How Lily Found Out About Luke and Reid
Title: How Lily Found Out About Luke and Reid

“That’s strange,” Lily said, seeing one of Luke’s shirts carelessly tossed aside on the sofa. She picked it up and shook out the wrinkles.

Lily opened Luke’s bedroom door and stopped short. There, fast asleep in her son’s bed was Dr. Reid Oliver, his chest pressed tightly against Luke’s back, his arm wrapped around Luke’s middle and their fingers loosely tangled together. The sheet - thank god for the sheet, she thought - was covering the lower half of what she suspected was their naked bodies.

Dr. Oliver - Reid - Lily thought sourly, had his nose buried in the back of Luke’s hair, sharing Luke’s pillow.

Lily was rooted to the spot, her brain trying to make sense of the sight in front of her. ‘I should go,’ she thought but couldn’t seem to make her feet move.

Dr. Oliver – Reid – must be at least ten years older than Luke. Probably more, she quickly calculated in her head. He looked good though, she had to admit, raising an eyebrow as she took in his lean torso and well-defined arms. He was also no doubt much more experienced than her son.

Noah had been Luke’s first, and until now his only. They’d discovered what sex and relationships were about together; just a couple of innocent teenagers when they’d met. Lily suspected Reid Oliver was anything but innocent. She frowned, clutching Luke’s shirt tightly in her fist.

It wasn’t just the age difference that concerned her, Luke himself had told her Reid was cold and rude, hardly the qualities a mother wants for her child’s partner. The man was a world-renowned neurosurgeon, what could he possibly want with Luke, he was only just out of his teens?

Well honestly, she knew what he wanted, she just didn’t like it.

Just then Luke mumbled something quietly and shifted in his sleep. Still asleep, Reid moved even closer to her son and tightened his grip on Luke’s fingers. Luke’s lips twitched into a smile before he settled back down, breathing steadily and looking completely at ease in Reid’s arms.

Her son had a big heart and a lot of love to give. Lily had thought Noah would be the only man her son would ever give that love to, but she also knew better than anyone that things don’t always work out the way you think they will. The way you hope they will. Just look at this whole mess she was in with Holden. She sighed.

Lily missed Noah, the boy had been like a son to her and she had been accustomed to seeing him at least once or twice a week, in Old Town or at family dinners or helping out at the farm. He’d been part of the family for almost three years and now he was gone. He’d left for Los Angeles a week earlier to pursue his film career, though Lily suspected his decision to leave had less to do with his career and more to do with not wanting to run into Luke or Reid - mostly Reid - after all the drama they’d been through lately. And run into them he would, Oakdale was a small town. Too small, sometimes.

With a final glance at the two figures wrapped up tightly together on the bed, Lily turned and left the room, closing the door quietly behind her.

Her son was smart, and loyal to the people he loved. Lily knew there must be more to Dr. Reid Oliver than she first thought or Luke wouldn’t be with him.

She vowed to give him a chance.
