Draco Malfoy.

Some of the office girls swore he wore Black Magic, that limited edition cologne only sold to royalty and billionaires. It was said to intoxicate any woman. Others said he wore L'Homme, this rugged aftershave that was favoured by rough-and-tumble sort of men. One girl had been fired two years ago for planting her face into his neck as Draco had opened the door for her. While she was escorted out of the building, she confirmed to the other girls with a tearful shout that it was definitely L'Homme. But a few of the sceptics spent weeks smelling different fragrances at the local department store, and concluded with the utmost confidence that he wore Serpente—the one that came in a small bottle made out of green, thick glass--so dark it was almost black.

And then… And then, some of the girls thought it was just all him.

Striding through the glittering crowds of the Ministry of Magic's annual cross functional mixer, Draco Malfoy was breaking hearts with every footstep. With cold, calculating eyes, he immediately checked off and noted the girls that were worth his time-- and faded the rest into blurry black and white.

"Hi, I wanted to introduce myself," he'd say in that low, dark voice. A boyish smile would grace his lips unexpectedly-- but his eyes remained intense and focused. His victims would be caught off guard by both his intensity, but also by the unexpected gesture.

Draco Malfoy is introducing himself to ME?

It was foolproof. All the witches would get shaky hands, their skin would flush pink, and they'd sputter, "Draco, of course I know who you are." They'd giggle and touch his arm.

Feeling good about himself, Draco picked up a drink before choosing his next target. Ah. Parvati Patil. He decided to approach the wizard standing just a mere foot away from her and make small talk with him first.

In a hot red little number, Parvati Patil was feeling a little out of sorts at this event. It was glamorous, filled with handsome men and she was definitely one of the most beautiful women here - why, it was her perfect trio in characteristics she looked for within a function. Yet, she just wasn't completely into the vibe.

Perhaps it was because of her agonizingly annoying relationship with Jacob Brandon, that although ended a few months back, continued to plague her and make her wonder if they were doing the right thing. Or perhaps it was because her eye had caught on Draco Malfoy. The man was cut from the mold that Parvati herself could have made and stamped as her "Dream Man". Mind you, his skin was a few shades lighter than how Parvati had initially imagined her dream man, but what did it matter?

Oh god. He was talking to someone near her. And she was by herself looking like a loner. Parvati frantically scanned the crowd to find one of her friends. Where were those girls when you needed them?

There was another trick that Draco had developed along the way to his current state. Pretty girls expected to be noticed. They expected to distract you from whatever you were doing. And so, he made a point of never paying attention to a pretty girl when he was doing something else. He would watch them out of his peripheral vision, but would never give them the satisfaction of a smile while he was talking with someone else.

"Hi Draco," a trio of glamazon witches giggled at him as he spoke with the wizard near Parvati. He merely looked at them briefly and nodded a degree. They looked a little confused as they walked away.

Smirking inside, he finished up his conversation while keeping tabs on Miss Patil. A few more minutes, and he stood alone for a beat before turning to her.

"I wanted to introduce myself. I'm Draco Malfoy."

As she was trying her hardest to spy Lavender or Alicia in the crowd, Parvati suddenly realised with horror that Draco had turned toward her and was speaking ....speaking words to her! Cripes.

Although Parvati was everything that made up a perfect package, she had been blessed with the horrible gifts of selflessness, modestly and insecurity, and so was probably the polar opposite to what Draco expected her to be.

Completely lost as to what to say, it was to her credit that her expression did not become startled. Instead, with great warmth in her voice and a sparkling smile, she tilted her head in greeting and spoke:

"Oh! You're Draco! So nice to meet you! I'm Parvati Patil."

Well done, Parvati She congratulated herself, You've known the man for years when you were younger and you act as if you've never met? Well done. Well freakin' done.

Suffice it to say, Draco was a little surprised.

In fact, if the room had been quiet instead of buzzing with laughter, Parvati would have heard the sound of Draco's throat contracting in shock. But he was quick on his feet, and kept his lips together in a polite smile. He had to use every shred of his will power not to demand, "What do you mean, you don't know who I am?!"

"I read your questions you had for the Q&A session later," Draco began with ease. The session was really meant for a bit of bantering between the guests, and for miscellaneous announcements. "They're quite specific. It feels like you're performing our annual evaluation," he joked-- but he didn't allow his body language to become too intimate. He did not lean into her, or give her a little grin.

He liked to be a little hot and cold with women-- but especially this one, who apparently did not know who he was.

There's no way she doesn't know! ...Is there?

"Oh!" Parvati was pleasantly surprised at his statement and she smiled at him quite happily. Although smitten with his handsome looks and charm, she was not calculating like most of the women he approached, and so her expression remained as open and cheery as it would with anyone, especially since she was completely taken off guard by his approaching her.

"Well, I suppose they might be a little to the point, but it's really very important. The Dragon pox pandemic may become exceedingly serious within a few months if the appropriae precautions are not taken place. I mean, it's much more severe in britain than any where else, so there really is no time for flitting about over finances and policies because our country will have to be a trail blazer in how to handle the situation." Her impassioned speech was said earnestly and Parvati's dark brown eyes met Draco's gray ones for a long moment when she was finished.

"Sorry," She laughed embarressedly, "I have a habit of talking too much."

Then, she clinked her finger against her champagne flute and gazed off into the crowd for a moment in a gesture that for her was one of nervousness but could be interpreted as just oblivious disinterest.

Draco didn't laugh along as she apologized. Gazing at her intently for a moment, he then backed off and gave another reserved little smile.

"That's great," he replied, with controlled geniality. "No, don't worry about talking too much." The response was instant in timing, but his controlled gestures purposefully did not lend a sense of assurance to the pretty young woman.

He watched as she glanced away, and hid his confusion. Following her gaze, he found nothing provoking enough that would have distracted her. He had to leave and recompose himself.

"I'm going to get another drink." Normally, a man would stand and wait for a woman's response. But Draco made a point of already taking a few steps away. "Need anything?"

Inside, Parvati was saddened. It was very obvious that he was not particularly interested. But why did he even approach her? How strange. My, his face was just so lovely...

No. He was not interested. Resolutely, Parvati did as she always did when she felt as if someone was not interested in her, she made definite note not to be flirtasious or pathetic. She would never want them to feel uncomfortable, thinking her to be waiting to pounce on them and drag them up the aisle. Like Jacob did, she thought darkly, like Jacob always did.

As he offered to get her a drink she perked up slightly, pushing a shock of dark black hair out of her eyes, "Oh, a champagne would be lovely if you don't mind."

As Draco strode off, and Parvati tried not to stare at him, she looked around. Her attention caught by one the news monitors a little while away, she abandoned her spot and wandered over to it.

There were four brands of champagne circulating the event. Two were not chilled, and the third tasted like urine. Draco made a point of getting the fourth kind for Parvati-- the one that was ice cold, but sweet and crisp. Getting the server to drop in a bit of white peach puree, and forcing him to use one of the good crystal flutes, he got a tumbler of something amber colored for himself before walking back to the young woman.

"Here you go," he said efficiently. Despite securing the Gryffindor princess a special drink, he delivered it with an indifferent casualness. It was akin to a man proposing to a woman with the most beautiful and outrageous diamond in the world by dumping it on her lap.

Receiving the drink with graciousness, Parvati made quick note of how much nicer the crystal flute was than the ones the waiters were carrying about, but chose not to comment lest she seem young or airheaded.

Sipping her drink, a content smile crossed her face, "Ooh, this is lovely!" Then, thinking that perhaps she was much too girly, she looked back at the monitor which was doing a quick report on yet another take over by Galbraithe, a highly successfully potions company that everyone knew was owned by Draco Malfoy.

Not wanting to seem like a stalker of any sort, she looked at him sideways, "This company seems to be doing quite well, no?"

"Yes," Draco relaxed for a moment. "We're 3% below what we need, just the last little bit to pull through." Good Merlin, it was a genuine smile. It was clear that the man loved his work. "If we manage, we'll hold a big party in January."

He then paused.

Wait, this company? Not his company? He eyed her questionably. Normally, he'd peg her as absolutely absurd. But she seemed so sincere and composed in her questions that perhaps she somehow didn't know that he owned Galbraithe.

"Do you regularly read the Daily Prophet?" he asked casually, trying not to look astounded.

Parvati smiled brighter as he seemed to lighten as well, "Oh, that's a lovely idea! I absolutely love companies that celebrate a good year with parties instead of just stern handshakes and gift baskets."

"Why, yes, I do." She seemed puzzled at his answer, "Why?" Parvati's voice grew sharp, sensing a potential insult. Before he could begin to answer, she continued on, her temper having being slightly lit, "I must say that question seems a tad rude, wouldn't you think?"

It was a few moments later when a hush fell over the crowd as Dr. Divintra Bluegoggle entered the hall and subsequently grabbed the Minister by the arm, dissappearing off into a conference room. "Ooh!" Parvati chirped. "Draco," His name rolled easily off her tongue, "That's the world famous virologist, Dr. Bluegoggle."

Dr. Bluegoggle was the son of a wizarding prince from Albania, massively wealthy and disproprionately intelligent. Due to the vast panic over the new strains of Dragon Pox, he was in high demand everywhere, especially since rumor had it that he was close to finding a cure.

Roots in magical medicine, Parvati sighed deeply, "Oh, it would be lovely to have a chat with him! I had no idea that he would be here! Oh, if only. He's an entity all in it's own."

Surely it may be a small chink in his ego that Parvati knew so much about Albanian Pureblood Royalty and made no notice of Draco as the closest to British Pureblood Royalty, but of course it wasn't true, Parvati knew all about Draco, but had no need to impress Dr. Bluegoggle like she had to impress the young blonde.
