Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry

The day had been a longer-than-normal one. Elena swore just based on the number of patients she’d seen that the full moon was approaching. And so when one of her fellow residents had invited her out for a round of drinks, she’d gratefully accepted. The gathering didn’t last long; everyone else had somewhere to run off to. A dog to walk, a boyfriend to return home to, and on and on until Elena sat by herself at the bar, nursing a beer. She didn’t really want to go back to her empty apartment just yet. Jeremy was in art school in Rhode Island, her Aunt Jenna and Uncle John in Virginia still, and medical school had taken priority over maintaining any sort of long-term relationship. So she sat, reveling in the bustle of the bar, enjoying the music and studiously avoiding catching anyone’s gaze. She really did not want to have to deal with some guy looking for a hook-up just then..

Billy also had a long day. Running Anvil wasn't easy especially when you had to deal with egos and such. Despite all that, there were several promising recruits and he was pleased.

After calling it a day, Billy decided to get a drink at his favourite bar. Initially, he went with a colleague but he was quickly left to his own devices when his colleague had to leave. He should have called it at night himself, however, a pretty woman across the bar had caught his eye. Instead he sat and watched until she too, was left on her own.

Billy eventually got up and took his empty bottle to the bar. He slid into a seat as he motioned for a refill. "May I buy you another?" He asked Elena, looking at her almost empty beer. She might refuse but at least it was one way to get her to talk to him.

Elena started to say something but a glance up at Billy stopped her in her tracks. Well he certainly wasn’t the normal kind of guy who tried to chat her up. This guy…he was put together. Head ducked with a shake of her head.

“One is usually my limit.” But she smiled as she said it, eyes meeting his. No one liked a boozy doctor but then she also hadn’t completely refused his offer. “At least when I have to work the next day”

Billy gave a small smirk, Elena's once over him did not go unnoticed by him.

He waited for the bartender to set his refill in front of him before. "That is remarkably responsible of you. Most don't know their limit or decide to take a walk on the wild side. Perhaps I could buy you another drink. A soda?" He took a sip from his drink.

"What is it that you do for work?"

“I have to err on the side of caution,” she answered, draining the last bit of her beer. “I’m a doctor. If I don’t want to be sued for malpractice, I need to be responsible.” There were too many stories about doctors or surgeons who’d had a few too many and then messed someone up for life. She didn’t want to be one of those cautionary tales.

And she still hadn’t accepted his offer. But, sparing a glance to her watch, and then back at the man beside her, Elena made a split second decision to be spontaneous. At least this once. “One soda,” she answered. “And then I really should get home. Early day tomorrow.”

"That's a very wise decision. Nobody wants a messy law suit." He took another drink. "What kind of doctor are you?" She looked entirely too young to be a doctor but again, he was blessed with good genes so he knew that looks could very much be deceiving.

When she accepted his offer for a drink he motioned for the bartender to fill her order. "Tell me, what is being a doctor here in Mystic Falls like? Are you busy? See a lot of weird injuries?"

“I’m in residency,” Elena answered. She could guess what he was thinking. A lot of patients were none too shy about commenting on her appearance. Youthful or otherwise. Apparently she didn’t quite look 26.

“Specializing in pediatrics.” It was said with a smiling shrug. Most women tended to go into certain specialties. Pediatrics and obstetrics being chief among them. “But I’m doing residency in the emergency room. So..yeah. There are a lot of weird things. Especially around full moons.” Or holidays.

“Elena, by the way. And what about you? What do you do Mr….?” She was fishing for a name to go along with the drink.

Billy raised an eyebrow at her response. "Residency? That's very impressive." The woman beside him barely looked old enough for the job.

"I can only imagine the injuries you have seen. If you are in the emergency room, I'm sure you have even seen a few of my men pass through your doors. I admire your work. Most men that get patched up, you barely notice the scar."

He gave her his best grin when she gave him her name. "Russo. But please call me Billy. I have my own businesses. Anvil. We are military proving protection services where needed."

"I'm not the only doctor in the emergency room," Elena answered lightly. "I'm sure a bunch of us were responsible for patching them up. But I am glad to have a satisfied patient.

The name rang a bell. Not his, the company name. She nodded. "Your men are the ones who come in with bullet or knife wounds but don't tend to leave handcuffed in a squad car." The same couldn't be said of most.

"I'd say owning your own business is pretty impressive, too. Especially one devoted to providing protection."

"I haven't had the pleasure of needing medical attention yet but my men have all had nothing but good things to say. I will be sure to ask for you."

"I got back from active service and decided that the civilian life wasn't for me. I didn't know what else I could do until it dawned on me that I can use my skills for civilian life. It's not an easy job but I do enjoy it."

“Not that I think you would be anything but a good patient but I hope it is a long time before I see you in the emergency room, Mr. Russo.” Her smile widened a hair more. It would be a shame for such a charming man to be injured. Though she supposed it was almost inevitable given his line of work.

“I’m glad you found your calling. I know what you mean…about enjoying a challenging job.” It was how she felt about being a doctor. It wasn’t easy by any stretch of the imagination but she did enjoy it. Enjoyed helping people.

Though that was enough ‘shop talk’ as it were. Elena couldn’t help but tease him. “So, do you always offer to buy your doctor a drink?”
