APPEARANCE: Ever since puberty Oliver had always been described as 'burly'. Indeed, at 6'2", with his broad, square shoulders, large chest and equally muscular arms and legs Oliver looks as solid as a brick wall. Still, he moves surprisingly fast, both in the air and on the ground. His hair is chestnut brown with a hint of red with a slight curl on the ends. Oliver has eyes in a shade of warm chocolate which stand out on his expressive face. A near permanent smile is plastered on his face (except during matches, when he's frowning in frustration with a furrowed brow). Oliver's sense of style would be classified as 'casually put together'. Having an elegant wife from a high society family, he likes to keep himself looking presentable but honestly doesn't spend too much time on it. His signature look would be a pair of fitted jeans, and a long-sleeved shirt rolled up to show his well-built arms (something the Witch Weekly likes to comment on).. |

LIKES:Quidditch; Fitness; Being outside; Flying; His family; Cooking; Hanging out at the pub; Large social events; long bubble baths; fans; sweets; Scotland DISLIKES:Lemons; rude reporters; disrespecting Quidditch; cheating on a game; sneakiness; media manipulation; invasion of his wife's privacy; losing; glory-hounds; his little brother being upset, assuming he’s a dumb jock FIRST IMPRESSIONS:Gregarious, carefree, larger than life OVERALL PERSONALITY:If you look up the definition of Quidditch Fanatic you'd find Oliver's picture. Some joke his first word was 'quaffle', while others say his obsession was bred into his genes from the Wood legacy. Either way, Oliver was exposed to the sport before he was born and remains tightly bound to this day. Step into his flat and you'll find framed posters of iconic matches, books crammed onto the shelves ranging in subject from the history of Quidditch to in depth physics of Quaffle throwing to autobiographies of famous players. He can quote nearly any statistic at the drop of a hat and will fiercely defend this knowledge. Oliver lives and breathes Quidditch. There are other aspects to him, though, that rarely shine through. Like the fact he is very into maintaining his body's peak physical condition and enjoys reading in depth muggle medical articles on physiology. He loves muggle action films and isn't completely terrible at wizard chess. He is an excellent cook and enjoys baking, especially for his wife, as well as very relaxing bubble baths. He can tell you about every running trail in London, and has recently taken up surfing. Few see this side of Oliver, however. Perhaps it is due to the fact most people don't take him very seriously. His warm, open personality cause people to gravitate to him. Most of these people really only hang around because Oliver is a fan of buying rounds of pints and they can brag about hanging out with one of England's rising Quidditch stars. Sure, deep down it bothers him, but Oliver knows that he has a small set of friends who he can always count on and and wife who will always be there. They know the real him. A negative side of Oliver is his tendency to be selfish. He doesn't act selfish out of spite or even consciously, it is simply the fact he, being the middle child, is absolutely terrified of mediocrity and feels immense pressure to be the absolute very best in whatever it is he sets out to do. Because of this others - his wife included - tend to fall to the wayside as his drive to be the best overrides everything else in his life. Oliver is surrounded by the absolute best team Puddlemere has to offer: from his agent to his PR rep to his publicist and beyond - They have seen the potential to make him not only into a phenominal player but a easily marketable product for the team. because of this he is a bit out of touch with the real world. He doesn’t mean to be, but having been coddled his whole life by his parents, driven hard to achieve the best and then snapped up by Puddlemere and kept in a protective bubble does make one a bit out of touch. Oliver firmly believes in fairness and hard work. He could probably get away with murder and let Puddlemere's PR team deal with it, but his consciousness just wouldn't feel right. His strong sense of right and wrong has won him a lot of respect both on and off the field. He demands a lot from his teammates and moreso himself. There is no 'I' in team, and if you cheekily respond 'but there is a ‘me' you'll get a serious lecture on the spirit of teamwork. While Oliver tends to act first and apologize later, he always means well. He's been likened to a big, dog who is full of boundless energy, wanting live his life to the fullest and love everyone. |
HISTORY: Oliver Wood was born in July of 1976, the second child to Angus and Penelope Wood. Oliver had always been a rough-and-tumble type of child, laughing with glee as his father tossed him from high places or zoomed around the Scottish countryside as fast as his trusty Shooting Star would carry them. Angus loved all his children, but he bonded the most with Oliver; especially when it came to Quidditch. Angus retired from his promising career as a Beater for Pride of Portree to help raise his family. However, he pushed his children into Quidditch and upon seeing the natural talent Oliver possessed decided to live through his son's potential success. Oliver's childhood was one of strict scheduling and intense practices, though not an unhappy one. He was doted and fussed over by Penelope while Angus used his money and connections to ensure Oliver received the best training, which left both with little time for the rest of the family. It was no surprise Oliver wowed Charlie Weasley during Quidditch tryouts in his second year, swiftly promoted to co-captain by his third and fully took over upon Charlie's graduation. Despite his open and friendly nature, Oliver didn't really have many friends at school - he instead worked tirelessly to draft new Quidditch strategies and keep his grades just good enough to keep both his father and McGonagall placated. Summers offered no break, as he spent them at elite training camps meant for recruited players where he would be pushed beyond his physical limits. Suffering from humiliation of losing the House Cup nearly drove mad Oliver by his obsession with winning in his final year no matter what the costs. The desire to win consumed Oliver like a disease: he couldn't sleep, eating was out of the question, and most days didn't bother to show up to class. Eventually Professor McGonagall criticized him for being selfish and caring only about winning, a lecture that should have shaken some sense into Oliver... and it did in some ways, though it didn't smother the raging fire to win. It took pushing his body to the absolute limit, risking illness, sanity and taking a handful of bludgers to the gut but Oliver finally accomplished his goal: seeing his team win the Quidditch House Cup. Of course, Oliver would continue on the Quidditch path post-graduation. No one was surprised when the offers flooded in and he chose Puddlemere United straight out of Hogwarts. He'd barely been home a week before heading to their training camp in Dorset. Despite being placed as a reserve Keeper, Oliver trained with the same focus and dedication as a starting player. Detractors would write his classically handsome features were winning him favor with the team's female administration, and his father's ties and money would push him further than he deserved, but Oliver knew better than that. He refused to take the bait and let anything stop him from achieving his dream of becoming Puddlemere's full-time Keeper, captain and eventually captain of a World Cup winning team. Oliver's rise to Quidditch stardom was as fast as his flying, though he didn't let that stop him from returning to Hogwarts upon hearing the news his school was under attack. Oliver would never dare to say he fought anywhere near as bravely or as valiantly as some of his former teachers and schoolmates; despite being brave he could never have matched the courage of so many who gave their lives. He didn't receive many physical wounds, but deep mental scars. If he was honest with himself this might have been the turning point when Oliver's trips to the pub became less about social gatherings and more about forgetting, but that truth is long buried. Little Collin Creevey's death affected him far more than Oliver realized. At first Oliver attempted to quit Quidditch in a show of solidarity. This, of course, was blocked by his parents. Angus reasoned with him to not throw away a lifetime of work. Using the suspension of Quidditch Oliver focused on trying to make sense of the world that was slowly rebuilding itself. Following what would have been the '98-99' Quidditch season, Puddlemere's Keeper - Eren Lowry - announced his retirement and granted Oliver the honor of taking up the empty position. With the new season in 1999 and the Ministry's desire to force life back to normal and distract from societies problems, Oliver’s schedule became packed with press conferences, abroad friendly matches, interviews, and the entire gauntlet of a media circus. Life was going perfectly until the curse hit. The world was upside down once more, and the curse seemed to miss Oliver. He was surprised and secretly relieved when the first round of marriages passed him by - despite that longing to have a family he wasn't really ready. However, the following year he was arranged to Astoria Greengrass. At first, Oliver had his reservations. Whille not part of the Scared 28, the Wood family had been prominent members of wizarding high society with few pairings of muggleborn or halfblood family members. He had heard of the Greengrass family and their reputation, though was pleasantly surprised to find Astoria surprisingly warm and kind. It didn't take long for him to realize that he loved her and was satisfied with the match; though he's not exactly ready to dive head in to the family man image, as his career goals still overshadow everything else in his life.. |
PREFERRED NAME: J PLAYED BY:Theo James CONTACT: http://users.insanejournal.com/olliewoo TIMEZONE:CST/ GMT - 6 FIRST PERSON SAMPLE: Been looking at houses the past couple of months and trying to imagine what the garden will look like when covered in bits of leaves and winter frost has been surprisingly more difficult than I thought. Hard to imagine anything not dead and grey at the moment. Also, anyone know of a good place to get a dog? I'm thinking a golden retriever, or a nice Lab. Or any dog [Warded to Helen] Hey, the offer for that sparring lesson still available? |
