Enzo has been shaped by his experiences. He fell ill and was turned into a vampire, his sire promising him a family before abandoning him. The newly turned vampire had to make his way in this world not quite understanding what he needed for survival. But he didn’t give up and slowly adjusted to his new powers and life.

Then the Augustines kidnapped vampires. Because they wanted to torture and study them. Vampires were given a tiny amount of blood, not enough to sate their thirst and certainly not enough to be at full strength, but enough to keep them alive. Enzo hates what happens, loathes it. Feels like he’s reached the end of his life. But the thing about Enzo? He doesn’t lose his shreds of hope or dark humour regarding his imprisonment (“Seventy years in a cage…you’d think I’d learn to pick a lock by now”). That doesn’t mean he doesn’t feel anger or resentment, especially towards Damon whom he feels abandoned him (which he kind of did). Enough anger that he wants revenge on Damon, but he still feels loyalty towards his friend.

This loyalty is shown again and again. He wants to help Damon escape their entrapment. When the woman he loves, Maggie, keeps seeing him in a cage, Enzo compels her to forget him. Enzo can’t stand that Stefan gives up on searching for Damon. Enough that he uses violence against Stefan. Because he won’t give up on bringing back Damon. Damon is his friend, end of story.

Enzo may have gone slightly mad from captivity, but he hides it well with dark humour. When he and Care go on a research mission, Caroline seems resigned to the fact they can’t enter the house because their lead, a witch, owns it. Enzo’s solution? Throw a blade at her head, instantaneously killing her. Caroline asks, in desperation, “Why did you do that? She was our only lead.” Enzo, “Exactly. I’m a murderous vampire. SURPRISE.”

He does have a soft side, though, one we don’t often get to see, but that exists, and a charming “Hello Gorgeous” with a smirk side. When he and Caroline are talking at one point he mentions how she reminds him of Maggie. Caroline makes a snarky response about how Maggie what? Made him want to be a better man? “No, she reminded me I was good all along.” When he and Bonnie fall in love, Enzo admits to her that he didn’t think a Higher Power or whomever would allow him to die without falling in true love. Because at the end of it, although Enzo acts without thinking at times, he is actually a loyal and good vampire.
