Still not dead yet, believe it or not, but not completely safe yet either. It's been too long and I know Wangli must be losing his mind by now, if he hasn't already blown more shit up. My favorite crazy asshole will get good news soon, but not yet. If it's found out that we're at a leeman base, it's going to be more trouble for everyone and I don't need more of a headache.
Jaeseomg is still very fucked up and I think that's putting it lightly. I've been sticking close to him since Alison's people brought us back. Not entirely sure if he understands where we are or not, and I kind of hope he doesn't. I don't want to deal with the shit fit. Hoping I can get him out of here soon.

Dear Dalgi,

Whenever we go out on a mission we have to write a stupid letter like this one. It's supposed to be a will or something in case we die in combat, and considering all the crazy places this job has taken me over the years, I guess it's a risk I should take more seriously. I've definitely come close a few times, but you know this cockroach isn't going to go down that easily, right?

So, if I've disappeared for longer than expected and you're reading this letter, there's a promise I need you to keep.

Until they've shown you a body and you've felt with your own hands that my heart has stopped beating, don't trust anything people tell you, okay? As long as you are in this world, there isn't a hell I wouldn't climb out of to get back to you. It may take longer than expected, and I make you worry a lot until that time. I can't promise that I won't get hurt. I have too many scars to make that promise anymore, but I'll do my best.

You're the strongest person that I know, Dalgi. You're not alone. Don't be afraid and don't cry. Wait for me, okay?

Your favorite crazy idiot,
Haksoo

The helicopter they took out refused to land anywhere near the RedZone until it was fully cleared, not an unusual situation since too many had been attacked by a variety of monsters, terrified survivors looking for an escape, or even by the growing undead hordes. Leaving Haksoo's group to make a jump down to their landing zone.

Just a few miles from the city limits, the team of ten soldiers hit the ground ball running. Moving from a small open field to a nearby wooded area. The elite group of soldiers didn't waste a moment as they spread out, guns raised as they set to ensuring the safety of their landing zone. The team had trained together for years and knew what to do without Haksoo having to give direct orders anymore, their movements fluid as if they had one mind, though they keep an eye out just the same, as they all did. Watching each other's back so nothing could slip through.

The undead lured in by the loud noises of their landing shot down without hesitation and dragged aside as the group moved in unison to create a small barrier that would surround their camp. It took about three hours, gathering what they could from the surrounding area, including falling logs, old signposts, and abandoned down cars as a wall with an outside perimeter of traps in case something unwelcoming still tried to wiggle its way in. They wouldn't be spending much time here, but it was always good to have even a semi-secure base to fall back and for their flying companions to feel better about landing to retrieve them.

Haksoo glanced down to his watch before giving a sharp whistle to gather his men back together, and signal that it was time to move off. They had two days to find Jaeseong and the others and get out before this area would meet the firey fate as the other cities that had been bombed.

48 hours remaining.

They had already plotted out the most direct path and it was nothing short of desperate, but with a short time frame, Haksoo was not going to bank on the fact that maybe his friend Chen would wait for a little longer if they happened to be late.

They started into the city, guard up as there seemed to be very few undead even wandering the area and no animals or even birds scurrying about. The unusual situation made Haksoo more uneasy, as a lack of undead in a RedZone typically meant there was something much worse lurking around and while he was already pissed off for even having to be here in the first place, there were better ways to get out of his anger then picking a fight with a big bad monster.

The team continued to secure the path as they moved through the city, moving cars to block off side streets and alleyways. A double string trap of two colors set every few blocks that would alert them if anything, animal or bigger, was blocking their way back.

They found more undead as they reached the second district. A frightening fresh group that looked better dressed than anyone from this area should have been, only seemed to assure Haksoo that whatever was propelling these big outbreaks was nowhere near ending. This was the most dangerous part of their trek as the group of soldiers headed up onto the open section of highway that would lead them directly to their goal. Using the discarded cars left scattered across the highway for whatever cover they could still be more uncovered than he would have liked.

The highway bridge that connected the Second and Third Districts of Triste was just ahead of them, though the small group of IST they were here to find was hidden from view, wisely having taken cover underneath the bridge. The sounds of gunfire every few minutes coming from two different sides drawing his curiosity even more as Haksoo called his team to a halt along the side of the highway.

"Someone's having fun without us," Haksoo smirked as he came up alongside one of his fellow soldiers, a skilled sniper, and tapped one of the other soldiers on the shoulder. "Can you see anything up there?"

The other soldier was already looking through his scoop even before Haksoo had finished his question. Scanning the area ahead with hawklike precision.

"There's a group of Leemans and even more undead." An exact headcount was given of each group, as well as the direction the undead seemed to be approaching from. "Between us and the bridge. They don't seem to have noticed us as their attention is on the approaching undead."

"Anyone, we know?" There was a shoot on sight order for all Leemans, regardless of who they were, however, there were a few important high-ranking targets that Chen specifically wanted to be taken down more than others.

There were a few moments of silence, followed by a click as the sniper set their gun down on the hood of the car they were presently resting behind and shifted into a stiffened pose, finger poised on the trigger. "Target sighted. Alison Goh. "

"Is that so..."

"I have a clear shot."

"Hold.."

"That's not our soldiers, they're Leemans."

"I said, hold. We don't have the ammo to waste." Headhunting was not the reason that they were called out, and Haksoo was not about to waste ammo or their limited time here. "If our buddies haven't shot them down already, there's a reason for it and I want to know why."

"Where the hell did I put it," Haksoo muttered under his breath as set his gun down at his side and tugged off his pack, and rummaged around in it. Luckily for Alison, this small group was more loyal to him than they were to Chen. Haksoo was known for breaking orders and often going against the crazy brainwashing drills and rules they had learned in training, and they were used to Haksoo's sometimes crazy antics. At the end of the day, he got the job done and got them home alive and that's what counted.

After a minute of struggle and almost losing his hand to the depth of his backpack, he pulled out a can of iced coffee he had hidden away as a treat and some paper. He scribbled out a quick message before using some string to tie it tight around the can. He hoped Alison would appreciate that he was about to waste the single personal item he had stashed away sending a message to her.

He set a hand on the sniper's shoulder and gave a gentle squeeze.

"Watch my back. I'm going to send a love letter."

After getting a nod, Haksoo scooped up his gun and snuck forward several more cars until he came what he hoped was close enough. Standing and hurling the small can forward so that he would land just a few feet behind where the Leemans were setup. As he heard the can hit the hard pavement and crack open, Haksoo set back down and hoped that the spray of coffee wouldn't soak the note too much that it would become unreadable.

You owe me a drink. Let's chat. - Haksoo

[ mood | uncomfortable ]

Haksoo held tight to Dalgis's hand while she slept, the only sound the soft beeps of the machines in the large private hospital room. His powers had saved her life after such a terrible scuffle with the new wolf shifter, but Haksoo was still concerned and wasn't going to risk taking any chances in making sure that his sister was alright. It had been a few days, and all Dalgi did was sleep. That was fine with Haksoo. As far as he was concerned, she deserved a good long nap after everything she had experienced. He could tell by the soft thump of her pulse that she was sleeping soundly, trusting the heartbeat he could feel in her wrist a lot more than any machine. The warmth of her hand and the feeling of her soft skin was also of great comfort to him. He was feeling clingy more than ever lately.

There were so many questions about what happened, about Didi's escape and her current whereabouts, made all the more frustrating by the fact that no one had any answers. If Haksoo knew where Didi was, he would have been the first out the door to hunt her down himself. Other soldiers were already out searching.

The babies were sleeping in a cradle nearby, within arm's reach and where Haksoo could easily keep an eye on them from where he sat next to Dalgis's bed. The cradle positioned away from the door so that anyone coming into the room would have to get past him before they could reach them.

Almost on cue, the door opened. Haksoo stiffened for a moment before settling back stiffly into his seat as he recognized his fellow soldier.

"What do you want, Iris?" Haksoo asked bluntly, only to receive all scowl from the snake lady.

Iris didn't look happy, but she rarely ever did, except for when things were about to get very scary. Today, thankfully, wasn't one of those days. She held up a bright pink post-it note, not giving Haksoo time to read it before crumpling it up into a ball and tossing it at the Haksoos head.

"What the hell is this? Who the fuck quits with a post-it note? How much of a dumbass can you be?"

The furious snake was not trying to be quiet at all and that only irritated Haksoo more as he let go of Dalgi's hand, gently setting it down on the mattress before standing to face Iris.

"This is not the time."

"Oh, no. It's exactly the time. You're glad that I found this before Chen did."

"Damnit, iris. *

Haksoo's irritation was spoken with through hushed breath as he got up and stormed past iris, he didn't want to risk waking Dalgi from her deep sleep or the boys, and this conversation seemed headed in the direction of loud. He held the door open until she followed after him, careful not to touch his fellow soldier. He waited until they were both out in the hall before slowly and quietly closing the door behind them.

"You need to butt out of other people's business."

"You need to stop being an idiot."

Iris seemed to get the point that Haksoo wanted privacy for this conversation, taking hold of Haksoo's arm and pulling him a little further down the hall where they could speak normally. She seemed to understand that Haksoo wasn't going to wander too far. When Haksoo pulled back and brushed her off, Iris didn't try to grab him again.

"Stop calling me an idiot. I'm trying to protect my family. They need me."

"I'll stop calling you an idiot when you stop acting like one."

Iris huffed, crossing her arms over her chest. It wasn't like her to poke her head into his business or try to bail him out of trouble. She was the kind of person that would stand back and laugh at him, fiercely competitive and long suspected jealous of Haksoo and Chen's friendship. Having him quit should have been a reason to celebrate, so it only confused him more about why she was even here.

"We need you! Chen is the only reason you have this family right now, the only reason that an idiot like you is even still alive and walking around, and you were going to spit in his face and walk away with nothing more than a fucking post-it."

"Given the reaction the last time someone quit, it seemed safer."

Haksoo lifted a hand and rubbed his head, feeling a burning headache come on. Maybe not the smartest move to only leave a short note, but Haksoo had crunched for time and had resigned himself to accepting whatever angry reaction his friend might have over his resignation.

"I should have left it and let him take your head off, but there are more important matters to take care of first."

Iris pulled out a thick brown folder from the bag she had hanging at her side and slapped it against Haksoos' chest.

"Jaeseong and his group are pinned down in a red zone and need to be extracted. You're to head out immediately."

Now he understood why she was here. Haksoo tossed the folder aside without even looking at it. There was a time where he would have jumped at the chance to rush into such dangerous places just for the thrill. The dangers made him feel alive. Haksoo was one of the best at getting in and out of bad situations, but those days had passed. Haksoo had something else to live for now. Three people needed him alive and well.

"I don't care. send someone else."

"There is no one else, and you know it."

Iris bent down and picked up the folder, setting the documents back inside before holding it out to him. Her fingers held tight to the edge of the brown paper. He could tell by the way it wrinkled in her grip that she was holding back.

"Look, stupid. If I could do it, I wouldn't be here talking to your stubborn ass, but think about it this way. Chen helped you take care of your kids when you were in trouble. Now it's the time to return the favor. I know you want to leave. I will even help you write a proper exit letter when you come back. You owe him. Now, go and do the job you were hired to do."

Her words hit a nerve that hurt much deeper than he thought it ever could. Haksoo glared daggers at Iris as he took the folder from her.
Iris spoke up before he could as if reading his lingering hesitation. Her voice was suddenly softer.

"Go. I'll keep them safe until you get back."

She cracked her knuckled with a sly smile as if to accentuate the point. She wasn't the biggest or the strongest in the IST, but that hardly mattered with the poison that Iris could wield to paralyze her enemies. There were very few that could face off against her and come out on top.

Haksoo took a deep breath before nodding and opened up the folder in his hands, starting to flip through the pages. The situation was not good, but that wasn't unusual with so many outbreaks across the cities, this was going to be a very long day indeed.

They blew up my baby.

I understand that she was old and rusty and worked about 80% of the time, but this wasn't the death that I imagined. She deserved better!

What the actual fuck?

The princess is back in her castle and it's time to go hide back at my own base for a while where hypothetically speaking, Alison shouldn't be able to reach me and I can do that promised background check on her beloved werepanda. I need to talk to Dalgi and Chen, maybe not in that order...maybe a good drink and shower before any of it though.
