They're from the His Dark Materials series, in which in a world that's like our own but not our own daemons are the physical form of the soul outside the body. They'd only disappear if you'd died, pretty much.
I'm just looking at it like, temporarily, our universe of origin changed to the one daemons are from and now it's changed back.
