Fun Facts!
one random fact. He has a very broad knowledge of mid-late Twencen pop music, because his ex-girlfriend was fascinated by the time period and listened almost exclusively to classics like the Beatles, Elvis, New Kids on the Block and Take That, and that's what he got to listen to, all the time. worst fear. Horses and things that look like horses (donkeys, ponies, zebras etc). It is stupid and pointless and he knows this. their secret desire. He used to want to go back to being human. Now he wants Alchemax to shock off and leave him (and Downtown. Mainly Downtown, actually) alone.
Miguel is an intensely private man, and not just because he's Spider-man. His childhood was dominated by the man he thought was his father, George O'Hara, an alcoholic with a very bad temper who regularly physically abused his wife Conchata and his eldest son, Miguel. This only stopped for Miguel when he was sent to Boarding School. His parents got divorced after that, but the abuse his mother suffered was more than enough to require her to live in a mental health facility, even now, years after George’s death. His mother makes no secret of the fact that she much prefers Miguel's younger brother, Gabriel, to him, often saying it directly to his face. “Why can't you be more like your brother?” is a question he is more than fed up with. Gabriel is an artist, a sensitive soul who only wants to help people, Conchata says, and Miguel is nothing like that, apparently. Miguel believes that his mother hates him, because he reminds her of his father. He also thinks that his brother might not be such a ‘sensitive soul’ if he’d been the brother that had to protect people from a very young age. His fiancée, Dana D'Angelo, left him to date his boss (and actual father) Tyler Stone before being killed by Venom. He has learned that if you can't trust your own family, you might as well not bother trusting anyone and do what you like.
In fact, the only being that Miguel trusts is Lyla (LYrate Lifeform Approximation), his holo-agent. She knows everything about Miguel, including who his alter-ego is, and is programmed to be utterly loyal to him. He encourages her to develop her own algorithms and decision-making protocols, and she is dangerously close to thinking for herself.
Miguel is not exactly a people-person, although not because he's shy. Quite the opposite, in fact. He's confident, often over-confident to the point that people don't like him, or he'll come out with some blunt, smart-arse, or sarcastic comment. He’s an asshole, basically. He’s spent so long acting like a jerk that it’s just how he is now, but at least people don’t want to get close to him. He tends to lose himself in work and science when things get too much, rather than deal with stupid feelings. He doesn't always “get” feelings or understand them, whether they're other people's feelings or his own, and finds it much easier to push them to one side or simply ignore them altogether until everything implodes in his head. He has seriously considered suicide on a number of different occassions (most notably straight after the incident where he gained his spider-abilities, and when he discovered who his biological father was) but has never properly acted on it. He more than understands anger and hate, though, and often reacts badly to things out of frustration, both as himself and as Spider-man.
His inability to trust people and tendency to be a bit-head aside, Miguel can 'click' with people every so often, and they get far closer than most. He struggles to make friends even now, but once he decides someone is worth it, he'll look out for them as much as he can. His family does tend to take advantage of this. His ma can barely stand to look at him some days, but he's still the one she goes to for help or asks to borrow money from, and she knows he'll give her the money. It doesn't ever stop her from telling him he's a shocking awful person, though. He's constantly getting his baby brother out of trouble and keeping him safe (why change the habit of a lifetime, eh?) and Gabri's various girlfriends, because he's "Hot Stuff" at Alchemax and can get things done.
Miguel is a genius, and attended Alchemax's School for Gifted Youngsters as a young boy right up until he was hired by Alchemax. That said, no matter how book-smart young Miguel was, Tyler Stone was still able to manipulate him quite easily - a person's family standing was determined by how well they conformed to what Alchemax wanted, so when Miguel was chosen to attend the school, his family were moved to a brand new upper-class apartment with all sorts of privileges. Obviously, if Miguel acted up or failed at school, his family would be moved to much worse housing and lose their status, and Stone played heavily on the fact that eight-year-old Miguel knew what George O'Hara would do to his mom and little brother if that happened. This manipulation worked on Miguel right up until his accident, still believing that he should be doing whatever Alchemax required of him no matter how much he mouthed off about it, and it still took time to work it out of his head.
A geneticist by training, Miguel headed up the Corporate Raiders programme, which was intended to create a strike force of genetically-altered humans controlled and run by Alchemax. Scientifically, it was fascinating, and the advances in the field of genetics that he and his team were coming up with were astounding. Morally, though, he knew deep down that it was wrong - Tyler Stone wanted it, so it couldn't be good, after all, but it was what Alchemax wanted and it was his job to provide that. Whilst genetics and biology in general are what he's most interested in, he is also very good with computers, capable of hacking into the servers at work without being detected, and is skilled at designing, creating and building his own machinery and technology.
Miguel now tries very hard to do the right thing. Ever since his “accident”, where he gained his spider-powers, he's become more and more aware of how badly Alchemax treats the people of Nueva York, especially those who live in the area known as Downtown. At first, he wanted nothing to do with the place, or the new powers he'd gained, but over time he began to use his new abilities to help protect the people from Alchemax. The company sees him as a threat, and he's more than fine with that since if they're dealing with him, they aren't picking on Downtowners. He has a lot of atoning to do for all the crap Alchemax made him do in the past, after all.
Aside from the fact that he can use his spider powers to shock things up for Alchemax, he is genuinely beginning to enjoy parts of them. Not everything is great. He has destroyed more than enough clothes, bedsheets, water beds, walls, and throats flesh with his talons, and he kind of hates his fangs at times, but when he gets to glide through the air or pinball through the various buildings of Nueva York? He loves that part. As long as there aren't flyboys chasing after him. Although telling Alchemax to go get shocked is also pretty great.
Appearance & Abilities
DISTINGUISHING PHYSICAL TRAITS:
When Miguel's DNA was rewritten, his body underwent a number of changes other than his eyes (see Enhanced Senses, below). He has spinnerets in his forearms that allow him to fire organic webs from the top of his wrists. If pressure is applied to his forearms, it can cause him to release webbing without meaning to, and if his wrists are damaged or blocked in some way, he is unable to use his webs. He has inch-long talons on his fingertips and toetips that stand proud - their default state is to be out, so Miguel has had to learn how to control them. They fold down automatically if he touches his own skin. They are capable of slicing through metal, stone, plastic and flesh. These are how Miguel climbs buildings; he isn't 'sticky' like other spiders, he has to use his strength and his talons to climb and hang from things. He has venom glands and his canines are quite pronounced. His venom temporarily paralyses whoever he bites. He can't retract his fangs, and gets self-conscious about them at times, so people think he's mumbling.
He is NOT 6'9 like in Across the Spiderverse, though. He's a perfectly respectable 5'10.
UNIQUE ABILITIES:
Genius-level Intellect. Miguel is a highly skilled geneticist and gifted with genius-level intelligence. Although his speciality is Genetics (and Biology in general), he is capable of designing and building all kinds of gadgets and machines, and he's good enough with computers that he's hacked into servers belonging to Tony Stark, Doctor Doom and Reed Richards without being detected. He is bilingual, and speaks Spanish and English fluently.
Management. Although his people-skills are somewhat abrasive, Miguel has plenty of experience of successfully running a large engineering/science department, keeping budgets on track and making sure that projects stay within schedules and on target.
Enhanced Strength, Speed, and Agility. Miguel is capable of lifting up to 10-15 tons, and the strength in his legs means he can leap maybe 30 feet up into the air. His speed is also greatly enhanced, allowing him to dodge gunfire at close range and sometimes move fast enough that he leaves a "body double" behind for a few seconds. He's able to perform complicated acrobatic and gymnastic moves that no normal human could manage, and it's almost impossible for him to lose his balance. These abilities are instinctual, due to his re-written DNA.
Increased Stamina and Durability. Miguel's body is now designed to deal with all kinds of things. He doesn't tire easily. He's capable of withstanding insane levels of g-force while webswinging, and can cope with all kinds of impact trauma - he once fell hundreds of meters from the ground floor of Nueva York to the bottom of Downtown after being shot by dozens of Public Eye flyboys, and managed to get himself to a doctor. Superficial stab wounds and cuts will heal within half an hour or so. His metabolism allows him to heal faster than a regular human, but he doesn't have a superhuman healing factor like Wolverine.
Enhanced Senses. Miguel doesn't have a Spider-sense. He has enhanced vision and hearing instead, although his eyesight is far more enhanced than his hearing. He can see in complete darkness, he can see into the infra-red range of light, and can clearly see things at a far greater distance than normal humans. He can also see things that are moving at great speed without any blurring. Due to all these enhancements, though, he is extremely light-sensitive and has to wear tinted glasses at all times or he would suffer from migraines or even blindness if the lights are bright enough. His irises are red, and if he "zooms in" on something, his eyes can become completely red (or white, both are seen in canon) with no visible irises or pupils. His hearing is enhanced enough that he can hear people breathing in the next room.
History
Warnings: Domestic Abuse, Child Abuse, Non-consensual drug use/addiction.
Born in Nueva York in 2071, Miguel grew up with his mom Conchata, his younger brother Gabriel and his abusive father George O'Hara. His mom is Mexican and his dad was Irish. Miguel spent many years protecting Gabe from their father's fists, but couldn't always keep his mom safe. He has hated George O'Hara for as long as he can remember.
He was a child prodigy, and was enrolled at the Alchemax School for Gifted Youngsters when he was about eight or nine, where his skill with biology, genetics especially, flourished. Eventually, he wound up as head of the Genetics program with Alchemax, tasked with creating super-powered soldiers through genetic modification. However, where Miguel wanted to take things slowly and safely (these would be human beings undergoing the procedures, after all), Alchemax simply wanted results as quickly as possible.
When a human test subject died horribly during the first experiment, Miguel tried to resign from the program, but his boss tricked him into taking Rapture, a drug which genetically bonded to the user and was controlled by Alchemax; unless Miguel remained with the company, receiving legal doses of the drug, his boss would be forced to assume that he was getting his Rapture from the black market and could easily have him arrested. Sent home to "enjoy" the dose, he fought it the whole time and experienced all kinds of awful hallucinations. Because of this, he accidentally lashed out and hit his fiancée across the face, thinking that she was one of the things he'd been hallucinating. As he became more lucid, that was the thing that made him decide he was going to beat the addiction or die trying.
Miguel remembered that his original genetic code was stored in Alchemax's computer's databanks and decided that it would be worth the risk to sneak back into the labs that night, in order to use the genetic modification program to rewrite his DNA back to how it originally was. The process was sabotaged by his co-worker, Aaron Delgato, in an attempt to kill him (the incident would be covered up as an accident). Miguel somehow survived the process. His DNA was spliced with the genes of a spider causing him to gain a number of powers and abilities, though he lost his addiction to Rapture.
Immediately afterwards, Aaron discovered what had happened to Miguel, and started shooting at him despite Miguel begging him to stop, since he thought Miguel was going to kill him. After their fight caused an explosion which destroyed all the machinery and tech in the lab, Aaron almost fell off a ledge, but was caught by Miguel. However, Miguel didn’t know about his talons, which sliced into Aaron’s arm and caused him to fall to his death.
When Alchemax discovered that there was a new Spider-man, they tried to capture him, so Miguel disguised himself by wearing a costume he had worn to a Dia de los Muertos festival a few years before, comprising of a blue-black bodysuit and mask with red skull and spider designs on it. It was made from Unstable Molecule Fiber (UMF) which was handy because it didn't get damaged by Miguel's new talons on his fingers and toes. It also includes a light air foil on its back, which was gifted to him by a follower of Thor. This foil emits a low concentration of anti-gravity particles that allows Miguel to glide on currents of air.
At first, he just wanted to find a "cure" for what Delgato had done to him, but gradually, he began to realize just how bad things had become in Nueva York and he started to fight back against the megacorporations that ruled the city, becoming a hero in his own right, the first one to "return" ever since the catastrophe. This is why the Thorites refer to Spider-Man as the Harbinger of Thor.
He discovered that Tyler Stone was his biological father, and that the dose of Rapture he'd been drugged with had been a modified version that would have worn off within days. Horrified at how his life had been destroyed by the man, Miguel sunk into a depressive spiral but refused to explain anything, which caused Dana to become more and more friendly with Stone. Miguel's ex-girlfriend (and Lyla's creator), Xina Kwan, was asked to repair Lyla after a city-wide virus corrupted all sorts of systems including Holo-agents, and Xina included a programme that meant that Lyla continually insulted Dana. Dana took this as proof that Miguel and Xina had got back together, they had a massive fight and then broke up. Dana then began a relationship with Tyler Stone.
Soon enough, Xina realized something was wrong with Miguel and took him on a road trip to try and help him feel better. When they returned to Nueva York, Venom had returned. His host was Miguel's old school bully (and secretly his half-brother), Kron Stone. Venom kidnapped Dana and Xina to get at Miguel, and in the ensuing fight with Spider-Man, Dana was killed. Miguel did not deal with this very well at all.
Most recently, there have been sightings of weird anomalies around the Alchemax building. Dinosaurs and antique planes fighting each other, and the Public Eye struggling to cope until Spider-Man showed up.
