personality:
• Briar struggles with liking her status as a Servus versus feeling like it demeans her and the other scholarship students. She figured out she liked kink pretty early in her sexual awakening—thank you Internet and kinky fanfic—but didn't experiment much in high school because she didn't want stories to be spread around her small town. Too, she struggles with accepting that liking kink and enjoying submitting doesn't make her less of a feminist. In Hale's environment she might be considered lesser, but she's mostly okay with making that trade off, because where else is she going to mix two of her favorite things: kink and learning?
• She knows her chosen major—English—means she's a dime a dozen for students from normal colleges. But to have a degree from Hale? That automatically puts her on a higher level than other college graduates. And if she has to earn that degree by being a Servus to another student or even a professor, well … if that's what it takes, that's what it takes. Briar is driven, determined to do what she has to do to succeed.
• Briar is genuinely curious; she geeks out over learning new things. Everything from historical arrow fletchings to different interpretations of Shakespeare to sexual experimentation. She's definitely a Ravenclaw—you never know when some tidbit of knowledge will come in handy, and so she's always up to try something new, in just about any area.
• Briar is also quite vain. From an early age, the importance of looks and presentation was drummed into her. She's incredibly conceited about her appearance, spending a lot of time and effort to make sure she's always dressed fashionably, with perfect hair and make-up. She liked getting admiring looks from other students in high school, and the teachers, too.
history:
• The only daughter of a single mom in one of those picture perfect suburban communities, Briar has always felt like she had to be extra good and extra perfect to match everyone else around her. Her mother added to the expectations, demanding that her only child excel in school and extra curricular activities. After trying and discarding the usuals—softball, dance, instruments—she tried archery on a whim and fell in love. Archery required practice, concentration, and a good aim, to hear the satisfying thud when an arrow sank into the bullseye. She kept archery up because while her mother didn't necessarily approve of something so unladylike, Jacqueline did know it was an unusual sport that could be a plus on college applications.
• Briar had a few friends through her school years, but never anyone she really connected with. Her mother booked up most of her free time with homework or activities, wanting her daughter to do better than she had (a secretary in DC). At first Briar resented it, wanting to be "normal," but somewhere along the line the determination to succeed and be a good girl became part of her. To that end, she was always super conscious of who she dated and what she did in her last years of high school, all too aware of how easily rumors could spread when you went to school with lower ranking government officials' kids who wanted their own fifteen minutes of high school fame. She wants to be better than them, and one day she will be.
• She's pretty sure that her unknown father is someone in government, possibly a senator, from the way her mother has been so very careful to never give her any details about him. To that end, she's always been interested in the scandals that come out of DC, to see if any disgraced men have the potential to be her father.
• Applying to Hale was a dream from her senior year of high school onwards. Once Briar learned about the prestige and connections Hale students had after graduation, she knew the university would be her ticket to success and the career she dreams of as a professor or journalist. Nevermind that an Ivy League was out of reach financially—she assumed she could earn scholarships. And she did, but Briar never expected that a scholarship at Hale meant she would become a virtual slave to the other students until one picked her to be their personal Servus.
