The vampire kept insisting that it was business and only business, even though everything that they had actually done so far was beyond any sort of business transaction, as far as Wolfram was concerned. If being tangled up in another person's memories and living a few moments of their past was entire impersonal for Tao, then Wolfram finally understood how little humanity mattered to the vampire now.
And despite what he said, he wasn't actually cold and Wolfram had the distinctly strange feeling of being... doted on, especially the way Tao was watching him eat. It sat oddly with Wolfram, but he said nothing, just as he said nothing regarding how he was to treat the vampire. He would listen, but whether or not he would heed the vampire's words was still up for debate. It depended on so many things.
Under Tao's watching eye, Wolfram ate a bit more. Mechanically, yes, but he ate. "He cannot win." His tone was matter of fact. "With Siegfried, this will be a fight to the death. He will not allow me to take his place." He turned the food he was about to eat over, studiously keeping his eyes on the plate, "I will have to win and then kill him. And then I'll have to take his eyes." His gaze moved up to Tao, "That's another reason he cannot be allowed to live. There are too many of us who are stronger than him - we are a new generation. He cannot be allowed to suppress the murder that way."
