Cleaning up mother's mess
Being the daughter of a magic addictted ex-stripper wasn't exactly a great childhood experience. A string of men, and bad decisions, the only good that came from it was Hannah had enough money to buy piano lessons for Kady. From a young age, it seemed that Kady was destined to always be trailing behind Hannah, trying to fix the messes she made. That continued to ring true when Hannah basically sold her into servitude to Marina after a heist gone wrong killed two people. Marina wanted magic, and with Kady finally heading to Brakebills, she was the perfect person to steal it for her. She didn't expect Penny, or Alice, or Quentin. She didn't expect to make friends, or fall in love. But it happened. When her freedom from Marina came, after the death of her mother, she left Brakebills behind to avoid being expelled and wiped.
Betrayed by a God
Thrust back into the life of a hedgewitch after leaving Brakebills, she finds herself a part of a group, which includes Quentin's old friend Julia (much to Kady's dismay). While the rest of their small group of hedges work on a secret project, Kady and Julia master more magic, track down a Lamia. It turned out to be a trick from a trickster god - Reynard the Fox - and ended with several hedges killed, Juila raped, and Kady barely escaping with her life. She fell into a deep depression, getting addicted to drugs.
After helping Julia with a dead Marina problem, and learning about Julia's most likely evil pregnancy, the two formed a plan to get Julia a magical abortion, but due to a massive lack of funds, they come up with a different plan to rob a bank to get the money they need. Kady and Julia ended up getting attacked by a demon, and they end up hiding out at Brakebills yet again.
With a little help from her friends, however, the heist was successful, and they managed to get the money they needed for the abortion, and a little extra to help out Margot and Eliot. There was only one problem, though. The procedure for Julia's abortion left her separated from her shade.
demon babies, i love you's, and a trip to Fillory
Julia's demon baby wasn't the first. In a search to find Reynard's first son, Kady got to see first hand how hard it was to work side by side with her ex, Penny. Despite some killer makeup sex, she agreed to keep things professional between them. That didn't seem to stop Penny from agreeing to a million years working for the Library in exchange for information they needed to find Reynard's son. He also told her that he loved her, which scared her as much as it did the first time he said it, during the trials.
After locking up Quentin (who has Niffin Alice living inside of him), Penny took Kady to Fillory for the first time to get Julia out of the dungeons where Margot had locked her up. Reynard's son ends up being a Senator, whom they end up kidnaping to keep Julia from killing him. Ultimately, however, their plan fails and Reynard ends up taking his son, and disappearing. Worrying about Julia, Kady helped lock her back up in a cell at Brakebills, because she was most definitely not okay.
Overdue Books, killing a god, and losing everything
Kady continued her search for Reynard, helping Penny with his new Library assignment of tracking down overdue Library Books. Through that task, she found out that the Library had information on how to kill a god, locked in a room called the Poison Room. Penny agreed to look into how to get into the Poison Room.
After killing Gaines to get his power, Kady and Julia craft a single, god killing bullet. Which would have been great news, had Penny not shown up at the Physical Kids cottage dying, after visiting the poison room to get the book they needed to craft the bullet. Their plan was interrupted by another god, however, who took Reynard to the underworld. As pissed as Katy was that she didn't get to see Reynard die, she had another impending death to try and prevent instead.
After summoning a demon that was supposed to help cure Penny, he died anyway. Something in her broke, and she very nearly OD'd. Kady didn't want to give up. She couldn't give up. Penny was the one person she truly loved in the world, and she wasn't ready to let him go. She tried to find a way to bring him back. Eventually, though, Alice managed to convince her that they needed to bring in a creature from the library to eat Penny's body, to keep him from possibly becoming an angry spirit.
But they didn't get the chance, because Penny's body burned. They had no idea that he'd been astral the entire time, instead of letting them go through with their plan, he managed to possess the candle that Kady had been about to use to burn his body. He made the choice for them.
After that, Kady ended up in a psychiatric hospital. She was broken, and she needed to find a way to put herself back together. Alice didn't help matters by bringing her the key that let her see Penny. In fact, that only made her feel worse. He was stuk on the astral plane, and there was nothing she could do about it. A small part of her didn't want to do anything about it, because she was just too fucking tired.
23 & No
A hospital jailbreak. A quest for keys to return magic. Coming face to face with a Penny from an alternate timeline who didn't know who she was. It was a lot to handle. Even moreso when the magic of the keys decided to recognize the new Penny instead of hers.
