{GARETH ARDUENNAS There's a kind of a sort of - cost, there's a couple of things get - lost. There are bridges you cross you didn't know you crossed until you've crossed and that joy, that thrill, doesn't thrill you like you think it will. the good witch of winterwood
FULL NAME: Gareth Arduennas NICKNAMES: Gareth the Good, The Winter Witch DATE OF BIRTH & AGE: May 16th, 3276 : 336 (appears to be in his early 20s) REALM: Winterwood RACE: Human (Sorcerer) MAGICAL ABILITIES: Vast. Gareth is an ancient and powerful sorcerer with an incredible mastery over the mystic arts. While he has practiced light magic almost exclusively for the past two hundred years, he has extensive knowledge and practice in the Dark Arts as well. Gareth is best known for his use of weather magic but he is often sought out for help with curses and healing. MARITAL STATUS: Single SEXUALITY: Homosexual OCCUPATION: Chief Sorcerer of Winterwood CURRENT RESIDENCE: The Eyrie, Winterwood | physical appearance _______________________________ If a three century old sorcerer is suppose to look a certain way, Gareth most certainly does not fit into those expectations. Nearly everything about him says boy as opposed to man. His six-three frame is lean and lanky, his face has a youthful handsomeness to it and his russet hair is almost always in a state of dishevelment. At a quick glance Gareth would appear to be a common tradesman, more at place in a tavern than serving as the Chief Sorcerer of Winterwood in the court of Queen Gudrun. It isn’t until you look deeper into Gareth that the true man appears. There is an intensity in Garth’s green eyes that betray his typically calm disposition, one that speaks of a long history and unimaginable power. He isn’t the most intimidating person but when Gareth enters a room he often commands attention strictly through the manner in which he holds himself. He is stately in poise and moves almost like a hunting cat, deliberate and dexterous. Gareth’s dress only occasionally matches either his station or his poise as he prefers to wear rather common clothing. Cotton tunics and leather jackets are Garth’s typical uniform except for those rare occasionally when he dons his more formal wear for court appearances. The one thing Gareth is never without is his silver scepter, causing many to incorrectly believe it is the source of his power. |
personality & demeanor _______________________________ To the vast majority of the Fae Wood, Gareth is a paragon of kindness, wisdom and generosity. He is seen as an example of what one should do with power, someone that is content to serve and advise the Fae Wood instead of seeking control and power of its inhabitants. The truth of this public persona is nebulous at best. Gareth Arduennas might have succeeded in leaving behind the cruel, power-hungry boy that he once was but he remains to be a vain and manipulative individual. For two hundred years Gareth has dedicated himself to serving the Fae Woods but he does this not for the good of the people but in an attempt to redeem himself. Nearly everything he does is driven by this personal mission to erase his sins and end the threat of Morgana. At this time it is more beneficial for the Fae Woods to be strong so that they may resist the Dark Queen’s plans but if sacrifice is needed to end her, Gareth will do what is necessary. On a more personal level, Gareth is plagued by the demons of his past. He has come to regret everything he did in those early years with Morgana and his failure to stop her years ago. Ever since she returned to the Fae Woods, Gareth has lived in near constant fear of the truth being exposed and the day he will have to face her again, scared that he will not have the power to do what he must to end her. This doesn’t mean that Gareth is all angst and darkness as he has had centuries to learn how to live with these negative aspects of his personality. Overall the sorcerer is rather good-natured. He has come to enjoy the life he has built for himself, finds the mortals that buzz about him fascinating and takes pride in the trust they have placed in him. Gareth spends a fair amount of time socializing with the people of the Fae Woods and is even known to throw parties at his estate. LIKES: creativity, art, music, astronomy, storms, alcohol, being admired, independence, disrupting Morgana’s plans DISLIKES: Morgana, his past, ignorance, stubbornness, arrogance, disrespect, dark magic STRENGTHS: magic, self-reliance, centuries of knowledge, generosity WEAKNESSES: Fear of his past, doubt in his own power, the innocent, connection with Morgana, paranoia TURN-ONS: creativity, strength, independence, surprises, a pure-heart TURN-OFFS: cruelty, deception, arrogance
family & relationships _______________________________ PARENTS: Adrian and Tegan Arduennas SIBLINGS: Tomi Arduennas (brother) OTHER FAMILY: Various “foster” children that he has cared for over the years. He considered Morgana a sister during the century they spent together. Gareth was never very close to his biological family. His parents were merchants or farmers or something, Gareth can’t remember exactly but he knows they lived by rather simple means. He has vague memories of digging in the dirt with his mother, swimming with his father and playing with his brother but he left home when he was young after three-hundred years that first decade fades. It is with Morgana that he has the most memories and strongest connection to. During the time they spent together Gareth became protective of her and held her in great esteem, his feelings towards her have greatly changed since they parted ways although there is still a part of him that wishes to protect her. Throughout his residency in the Fae Woods Gareth has taken in various orphans and apprentices, often maintaining a ties with them and their descendants for years after.
personal history_______________________________ Gareth Arduennas was born during the spring of 3276 far from the Fae Woods. He remembers very little about his early life and what he does remember are just quick glimpses into those first years. He remembers rolling hills of green, beautiful flowers that his mother would decorate their home with, his father smelling like spices, his brother climbing trees and a big black dog. The one thing that is burnt forever into his memory is the accident, the moment that determined the course of the rest of his life. The villagers had always been wary of Gareth due to the strange things that happened around him but eventually the boy’s magic had flared and sent the village into an uproar. They came for him, he can remember the fear in his mother’s eyes and how desperately his father and brother fought the villagers off but eventually they got Gareth. Fear ran through the boy and then a blinding light overtook the Arduennas home and the crowd. When Gareth awoke everyone was dead and the home largely destroyed so he fled. For years Gareth moved across the country, stealing to feed himself and exploring his magic. In time he crossed over into Zhongguo and made his home in an abandoned temple where he also found a stash of magical tomes. The language was foreign to Gareth but he spent years trying to work out the spells and eventually did manage to work out a few spells. After his village had turned on him and killed his family (because he had chosen to believe it was the mob and not his wild magic that killed them) Gareth began to hate humanity and with his new control he became a terror and plague to the surrounding villages. His actions eventually drew the attention of another, the Sorceress Morgana. Gareth was drawn to her immediately as she was the first person that he had met like himself, gifted with magic and an uneasy deal was formed. Gareth would bring her sections of the tomes he had found in exchange for training. In time he gave her full access to his collection and they became allies, Gareth leaving his temple to travel with Morgana. Years went by and Morgana shared her secret to immortality with the young sorcerer. They worked together to master the ritual, dramatically reducing the time and energy it required. Humans had hurt and betrayed Gareth so he had no issues in using them to empower himself and give him life. They were lesser beings, it was an honor to give their lives to Morgana and Gareth. For a century this continued, the two exploring the world and increased their magic. During this time Gareth heard a lot about the Fae Woods but despite his urging for them to return and take magic from the island kingdoms, Morgana refused. Gareth began to grow frustrated with the woman and her one track mind, beginning to feel used. They were immortal and nearly invincible together yet she was focused so completely that it was twisting her mind. Eventually the time came when Gareth began to realize the depths of her insanity. When they came across a conclave of witches and Morgana revealed her intentions to sacrifice them, Gareth opposed her. Up until this point they had sacrificed only humans, never one of their own and definitely not magical children. Morgana agreed to spare the conclave and Gareth left to find a replacement sacrifice. When he returned he found the sorceress had gone back on her word and decimated the conclave. The betrayal sent Gareth into a rage and he attacked Morgana, battling her across the land. Eventually Gareth managed to gain the upperhand and, knowing that he would never be able to defeat Morgana, initiated a ritual to bind their two lifeforces together so that he could kill her at the cost of his own life. At the last moment Gareth hesitated to complete the ritual giving Morgana the chance to overpower him. Gareth managed to escape and fled to the Fae Woods. Gareth knew that Morgana would eventually return to her homeland and planned to gather enough power to end her when she did. However, he was unprepared for the Fae Wood’s effects on him. The people here did not hate magic users, they lived in harmony with each other and with nature and they welcomed him. Without realizing it, Gareth began to change. He began using his powers to help rather than hurt and eventually he became known as Gareth the Good gaining The Eyrie in Winterwood as his home although he never forgot why he had originally come to the Fae Wood. He trained witches, taught and advised members of the royal families and helped forge alliances between different tribes across the Fae Wood. While Gareth no longer performed the ritual to extend his life, he found that the connection he formed with Morgana during their last fight connected their lifeforces and as long as she performed the ritual, he would benefit from it as well. The day eventually came when Morgana did return. Gareth watched as she took the Darkwoods as her own, corrupting and twisting the island and raising her tower. He knew who was behind it and what her ultimate plan was but he remained silent to the people of the Fae Woods, scared of what would happen when they learned of his past and knowing that they would expect him to stop her, a task he wasn’t sure he could do. So instead he traveled to the Darkwoods himself, confront the Dark Queen, proposing a deal. Gareth would remain silent on who she was and allow her to have her island but she was to make no attack on the mainland itself. It was a doomed truce, they both knew it, but Gareth knew it would buy him some time to prepare. The temporary truce has held, despite multiple infractions on both sides, but the Gareth knows the time is coming when their charade will end. Until that time comes though, Gareth has focused on causing as much trouble for Morgana as possible; sending storms to disrupt her pirates’ ship at sea, seeking out her spies in the Fae Wood and, his crowning achievement, aiding her son in his escape to the Fae Woods.
