Character Information
Name: Rodian Romanovich Raskolnikov
Nicknames: Rodya
Age: 23
Fandom: Crime and Punishment, the 2002 TV adaption
Point In Fandom Taken From: Just before he chooses to hand himself in for his crimes.

Personality: "I’ve known Rodion for a year and a half: sullen, gloomy, arrogant, proud; recently (and maybe much earlier) insecure and hypochondriac. Magnanimous and kind. Doesn’t like voicing his feelings, and would rather do something cruel than speak his heart out in words. At times, however, he’s not hypochondriac at all, but just inhumanly cold and callous, as if there really were two opposite characters in him, changing places with each other. At times he’s terribly taciturn! He’s always in a hurry, always too busy, yet he lies there doing nothing. Not given to mockery, and not because he lacks sharpness but as if he had no time for such trifles. Never hears people out to the end. Is never interested in what
interests everyone else at a given moment. Sets a terribly high value on himself and, it seems, not without a certain justification." - Razumikhin

Rodian is a complex man, his personality taking on dramatic shifts and changes that may appear manic. He is in a constant inner battle with his opinions and philosophies, their aggressive and cold stance struggling eternally with his basic human guilt. He is prone to random acts of kindness, whether they are through guilt or otherwise. When he is feeling guilty and is confronted intentionally or otherwise, he has been known in the past to simply faint, unable to cope with the pressure he has put on himself through the weight of his conscience. He is not one to boast but will defend his written work if pushed to do so.

Not only is he complex but he is rather unique. Compassionately altruistic conflicting with his self righteous egoism, he is the extreme of every major personality swing. His philosophies and personal morals play a major part in his personality too. He believes himself to be one of the extraordinary ones, one of the few who are capable of breaking all manner of laws, without guilt or feeling. Those who would be raised on pedestals years after they are dead and gone. But even with that belief comes inner conflict and doubt, worry and panic. Nervous reactions, odd behaviors through guilt.

Aside from his problems, he is a very caring man. Particularly with women. He does what he can to make sure that his Mother and Sister are not cheated, and does what he can to make sure that Sonya and her family do not have to rely on her selling her body. He tries to save her from falling further into sin and depravity. As for his own personal belief and lifestyle? His poor living conditions remain constant and unchanging. But his belief and faith, changes from moment to moment, all intertwining with his own personal guilt and denial.

Brief History: Rodian was born in the 1840's and raised with his Mother and Father, and one sister. He wasn't raised in a rich family, but they made do. When the Father died, Rodian took on the male role in his household. He went on, in his late teens to Saint Petersburgh where he studied law.

Unfortunately, he became too poor, as did many others, and could not continue his studies. To help earn money, he had an article published in the Periodical Leader. It was a rather controversial essay about the criminal mind. But the very fact that it was printed helped boost the young Russian's confidence not only in himself but his ideas. His written work and morals. He survived by living in a tiny little garret. He could barely pay for his own food or rent, but when he was poorly or hadn't eaten, the landlady would have her servant send down food to him.

Deciding he wanted to put his theory into practice, he plotted and planned to kill the pawnbroker, Alyona Ivanovna. As far as he was concerned, she wasn't going to be missed. He could kill her, take some of the wealth for himself and carry on with his life as if it were nothing. He took an axe hidden in his long coat, and used it to kill her. He brutally butchered her, caving her head in enough to make her suffer before ending her life.

Unfortunately, and unexpectedly, the pawnbroker's half sister, Lizaveta walked into the room and saw the dead woman. Seeing no other choice, Rodian killed her too. After taking a small amount of money and a few items, he ran from the scene. No one saw him and no one knew. He took the items and burried them under a rock in a more secluded part of town, hidden in the rubble, and the rest, he carried.

But his own guilt followed his every step. That he could not shake, even through his own moral arguments and denial. His behaviour became more erratic and strange whenever the pawnbroker was mentioned. He fell in and out of a feverish state over the space of a few days, and all the while his dear old friend, Razumikhin worried about him.

One day when he was out wandering the streets, he came across a man who had been hit by a carriage. He was bleeding badly and dying. When he was brought into his families home, he passed away. Raskolnikov, seeing that the family would suffer without any money, gave away all his wealth to one of the children. One of the eldest, Sonya, who Rodian had met before killing the pawnbroker, had been forced into prostitution to support her family. By giving their family the money, it also allowed her a means in which to stop her sinful ways. One of the children offered to say a prayer for Rodian, and heart heavy with guilt, he left the buiding.

To make matters all the more painful, his Mother and Sister had arrived to visit him. His sister had come bearing the news that she was to marry. His sister had left her job and the man she was to marry, a man named Svidrigailov who wanted to marry her simply for her beauty, and had recieved a proposal from a man named Pyotr Petrovich Luzhin who was willing to marry her in order to help her and her Mother financially. His Mother and Sister had come to Saint Petersborough not only to meet Pyotr, but ask if Rodian approved or not. Rodian did not approve. He was approached by his sisters former lover, Svidrigailov. He had offered 10,000 Rubels for her not to marry and he had another 3000 Rubels to offer from his wife's will, that she had apparently left her. Rodian went to dinner with his Mother, his sister and Pyotr where he made his feelings and the proposal know. His sister rejected both and Pyotr was turned away.

All the while, a detective named Porfiry was working on the murder case. He had been watching Rodian for quite sometime and all the while, he seemed to know it was him but didn't have the evidence to ie him to the scene of the crime. Another man came bursting into the office, escorted my police, confessing that he was the one who murderd the pawnbroker and her sister. But Rodian's nerves were wearing thin and he was becoming more and more nervous. He wrestled with the idea of confessing but couldn't bring himself to. Finally he went to Sonya and confessed to her. Unaware that Svidrigailov has moved in next door. He overheard the whole conversation and confronted Rodian. He threatened to use the testimonial against him, and in turn confessed that he too had murdered.

Feeling even more pressure, Rodian went to Sonya. She tried to talk him into giving himself over. Porfiry also pointed out that his sentence would be reduced if he simply came clean. Sonya gave him her cross to carry, hoping he would confess. As he carried it out into the street, muttering to himself, he reached the bridge... and dissapeared from the crowd.
