The heat just kept coming, down his throat, spreading and filling every tissue, every muscle, every nerve. He almost lost track of how much he was taking, then his throat seized as his life swarmed over him. His family, human, then pain, darkness, thirst. Chains and pain, his sire killing the last of his humanity, watching his last ties cut, and mumbling in a corner, crouched from the sun, rules, codes, over and over until they were ingrained. Taking the heart of his sire and disappearing East, cold, so much cold, numb, year after year it got colder, darker, more oppressive. Politics, learning, trying his hand at human pets, lovers, finding nothing for the cold, shifters, heat and power but untouchable, no honor disgusting. Riley, vibrating, power, heat, anger, pain almost feeling, almost touchable, wanting the heat, wanting, him, wanting to mark him, be marked, own, be owned, just wanting.

He moaned, stopped drinking, lips still wrapped around the wound, and before his chest could explode, there was light. Real light, sunshine, a child, a pup, glee, running, freedom, family, the woods, the dark smell of it, the feel of the earth, more then just dirt and trees, something deeper still, the smell of human, of fear, of pain, anger, vibrating, simmering into plan into action, a fight, no, stuck, he was stuck in the form of a human, a man, not able to use teeth, claw, fang, wanting to, the kill and now, finally, triumph, and the slow settle of responsibility, eyes, wolf, human, and more, all watching, all looking for answers.

He yanked his head back, eyes closed, breathing hard. His arm loosened around Riley, a caress now. He kissed the side of his face, licked at the wound to close it as much as he could. "You, fought, fought fair, weak, why? He could have killed you." He knew, not from what he saw but what he himself knew, Dean was not honorable and would have cheated. He wouldn't have cared if he was caught, not once Riley was dead. His face was damp and he was unaware of the angry tears at how he had almost gotten himself killed.
