IN CHARACTER
NAME.
Eliza Winthrop.
AGE.
25.
SEXUALITY.
Heterosexual.
GENDER.
Female.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION.
Often described as having the features of a traditional English Rose with light coloured hair and her delicate features, Eliza is often regarded as quite the modest beauty within society. Not wishing to draw more attention to her then she might need to though, she tends to favour simpler designs in her attire, often in neutral shades with the occasional hint of blue (her favourite colour).
HISTORY
CHARACTER HISTORY.
If there was one thing that Eliza Winthrop was quite sure of for all her life, it was her engagement to Edwin Barrington. Their parents’ old friends, and well-respected families in the county of Northamptonshire, were keen to join their families together. In fact, it was decided much in their infancy that when Eliza turned 18, that the pair would wed. Her father being a clergyman, and his father being an owner of a sizable estate, it was always viewed to be a most advantageous marriage. Of course, as Eliza hit puberty and blossomed into a beauty within society, while the match was still viewed as advantageous on the part of her family, it was easily accepted by those around them.
Unfortunately for both, not long before they were due to wed on her 18th birthday (his 26th), Edwin was taken sick. A fever took hold of him, one from which he would never fully recover. Eliza of course still married him, feeling dutybound to fulfil the obligation to him, and the two publicly lived for a while as a married couple. Splitting their time between town and country, as Edwin grew sicker, so the amount of time that they spent in London decreased, until eventually all of their time was spent on his families estate.
Even though over the course of their marriage, his sickness had threatened to take Edwin a number of times, it was upon her 24th birthday that Edwin finally passed. With his wife sat at his bedside, he left his worldly worries behind him, and departed for the next life, one that she hoped would be full of less hurt and pain then this.
Despite the fact that his family had promised Eliza a most secure living, in death her security was somewhat less so. As was tradition, the family estate was instead turned over to his younger brother, Jasper Barrington. While his brother might have been fond of Eliza and promised her some security in a cottage on the family estate, she knew that this was not a certainty for life. So, at the urging of her parents, and against her best judgement, once an appropriate period of mourning, Eliza was sent forth to Summerview Park.
PERSONALITY.
DECISIVE
Perhaps it is a result of dealing with more in her 25 years then most would deal with in 40+ years, but Eliza has come to find herself most decisive. Without a husband well enough to call the shots, very quickly upon being wed, she found herself needing to run a household on her own, as well as care for the needs of another. While she is by no means obstinate or unbending in her opinions, she is not naïve in her decisions and has educated herself well beyond her initial station in life. As a result of being well read, she likes to think of herself as having a decent grounding to make balanced decisions in a whole series of topics. She has gone from being an innocent to the world, to a woman governed by fact and reason, unafraid of quietly and confidently standing her ground.
AGREEABLE
Another consequence of her husbands unfortunate sickness, is that Eliza has only grown in agreeableness. With her husband being sick so early in their marriage, Eliza found herself thrust forward into society. Even events that her husband was too sick to attend, Eliza’s presence was still requested due to Edwin’s family and her standing. While she is not charismatic like some of the ladies she mingles with, she likes to think that she is perfectly pleasant company. She can make pleasant conversation on a variety of topics, embroiders well, appreciates music (though she is fair on the pianoforte herself) and is light of foot when it comes to dancing.
EXTROVERTED INTROVERT
Having always been of a more modest nature, Eliza has always found it rather draining to be in society for too long. She can easily converse, and make merry with the best of them, however she finds it rather draining to be entertaining for too long. As a result of this while Edwin was alive, she would often using him as an excuse, to disappear from society for periods at a time, in order to recharge herself. As much as she might enjoy the occasional ball, Eliza much prefers one to one contact, as she finds it all together less draining.
DUTIFUL
Often to her own detriment, Eliza is nothing but dutiful to the needs of her family. When her parents announced it was their intention for her to wed Edwin, she followed this without hesitation. When Edwin fell ill, she did not think twice about caring her extremely sick and bedridden husband, without a second thought for herself. She maintained the modest estate his family had bequeathed to them upon their marriage, carefully structuring things so that it appeared that her husband was in charge of all decisions, whereas in fact it was Eliza herself whom ran it all singlehandedly. There is nothing she would not do to keep the honor of her family intact, and her family appeased.
NAÏVE
Even though there are a great many ways in which Eliza is far from innocent, when it comes to matters of the heart, she is quite naïve. Having never needed to court thanks to her parent’s arrangement when she was but an infant, Eliza is very much at a loss in the dating world. She has of course read extensively and knows how it is meant to go in literature, but real life is another thing all together. As a result of this, she is likely to be taken in by unscrupulous cads who believe her to be in receipt of a large fortune, due to her departed husbands family.
SECRETS AND GOALS
Despite being married once before, Eliza is still pure. With her husband being so sick during the duration of their marriage, he was never fit enough to consummate it.
Is a fan of rather....racy literature. Not that a polite lady such as herself would of course ever admit to such a thing, but having a life so devoid of excitement and love of a sexual nature, she has filled such wholes with her books. Knowing that this is not something particularly lady like, she takes to stashing the book she is reading at that time under her mattress, so no one would accidentally happen upon it.
Almost indulged in a dalliance with a certain Mr Crawford at the end of Edwins life. However, on the advice of a close friend and confidante put a pause on the relationship. Her friend offered the advice that if Crawfords affections towards her were true, then he would wait for the necessary grieving period for her hand.
ROMANTIC INFO
When Edwin died, so did any of Eliza's hopes that one day she may have a lively romantic life. Truth be told, she holds no expectations in attending Summerview Park, and has simply attended, to keep her family happy. She hopes to marry one day to secure her future, but she holds no expectations that this will be a happy affair, and has resigned herself to the fact it will likely be a marriage of convenience, once more.
