Callisto for all her power and influence now did not start out that way. She was born poor at a time when the economic boom of the 16th century had begun to stall throughout Europe. It was in Italy that the first signs of hardship became evident not only in people’s everyday struggles but in the way in which society focused not on community but on themselves.

She was only a young girl when she lost her father to the plague sweeping through northern Italy in 1630 meaning her mother was left to care for herself and her young daughter. She struggled, immensely. There wasn’t much work and people were more concerned for themselves and their family than helping a mother and her young daughter survive.

Eventually, her mother also succumbed to sickness when Callisto was just 16 years of age leaving her orphaned and in effect homeless. It was during this time in her life when she caught the attention of a woman called Ginevra who owned and operated a local brothel, recognising that Callisto had all the right assets to make not only herself a fair amount of money, but also Ginevra.

Ginevra took Callisto in under the guise of looking after her but shortly thereafter she put her to work ignoring Callisto’s protests, assuring her that if she tried anything then she’d suffer the consequences. Callisto worked against her will all the while plotting and vowing that one day she would make Ginevra suffer. How? When? She didn’t know, but it would happen.

Of that, she was certain.

The brothel owner was right, however, Callisto did do well and she did have the interest and in many ways ear of several powerful and influential men. One of which was a gentleman by the name of Vicenzo who had taken a particular shine to Callisto, something that did not go unnoticed by her.

She might have only been 26 years of age, but she was smart and highly aware of what did or did not work in her favour, and so she happily courted Vincenzo’s attention and interest. She was so successful that by the time she was 30 years of age he was proposing and asking her to run away with him.

It was love, at least on his side, but for Callisto, it was in many ways a means to an end. There was no way Ginevra would be able to deny Vincenzo, not when he held such power and could destroy her in an instant and would do so with no hesitation.

Callisto was freed from at least one of her prisons and at least her latest one came with a myriad of freedoms she’d never had before. It also came with money, luxuries she’d never been able to afford before, and a very lovely mansion in Milan.

The only downside? Vincenzo.

Of course it was 1653 and if he just so happened to come down with something, a horrible illness (courtesy of the arsenic lacing his food and drink) then it was just unfortunate. Callisto played her role as the loving and doting wife to a tea, continuing to care for her ailing husband right until his last moments, and thereafter she was announced as the sole beneficiary of his will.

She had more money than she knew what to do and she fully intended on putting it to good use. First order of business? Returning to Venice to buy the building from which Ginevra operated and completely gut it in its entirety to be remodeled as something else entirely while forcing Ginevra to watch as her pleas fell on deaf ears. Callisto had sworn to ruin Ginevra and she had, goal achieved. And just like that she blew out of Venice the same way she had until finally settling in Rome.

It was here that she would meet the woman who would ultimately change the course of her life.

Her name? Rosalie.

She was a foreigner, heralding from the shores of Great Britain, in the pursuit of experience or at least that was what she told Callisto. The pair formed a very quick very tight bond, the sort that Callisto very rarely let herself have. In many ways she still held a part of herself back with Rosalie, not allowing the other to know every one of her dirty secrets, but working her charm so that Rosalie was confident and happy to spill everything.

Literally, everything.

There was a reason Rosalie only ever appeared to Callisto at night, she was a vampire and the sun whilst beautiful to everybody else was deadly to Rosalie. Immortality sounded like the next great big adventure and Callisto made sure to keep Rosalie close especially as the longer they were in one another’s lives the more Callisto began to appreciate the world in which Rosalie lived. It was dark, inviting, and it wasn’t long until at the age of 40 Rosalie was approaching her Sire and local leaders to ask for permission to turn Callisto.

Thankfully, the request was accepted, and in the next few weeks, Callisto kissed her humanity goodbye and embraced her fangs.

Callisto took to being a vampire like a duck took to water. Her appetite at first was unsatiable or at least it appeared that way, but under Rosalie’s close and careful tutelage she learned control, how to feed in moderation, but most importantly how to feed in such a way as to not draw unwanted attention to herself.

She spent the next 160 years with Rosalie, but by the time she was 200 she was beginning to get… itchy feet and as a result bid her Sire a fond farewell before going on another big adventure. She arrived in England in 1824 and immediately situated herself as a rich widower in the English high society where she very quickly met and fell into the company of those like her.

It was here she got her first taste of servitude. Not her own, but from those in the homes of her new friends, domestic workers. She liked it, more than she probably should. The slave trade had of course been abolished in 1807 but it wasn’t until 1833 that enslaved labour was stopped and by then Callisto’s interest was more than piqued. Her interest was less to do with the colour of somebody’s skin but more the fact there was money to be made and comfort to be had. If somebody else could do something for her so that she didn’t need to then why wouldn’t she want to pursue that?

In 1834 she left England in the pursuit of American shores where slavery was still alive and well particularly in the south right up to 1865 which proved to be more than enough time for Callisto to establish herself and have a good chokehold on one slice of an expansive network. It was here where she made her most vital and important of connections, not human, but vampire as several had the same if not similar interests to her.

And then the outing of the supernatural in 2000 followed by the 10 year-long war which Callisto was an active part of, delighting in the violence and carnage that ensued. Was she surprised that the supernatural came out on top? That vampires ruled the roust? Not in the slightest. It just made the most sense.

Her primary base of operations remains in the South where she is known to those who need to know as both a slave trader and auctioneer with an iron fist when it comes to disobedience and an even more lethal approach to those that cross her.


Curiosity as well as an eye for opportunity given the quake and subseqent anarchy is certainly the reason Callisto finds her way to New York city. It helps that there are familiar faces, some old friends, others adversaries, or disappointments depending on the person.

Her hope? To corner a much-neglected market, reconnect with the people she’s lost touch with, figure out what happened to some of them (as in, did they lose their mind?) and see just what sort of trouble she can stir up.

Life would be boring without conflict, wouldn’t it?
