Riley's breath quickened slightly when he realized that the warmth on his back was from his blood seeping out of wounds on his back. It stung, too, sharp at first but then it dulled and turned into a throbbing pain. He inhaled, taking in a deep breath and let his eyes close briefly, and then opened them again, and began to stare intently at the wall opposite from the bed. He pressed his teeth tightly together, determined not to mess things up again by making a sound. Instead he stayed stock still, frozen in his position on the bed, letting the blood trickle down his sides and onto the sheets.
