sense, though he doesn't know the term.

Man-At-Arms: The fairy that gave him this gift called it 'understanding' and his parents didn't know what that meant until he began training. Bastien has a natural talent for weaponry. It only takes him a few hours to become proficient in the use of a weapon. While mastery takes a much longer time, he has a natural kickstart to get there. The fairy that gave him this gift is the same one that gave him the enchanted bracelet.

It would not be out of line to suggest that Bastien is... soft. And it is a matter of opinion whether that is meant in a good way or a bad way. Although he can be violent and warlike when it's required of him, he would prefer a life of gentility. He's the kind of person that captures a spider in a cup to release it outside and would take the time to nurse a baby squirrel. This wars against the requirements of a prince to hunt but he recognizes the difference between killing for sport and killing for sustenance - he only does the latter when it can be helped. He takes his time when doing things and considers all the options as carefully as he can with the information provided. If conflict can be avoided, he would prefer it but he's not the type to back down from a challenge either.

Bastien loves people, genuinely, and enjoys to be in groups even if he isn't the most talkative all the time. He just likes the energy though he can be particularly excitable when things are shiny and brand new. When he is in that excitable mood, he talks a mile a minute and can get a little bouncy. But he tries very hard not to forget his manners and good form is more important than anything else. As is propriety. Therefore, he is rather naive. He can't be around animals and not know... things... but he doesn't recognize flirtation and wouldn't even know how to begin it. Handholding with someone you're not courting sounds particularly scandalous.

Because of his sleep disorders, his brain is frazzled, to say the least. He can be very forgetful at times and has trouble concentrating on occasion. When he's in the middle of a long sleep, he still might get up and do something like go to the bathroom or eat, but he's genuinely asleep while doing it and doesn't remember. During an insomnia attack, the longer he's awake, the more irritable he gets and the more likely it becomes that he'll snap. It's extremely out of character for him and he's almost immediately apologetic but he can't help it. It can cause him to be overemotional as well as he'll just desperately want to sleep but can't.

history

After all the troubles his mother and father had getting settled in the Kingdom of Thorns reborn, from intruders to the Queen Mother attempting to eat Briar-Rose and her and Prince Phillipe's two children, they had settled down and began rebuilding their kingdom. Although behind the times, they built their military up to keep their kingdom defended and began to reinsert themselves into the world - first with the crown princess Aurore and then with Prince Jour. They did not expect to have to do it all over again with another son.

Sébastien was a surprise but as was tradition, his birth was celebrated with a great feast and gifts from the local fairies. The king and queen were very careful with their invitations as they had been for Aurore and Jour. He grew up a gentle, inquisitive boy with an easy bond with most people of the court from the highest-ranking to the lowest servant. His soft nature made it very clear that he was not ever expected to be king nor was he expected to lead the armies. But it did mean that he was rather without purpose amongst his siblings.

He was also the only one amongst his siblings to suffer ill effects from the curse his mother had been placed under. Perhaps it had been from their fairy gifts, assumed that it had long since passed by the time Bastien came around. The first time he fell asleep and couldn't be woken up caused immense panic in his family. It was only reassurance from one of their fairy allies that he wasn't cursed in the same way that calmed jangly nerves. He was up and down, his sleep cycle an absolute nightmare. His inability to focus made him lose tutors as he got older, snapping when he couldn't sleep, or making him utterly unreliable when he slept. It lightened as he got older but never fully went away.

When he was thirteen, he began training with Jour, one of his fairy gifts becoming more and more obvious as he picked up weapons and seemed to have a natural talent with them. So he would be a soldier, his father decided poorly. His mother suggested otherwise - that he should be eventually sent to Marchen Academy to pick up weapons and training from other kingdoms. But due to his kindly, innocent nature, neither of his parents told him of their plan. When Bastien turned eighteen, they brought up the opportunity to meet people from other kingdoms, make new friends, learn new things... His excitement made his mother feel guilty at the deception but his father held it up. It was like sending a sweet bunny out to be eaten by foxes and wolves.

Anything to bring their kingdom back to its former glory.

TRIVIA:

→ His grandmother, the Queen Mother, was an ogress who regularly consumed human flesh and tried to eat her own (older) grandchildren and Bastien's mother.
→ Bastien wears his mirror in a locket around his neck so he doesn't lose it.
→ He has a young French spaniel named Florian that follows him everywhere. Along with being a fantastic hunting dog and companion, Florian can sense when Bastien is about to descend into a sleep episode and guide him to bed. If he's already asleep, Florian can wake Bastien up enough to get him to sleepwalk to his bedroom.

PLOT IDEAS

→ Bastien has been sent to the academy under the pretense of making friends in other kingdoms and forging alliances. His parents secretly wish to use his talents for weaponry to pick up new skills and armaments to bring to their kingdom. Imagine how sad he'd be if he found out.
→ He is a sweet, innocent babu who thinks handholding is very forward. Don't hurt him. Or do.
→ Sleep disorder shenanigans in either direction?
