Personality:
Tilly is cheerful to an extent that gives the impression that she is overly enthusiastic for a Starfleet officer. She is the first Star Trek character to use the 'f-bomb' saying "This is so fucking cool" with a wide smile. She has literally jumped up and down for joy. On first meeting her, she may seem silly and immature. She won't hesitate to strike up a lively conversation with almost anyone she encounters. She can be socially awkward, for example sitting in the captain's chair, or being unaware when her talkative nature is bothering others. She does feel embarrassment when she realizes she's made these blunders and will apologize if she's created offense. Her embarrassment tends to fade quickly and she returns to her upbeat self.
When someone gets to know her, they realize that she is a woman very dedicated to her career. She is driven by a natural curiosity; if she has a question about something, she has a hard time letting it go until she finds a satisfactory answer. Problems can excite her, especially if they are challenging scientifically. She enjoys examining an issue from all angles, with an open mind and is especially pleased when she is able to discover a new way of thinking about that issue or a new solution to a problem. She is open to advice and opinions from others. She also trains herself physically and reaches out for help with the training itself and keeping her motivation.
Tilly is a woman of great compassion and will take great risks to help those everyone around her, including her fellow officers, civilians, strangers and even an alien species that kidnapped her. She once made the mistake of shying away from an unpopular woman, based on the woman's past and reputation as a traitor. She realized this was a mistake and the two developed a deep friendship. She would never make the mistake of judging anyone before meeting them again. She is a a loyal and selfless friend.
While Tilly has a great deal of optimism, she also has moments of self-doubt, stemming from childhood issues with her family, especially her mother, and compounded with her status in Starfleet. She was promoted from Cadet to Ensign while serving on the Discovery, meaning more was expected of her and she is aware that she lacks the experience of her fellow officers, as well as being younger. This can lead to her becoming nervous. When she is nervous, she relies on her habit of talking to those around her. If she is extremely anxious, this becomes rambling as well as making jokes during serious conversations.
