Being born to a mother who hid her magic from her muggle husband was an event that would ripple through Minerva's life. Her upbringing in Scotland was traditional of that of a farmer's daughter, and she thrived in the great outdoors. Minerva showed magical outbursts from a young age, unable to control such things. In the early years, these went unnoticed by her father but brought her mother great anxiety. Despite this, her mother went on to have two other children, and even from an early age, Minerva helped to conceal the magical outbursts from her younger siblings. However, this secret could not remain so forever and her father was eventually told. Due to the International Statute of Secrecy this meant that the family still had to conceal their magic amongst the muggles they lived around. This was a stifling environment for a child who was naturally curious about all things. Hogwarts Upon arrival at Hogwarts, she truly flourished being able to showcase her skills. She was sorted into Gryffindor and grew some strong and steadfast friendships during this time. By the end of her seventh year, she had risen to the top of her class after achieving near perfect results in her OWLs and NEWTs. She had also been made Head Girl due to her leadership skills. Her only regret of this time was that she did not take the time to have more fun--especially in terms of Quidditch. While she likely would not have made the Gryffindor team, she watched every game with eagerness and developed a true passion for the game. Post-Hogwarts Minerva's life after Hogwarts was turbulent to say the least. She had taken a position in the Ministry's department of Law Enforcement. However before the contract commenced, she decided to spend one last summer in her muggle hometown. It was during this time that she was swept into a whirlwind romance with a muggle, and it seemed history would be repeating itself. Dougal McGregor proposed early on in their courtship and shile she accepted, the next day she knew she couldn't live a life without magic. She went to him that day and told him she had changed her mind, leaving for London without an excuse and never seeing him again. She tried to throw herself into her life at the Ministry but she soon became irritated with the bureaucracy. She was a skilled witch in many areas however there was little satisfaction in the job. It was only after a discussion with Albus Dumbledore that she realised she could pursue her passions of Transfiguration at the school. She took a position, taking over the class Transfiguration class when Albus became Headmaster. It was here she truly thrived. She enjoyed fostering talent and keeping children in line, all while surrounding herself with a subject she had a true interest in. During her time at Hogwarts, she mentored many students on a personal as well as academic level. She had always been emotionally invested in those around her, and she has been known to cross the boundaries of her position in a motherly fashion. This has shown in her relationship with Severus since his appointment at the school. While she is not maternal in the same respect as Molly Weasley, there is no doubt she cares for her students and goes the extra mile when the situation arises. During the war, while Minerva did not join the Order of the Phoenix, she did work for the Ministry to spy on known Death Eaters in her cat form. She may have escaped the war unscathed, but she lost her brother as well as the Dougal McGregor who was killed in a random Death Eater attack alongside his wife and children. These were both heavy blows to Minerva and she struggled to overcome the guilt of the latter, wondering whether she could have said Dougal if she had married him. Albus was the only one who knew of how these deaths impacted her life though she kept a strong face for her students. Minerva would never have been considered lucky in love. Her former boss, Elphinstone Urquart, had proposed several times over the years (once embarrassingly in a crowded tea-shop) but she had still been in love with Dougal and declined each time. It was only after his death that some closure finally came with her feelings, and she accepted a proposal a few years later and they were married in 1982. She was content in their relationship, splitting her time between Hogwarts and their cottage in Hogsmeade. He never tried to restrict her career, and they enjoyed their life together with the occasional visit from her nieces and nephews. Heartache came three years into their marriage when Elphinstone died from a Venomous Tentacula. The grief she felt at this loss was crushing. She couldn't bring herself to stay at the cottage they owned and moved into Hogwarts following his death. As she did with past tragedies, she threw herself back into her work and only those closest to her knew of the battles she struggled with. Still to this day, she has a cigar on his birthday and far too much whiskey. As of last month, she was awarded the Order of Merlin (First Class) for her work in Transfiguration and contributions to education. She has hushed the whole thing up and does not wish to attend the ceremony. Don't leave your house after curfew. Neighbour acting fishy? Report to the Auror Department. Losing time? Report to a Healer. Report, report, report. Everyone was on edge--even her purist parents' love of their luxurious lifestyles overshadowed their prejudices. They had always been just purist enough to piss her off but not quite to ever do any real damage. At least, that's how Dorcas had seen it. Now she wasn't as naive to think such things. It was no longer acceptable to band about such things over a social gathering and call it hypothetical. The one good thing to come from the war was that her parents had learnt to clamp their hatred down. They weren't jumping into the Order or volunteering their many family homes as sanctuary, but they were at least neutral. A small mercy. While her friends had banded together and she felt as if they were making some progress under Dumbledore's organisation, other areas of her life had not held so steadfast. Marlene, for instance. Even to this day, Dorcas couldn't quite pin point how things had turned to utter shit between them. They had always argued--always been too stubborn to back down from a conflict (friends often having to intervene). But they always made up. Something always slipped into place and they were back to living in each other's pockets. That hadn't happened. Six months had passed and they were little more than passing ships in Order meetings, neither women being willing to back down from whatever stance they had taken during the argument. Not that Dorcas could remember what that particular argument had been about. For all these reasons, she had not been especially impressed with Dumbledore had owled her regarding potential information uncovered by Miss Marlene McKinnon. Dumbledore had always been a meddling sort. Hell, she had seen that in their final year when he had elected James Bloody Potter as Head Boy. She stared down at the parchment, chucking the bird some stray seeds, before begrudgingly scrawling out a message to arrange a meeting with Marlene. Somewhere private without being too close. It wasn't exactly an easy combination to arrange in a war time setting. A Muggle park had been her final choice, late afternoon as the children had begun to make their way home. She was positioned at the highest point, on a bench, and fairly confident in her choice. Wizarding locations were too risky of late, and businesses were harder to escape from than the open air. It would do. |
