Anyone know of any legitimate programs that send native English-speaking people overseas to teach English abroad?

I believe there's one in South Korea, which doesn't require you to have knowledge of Korean. You just need to have completed a degree.

I suggest picking a country or general area you want to go to first. Then look up teaching programs for that area because generally speaking different programs different countries different requirements.

For example, JET doesnt want people who speak or have lived in Japan for too long, but want people with a college degree (doesnt really matter what). Other countries, however may want more fluency in the language, or a specific teaching degree.

I suggest Europe over Asia. Most people, even the die hard Japan-o-philes, tend to be miserable there, especially since they tend to send you to rual areas versus big cities. While Americans who go to Europe from my experience, experience less culture shock and the people there are more inclusive.

JET and Nova (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nova) are the biggest con masters in this scheme. It's a lot of varying experiences but do note that Japan has a reputation of "Mcdonaldfying English". Just a few years ago, there was a whole lot of scandal kicked up about one of these countries not paying their teachers for 3 months etc.

And if you want to do it legit way, you might want to consider first getting a Teaching English as Second Language (TESOL) cert first. Most legit companies will make you take it or want you to have that before sending you out.

Either or, the less than legit will try to con your money by asking you to pay for your lessons before you even get to travel.

I believe that was because Nova went bankrupt and is no longer in business or something to that effect. I ahd a friend that started out in Nova and is now in JET. JET seems way more reputable. But then again: Japan. Not a place I would want to teach English in.
